Well: I've written for it! We had a very nice one at college (RAM), as well as a "paper clip" contrabass, and so I wrote an arrangement of Weber's Der Freischütz overture for clarinet choir (E♭, 3 x B♭, Alto in E♭, Bass & Contrabass). It was performed once at college. Maybe I'll get it pubished one day! 😁
I love that the woodwind tutti was 'the lick'
Severly underrated channel and video. Please make more and never stop.
This video would be infinitely better if we could hear the excerpts referred to
For some it wasn't possible to confirm if recordings used a genuine alto or a basset horn, so it wouldn't have been as helpful to guess.
If we named these instruments sensibly, the Eb would be the Soprano, the Bb would be the Alto, The Eb Alto woud be the Tenor and the Bass Clarinet is named correctly.
Always thought it odd that the Bb - the 'soprano' - descends all the way to D3, which is not in what most people would call the normal range of a soprano singer.
To be honest I thought soprano meant clarinet in Eb and the standard Bb/A was alto 😂😂😂 it really doesn’t make sense to me if the soprano meant the standard Bb/A
I'd like an alto clarinet or basset horn, but can't afford one.
Moje czasy, moja muza
It’s important to note that many of the early 20th century bass saxophones that are still in use (mostly Conns and Bueschers) are only keyed to high Eb. It would therefore be the most conservative option to limit your scoring to that range unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise.
The chord at the end of this piece is truly one of the most bone-stabbing chords in the history of music. This sequence is also pretty amazing too. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yes that final chord is certainly something! I waver between preferring the original version and the revised (more well known) version. I've listened to the original so much that I'm more used to it.
I played the alto clarinet in high school and loved it. I've been disappointed by not finding it in wind ensembles or in orchestras. I enjoy these articles very much.
Is that clarinet an alto

Stop trying to gaslight me to like that forbidden instrument. As a Clarinet player, we are not to speak of it.
The alto clarinet shouldn't ever be forbidden. Sounds lovely to my ears.
MORE OF THESE I BEG YOU
Have to comment my little experience here: 1. Always been curious about adding saxophones to my orchestral compositions, despite usually not a personal fan of their sound. 2. Upgrading my setup and sound libraries, I'm looking for saxophones, and find this video - what feels like only ONE of TWO good videos on all of TH-cam on the topic! 3. I "prototype" a new composition with a large woodwind section and some good but free saxophone sounds. 4. I blow myself away with the chord progression, subtle melody, and variety of colors in what might be one of my favorite, most beautiful and emotional and expressive snippet of music I've ever written, especially since I'm rerecording and performing every individual instrument myself on the controller keyboard. 5. I'm definitely going to get a more flexible saxophone sound library soon, I came back to rewatch this video to reinforce my thoughts, so I decided to comment. :) Thanks for the video and all the examples!
Sounds great! You could read through the score to Vaughan Williams' 9th Symphony. It's for orchestra and has 3 saxes in it (no bass though). Also check out the Holbrooke works I mentioned in the video; lots of good examples.
@@danthefugueguy Thanks for the extra recommendation! Will add to my notes!
I traded a Eb for an alto clarinet from my old high school band. I play it as well as the bass and contra alto in the band I’m in now. Alfred reed will often times then not have an alto and contra alto part in the world part section. Wats sad is I found a paper in te case from 1986 which is when it was probably last played
As someone who will soon purchase a bass saxophone, i wholeheartedly agree
I have always liked the sound of the alto. A few years ago, I needed to write an arrangement for the middle school band I was directing. There was a section that I needed to write as a clarinet choir. The alto filled out the middle notes beautifully and this section sounded great. Other band director friends of mine who played this piece later on used a tenor sax here (because of the range) but the tonal balance was not the same.
It's a very useful instrument.
And remember: Stockhausen wrote for BASSET HORN, not ALTO CLARINET!
I will definetly use the Bass Saxophone in my Band works!
I love how many real examples of the synthwave lick and outrun rise you added.
14:46 IS THAT THE LICK??
Amazingly well done documentary. Congrats!
John Williams used the last Jedi score alto sax and 2 bass saxes
I suggested an alto clarinet for my high school band and everyone pointed and laughed because nobody thought it was an actual instrument until at our marching band championship a school marched bass and alto clarinet together on the field unironically enough they got first we got third
I was born in the 70s, therefore, this is still synthpop to me. Nevertheless, such a great video! Very well made! May I hit the “like” button more than once?

As a musician and avid transformer fan and collector this gives me the happies 🌝

Thanks - very pleased with how it turned out.
Dan, I'm a music professor, and I would love to get a copy of your analysis for my film scoring class. Is that a possibility?
There isn't any paperwork available, but feel free to play the vid in class by all means!
Very inspiring and informative documentary. Synthwave is the best corner of internet. Love it! 🌆😇
Wow...
Great Vid.
7:22 that is the game of thrones theme
That clip is marked 2009. Game of Thrones first aired in 2011. So he wrote the piece before GOT existed...
Obsessed with all these artists and so hyped they’re in this plus ones I’m new to and I’m adding them now Thank you!
New sub !!
Man, this brilliant! Very well made and explained! I'm sure I'll come back to this video and rewatch it, because it was such a pleasant watch. I totally adore synthwave and love making it myself. I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so this, although I'm from '78, is like a safe haven to me! Thanks! ps I'm gonna send this link to Timecop 1983 and Nina. ☺
Thank you so much; glad you enjoyed the vid. Nina's Beyond Memory & Timecop1983's One Night are two of my favourite synthwave tracks, mainly due to the harmonies.
It's surprising how many people think this is how the 80's really looked. In reality, the typical 80's home looked much as it did in the 70's (unless you had money and could afford the hideous, floral, Laura Ashley style that came into vogue).
Yep. The look of E.T. was what the 80s looked like for most people. Just regular homes with lots of brown wood paneling.
There was no mention of the direct rip-off of Henley's Boys of Summer at 15:25
Possibly because that's not relevant to the discussion?
@@LindaBinjuice except a big part of the video pertained to influences in the genre, which makes it very relevant. Just make a mention and give a nod then I'm okay with it is all I'm saying.
@@jgpick63 would be a considerably longer vid then if every single potential influence of every single song was discussed! Doesn't affect the pace or message of the video that Boys of Summer wasn't mentioned.
Amazing video!!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Dan, just wondering, what mouthpiece did the bass sax player in your 1st Symphony Movement 1 use for that solo? I’m looking at getting a bass sax and I loved that tone in the soli so if possible can you give me the name of that mouthpiece please?
I honestly have no idea sadly. I'm not a sax player, so wouldn't know how to tell!
This video should have 6 digit views. Liked and subbed 👍
Thanks - appreciate the sub!
Fantastic video Dan ❤️ your analysis added even more enjoyment to a score I've loved since I can remember. I play violin in an amateur orchestra and my buddy sent me this - we said how your analysis is way more fun than our theory classes 😂 The Thing is on Film4 tonight!! I love the dissonance on the canon. Excellent work on an absolute classic, thank you!!
I'm watching it as I type! Check out my series The Thing Meets Bach. I've composed a few canons there based on dialogue from the film.
@@danthefugueguy the Thing Meets Bach?! Ohhh ❤️ mashup of my dreams! Can't wait to check it, thanks!
dont get it?
There's nothing to 'get'. It's just a great clip from a great piece of music.
Awesome video!. As a student of the late great Joseph Viola co-founder of Berklee College I can really appreciate the thought & sensitivity that went into this presentation. The whole time I was at Berklee I never saw a bass sax. The only one I ever saw was on an exchange concert in high school, unfortunately when I was there the instrument was in disrepair and I couldn't try it out!. Yes more low saxes. I have a slightly off topic inquiry. I have seen several TH-cam videos with what they're calling a contrabass sax, some really are saxes but others are not. The bore does not taper out enough to call it a saxophone. Being a full octave below the baritone the bell should be twice the diameter of a baritone bell. These rogue instruments are not saxophones so what are they? They seem more practical being smaller and easier to transport and they appear to blend well with saxophones. If anyone knows what those instruments are called please let me know. Thanx...
Nice! I made a probably too literal transcription of this a few years ago (crazy time signatures rather that saying slightly out of time)
Yes at that bit in the horn part I initially thought it started before the second beat, but couldn't tell for sure since there is quite a lot of SFX going on at that point. Was easier to presume it started in the second beat and was not strictly in time for whatever reason!
Something other's have also talked about is treating timpani as a whole separate entity from percussion. We may be able to do some things, but this asks for enough rests for us to - put our sticks away, - move over to the other instrument from behind the timpani (which may take upwards of 10 seconds), - pick up the instrument or its mallets, - make sure it's comfortable, - and then play. It it also important to know that timpani mallets can be damaged when used on other instruments (e.g. suspended cymbal. The cymbal isn't smoothed down and will start pulling the mallet head apart). Thus don't write anything encouraging it
