1880's Trail Town and camping by the Missouri River
Well, we are on the last leg of our journey. We end it by visiting one of Paw paws favorite places, the 1880's Trail Town. He loves it mainly because of their collection of memorabilia from the movie "Dances with Wolves" starring Kevin Costner. The movie was shot not too far from this place. He had a great time. I hope you enjoy watching.

The Prairie Homestead
มุมมอง 1K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
How did homesteaders survive in the heat, winds, and cold of the Prairies of South Dakota, especially near the badlands? The land was practically free . Settle on 160 acres for 5 years and it was yours, according to the homestead act of 1876. Easier said than done. Let's tour one of these homesteads together and see how they did it. Enjoy.

What a great campsite we found just outside of Badlands National Park . Its called the Steer Pasture Overlook Dispersed Campsite. We spent the stormy afternoon visiting Wall Drug. This is truly a unique place. It's a great way to spend an afternoon. When we return to the campsite we find out why its called Steer Pasture and are totally stunned by the fabulous sunset. Tomorrow, we visit the Badl...

Let's Visit the Tower!
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Today we will walk around the base of Devils Tower, go on a hike, and relax by a fire. There had been a huge storm roll through a few days before and the campground hosts provided us with free firewood from the fallen trees. Also, be inspired by the folks we saw attempting to climb the tower. Enjoy.

That little town looked so neat to explore. Just beautiful scenery on this part of the country.
@hikingoutdoorfamily yes. I was showing Paw Paw the video and found myself already longing to return. So much to explore. So beautiful.
Good morning , thank you for sharing . The western town was very cool . Dancing with wolfs was a great movie . 👍🏻🇺🇸
@@inthebackyardwithdel438 I think Paw Paw has seen it 100 times. 😂
The trail town looked like fun. Love driving across country. You went from gun battles in a Western town to what sounded like gun battles (fireworks) by the Missouri River. Amen! PTL!
@bigmommasandymoore. Told ya we would get to Dances with Wolves 😅😅
@@shirleyhall1924 I bet you had a great dance too
@@bigmommasandymoore2531 🤣
Those stubborn old mules sure wouldn’t turn around. They don’t know what they missed. The wide Missouri sure was beautiful even at flood stage
Enjoyed your vidio,im a 78 year young biker dude! Can't get out an Ryde anymore, just watch videos of people having fun nowadays! And I don't like it,,im board!!!!!
@davidross5169 I understand. But glad you enjoyed the video.
Just imagine going west in a tent on wheels.pulled by a team of horses ,and a cow, maybe ,wow 20 miles at a time.or so ,thank you for taking me along,on this fourth of july.100+years ago a wagon train may have camped right where you are at,if I were there ,I would be searching with my metal detector, for sure!!!!
@@davidross5169 I thought about that because I read about trappers and mountain men. They may have camped along the Missouri right at that very spot.
We were there ,I believe!
Well they looked at all the open country and felt it was a great place to make a homestead and farming or ranching. Problem is they were not aware of the brutal weather and living conditions the Dakotas have. The only people that knew about it and how to handle it was the Indians. But they had been there for hundreds of years.
Do you need to say there's a stove, there's a " piano", there's a door etc? You think people are blind? Seriously...
😡
Thank you. I appreciate your critique, and I am striving to improve. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! Well done❤
I think about those hardy pioneers who survived out here. There's a great book "The Horse and Buggy Doctor" that gives a great picture of this life. Good, solid people. Thanks for sharing!
@WanderingMonkHikes i'll have to read that one. I just finished 2 books and have one more about a crow Indian chief. I love reading historical books about the areas we visit.
Good morning , that had to be one tough life to survive out there . Thanks for sharing .
Nice historical tour. Must have been a very tough place to live. Lots of prairie dogs there now.
SD is beautiful but living on the prairie in those days had to be the most rugged of individuals.
@HikeCamp absolutely, and the most adaptable and creative.
This was so wonderful to see. Thank you.
Nice campsite with bad lands scenery outside your camper. Ya gotta stop at Wall Drug while your out there. 😊
Great video of Mt Rushmore while driving in. Like the entrance to the candy company showing ice cream!
Sounded like some good Western history in Deadwood.
@bestillonthetrail234 there was, but I regretted not visiting Mt. Moriah cemetery where the gravesites of Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane were. Oh well.
@@shirleyhall1924 That would have been neat to visit those gravesites.
Loved the badlands. My son and I hiked out into the middle of an area that had some grassy flats in the middle of many giant walls. It was fun to climb down, figure our way through a maze of sand castles and then climb up to the flat we were looking at from the parking lot. It looked similar to the one way out at the 6:23 mark.
Now that sounds like fun!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video . 👍🏻🇺🇸
Awesome share
I believe, after watching a video by Too Tall, that it was a loon. Didn't know they called out at night.
There were a lot of trees down from that storm. Thankfully the trail was cleared. You had some nice hikes and views of the tower.
@bestillonthetrail234 thanks, it was a great area for hiking.
Fun visiting with all the prairie dogs! Probably taste like chicken. 🤣
@@bestillonthetrail234 🤣🤣🤣
Love seeing all the elk. We just got back from WA and saw a few herds out there. No White Buffalo but lot's of white snow. We had lots of snow still on the big mountains in WA. You sure saw lots of wildlife!
Outstanding video , my father told me when he and my mom went out there that he understood why the Native Americans fought so hard for that land . Thanks for sharing .👍🏻🇺🇸
@inthebackyardwithdel438 yes but it was a hard place to survive. The homestead act was successful to get folks out there but very few stayed.
Excellent video
Thanks Dave!
Awesome road trip with beautiful scenery 😍 🇨🇦☕️☕️
What a great trip. It is an amazing country. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.
Very nice here throughout all the best be safe and healthy cheers 🤗🤗👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Those rocks are so very impressive. I hope to see it one day in real live! 😊
Mt Rushmore gives me chills . I can remember as a little boy . When the TV stations use to sign off the air at midnight , they played the National Anthem and showed the Thunderbirds flying past Mt Rushmore . That candy store was off the chain . Thanks for sharing . 👍🏻🇺🇸
@inthebackyardwithdel438 I was shocked to learn that they were supposed to be from head to waist. That would have been incredible. It's incredible like it is but too bad they ran out of funding. Thanks for watching.
Makes me want to just get in my truck and drive out there now !👍🏻🇺🇸☕️
Very cool
All I can say is WOW , such beauty . I am chewing at the bit to go . I have a lot of planning to go . Once again , thank you for sharing y’all’s journey . 👍🏻🇺🇸
Talk about a town with a lot of history. It has changed quite a bit since I was there but somehow much the same.
That is one town that is definitely on my Bucket list . The HBO show deadwood was pretty rough . Thanks for sharing 👍🏻🇺🇸
Great hike. There's a gift shop at the top of the tower that is a gem
@@handicappedtraveler yeah. I liked that answer. 🤣
Nice driving across the country and excellent stop with all the history of Custer’s Last Stance.
The weeping wall was really flowing! Nice to have signs which help identify the trees. The cedars were big! Excellent views as you drove through the mountains! Must have been scary being in the passenger seat along the cliffs.
@bestillonthetrail234 I always hate being in the passenger seat and looking over those cliffs but would rather be there than driving that road. 😆 yes, the Weeping Wall was so flowing. I told papa it was more like the wailing wall.
So freaking gorgeous 😍
You had some interesting neighbors!
@@bestillonthetrail234 and loud! They woke us up. 🤣
We visited the tour over 20 years ago. It’s an amazing pace. Thanks for sharing.
The Tower makes Clingman’s Dome look like a cake walk. 😂 I was afraid y’all would rope climb the face of the Tower. Yes, wind storms out there are fierce! Glad you got to see your deer. Thanks for sharing!
