Ghost Recon Breakpoint: A Retrospective 4 Years Later | JCG
Breakpoint's journey has been interesting, because ultimately it was the updates that made it a better game than it was at launch. In a similar vein to how Cyberpunk 2.0 turned the game around, Breakpoint's changes helped to improve some, but not all, of its flaws. But where does Breakpoint stand in 2024? Do some of its flaws still exist, or is it better now? Let's find out as this is Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, 4 years later.

Game Information:
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is an online tactical shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Paris and published by Ubisoft. The game was released worldwide on 4 October 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and on 18 December 2019 for Stadia. The game is the eleventh installment in the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise and is a narrative sequel to the 2017 video game Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.
The game is set in an open world environment called Auroa, a fictional island chain in the Pacific Ocean. The player takes on the role of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony "Nomad" Perryman a U.S. Special Operation Forces service member sent to the island to investigate a series of disturbances involving Skell Technology, a military contractor based on Auroa.
Upon release, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint received mixed reviews from critics, with criticism for its mechanics and mission design. The game failed to meet sales expectations and therefore was a commercial disappointment. Live service support for the game ended on 5 April 2022 shortly after Ubisoft added non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to the game.

So What Makes a Good Gear System? | JCG
มุมมอง 278ปีที่แล้ว
Gear systems: Good or bad? Despite many people thinking that gear is inherently grindy or an indicator of a bad game, that doesn't always seems to be the case. Maybe it's the implementation of the gear itself in games that truly make or break the acceptance of these systems, but is it even necessary at all? Games today are just being released incomplete & untested! Lots of improvements were made for sure but it still left a sour taste in my mouth. They chopped up the story just to sell it in 3 separate parts. “Moa Island” what would’ve come from that I wonder.

    I could write an essay on how this game could have been cooler or more engaiging. Auroa is a made up place and it feels like it, this game feels like has not involved any (or competent) military\ gun experts counsultants. It's nit picking but if i have 1 round in the chamber i don't get why i have to lose the bullet and why there's the racking animation. The lack of cqb. The buildings are poorly made and confusing. Way to many guns that don't feel unique of different also the UI sucks when choosing one Wildlands did it better. All in all if you do a game with tom clancy's name with the fear of insulting someone (example bolivia) you get this a grey emotionless slop.

    I bought wildlands day 1 and really enjoyed it. I played the breakpoint beta and thought it was one of the worst AAA games I'd ever played, mainly because of gear score. Being instantly killed because some enemies had some kind of magical items woth higher numbers than me was really annoying. I forgot about it since release but recently I saw that they had released immersive mode that could be tweaked to remove gear score, dumb down the amount of drones just flying around etc. and decided to try it again since it was only $20 for the delux edition for black Friday. Ive been playing for a week and I'm having a ton of fun with it. I love the healing system, prone camo and the climbing/sliding on hills and mountains. Also as a non-Spanish speaker, i like being able to understand the enemies. The map is also way more interesting with a lot more POIs and random patrols in the wild. I was really weary, but i really love this game now. I just wish they had made it good at launch.

    It's unfortunate that Ubisoft abandoned Breakpoint. As someone who enjoys military stealth games, this game is excellent! I tried Wildlands (after finishing Breakpoint) and I agree that the cartel atmosphere and story is more compelling...but I couldn't get past the gunplay in Wildlands. Breakpoint's gunplay is smooth and the sound of the weapons are top notch!

    The only thing keeping me from playing this game is the lack of an offline patch. Wildlands is pretty fun and ive found myself enjoying it alot so hopefully the new one has a few of the extra tweaks that Breakpoint has in terms of its cqc animations and combined it with Wildlands AI and more enjoyable open world+the aggressive animations from Future Soldier and offline patch and we'd have fun

    I hated this game when it dropped. Tried over the years and still hated it. Randomly picked it up about a month ago and I’m loving it. Can’t explain it, but I’m having so much fun stealthily taking out bases. My only regret was not playing during the supported drops and limited time missions.

    It's basically open world Splinter Cell (episode 2 is a head nod of acknowledgement to this) If you put it on immersive mode and disable gear levelling then use map and compass for nav and objective finding it's great. I personally think it's a brilliant game and just bought it again last week for steam deck oled, having it on the go is another plus and I'm enjoying it all over again.

    Most people I've talked to say breakpoint was a step back from wildlands, for the most part I disagree, except when it comes to the civilian NPCs. The civilians in wildlands were WAY more realistic. Start a gunfight in the middle of town and you have to really watch your shots because you might be lining up a target only for a civilian to panic run in front of you right as your about to fire, as where in breakpoint that just stand there or crouch in fear. Besides that I personally think breakpoint is way better than wildlands, but that's just my opinion

    In terms of world and story, Wildlands is MILES ahead. The way the AI teammates interacct with the story etc was obviously a favorite of fans of wildlands and they completely removed it at the start of breakpoint. Then they had to go the Gear score nonsense route in a ghost recon game smh. Breakpoint was filled with so many horrible decisions and I have so many gripes with it. I can't know it for the player movement and stuff but not much else there to praise in my opinion.

    You talk so fast its hard for me to follow lol. I get it though, if you talked slower this video would be hours long. Thank you for all of the information, im considering buying this game. Enjoyed wildlands, but didnt like how the game barely had cutscenes and was so repetitive. I dont play online either. So pretty unsure if i want to purchase this game on ps5. Hopefully i can get some more informarion from the remaining 40 minutes or your video to help me decide. Edit: Ok yeah i think im going to pass. Watching you free the civilian NPC and then him acting like hes never seen you before and asking who you are two seconds later when you take your gun out is not something i want to deal with. I can see him acting like that if you were pointing the gun directly at him but you weren't. All emersion lost. Also so lame that they only have civilians concentrated in their little communities when they had civilians everywhere in Wildlands like it was a real living, breathing environment. Plot seems lame. Would much rather be fighting against cartels and a South American dictator then some mercenaries on a weird and fake island. And you only have yourself and not your ghost team? Why in the heck would they do that? That's one of the best parts of the ghost recon series. I'm disliking this game more and more as I watch this video lol.

    • @JustCG
      @JustCG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did go bit fast in the video, but thanks for sticking with it anyway! I would say that from a story perspective there's very good reason for civilians not being on the road since restrictions were imposed and thus limiting them to these different areas. Whether you like that or not is really up to you, but Sentinel presence in the open world isn't particularly strong either. Also, you do get teammates! But I don't think they are built up the same way, they act as support and not much dialogue and characterisation are done for them. You'll never be quite alone with them, but they aren't as involved in the story. You could always give the game a try when its on sale, it's good to form your own opinions from your own experience as well!

    • @Gdub33
      @Gdub33 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JustCG for sure. I might give it a try someday when Im bored. I wish they would come out with Wildlands 2 or another GR altogether that's more like Wildlands than breakpoint. Ubisoft made some of my favorite games growing up (GR, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs 2). But they're making each series more mediocre with each release. Thanks again for the informative video!

  • @jj_1808
    @jj_1808 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very nice essay, really enjoyed it. My take is, that like you pointed out, the world feels almost dead, the atmosphere is juts not there. And in addition to what you said about the characters, a lot of the dialog with important NPC is downright cringe at times. And even though the gun play is a lot better, things like shooting a suppressed 50.cal withing a meter of an enemy, and it then not alerting them, like it did in wild-lands. It feels like, who ever made Wildlands did not make Breakpoint. When they added the 3 AI NPC teammates they forgot to add voice-lines, they feel far more A then I.

    • @JustCG
      @JustCG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would have loved more characterisation and dialogue for the teammates. If Ubisoft ever plans on bringing this team back, I would definitely want some good lore references to their time on Auroa

    I played wildlands then i bought breakpoint after all these content updates and play modes had been added and i enjoyed it. I had the luck of not playing it at release and this is something i have come to realise about games today. The only dev you can trust for day one release are some indie studios because the quality of their game will make or break them and a few AAA devs like Fromsoftware. I just mostly don't get hyped about day one because the games will mostly be lacklustre or buggy. I played Jedi survivor recently and surprisingly all the bugs that people were talking about at release were gone. 1 year later lots of fun.

    • @JustCG
      @JustCG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get that, a lot of games now release with Day One patches, and even then sometimes it's not all ironed out. What is important is that they improve upon it, so breakpoint is really one of those that sticks out differently, content-wise, to its Day One counterpart

    I loved the world they built with this island. If it was a real place, I'd want to move there. The problem was the plot and story. It just wasn't that compelling. I liked that it wasn't another "great white savior" trope like "WildLands". I loved wandering the island, fighting the big bots. Seeing and exploring the buildings and campuses they built. The gun-play was top notch. The drones were pretty deadly. It just felt like a missed opportunity. Someone should take that engine and build a fantastic story out of the bones.

    I appreciate your in-depth analysis. However, Breakpoint was an insufferable snoozefest to me even by Ubisoft standards. The biggest flaw was its broken enemy AI. I could see Breakpoint was trying too hard to be its own Metal Gear Solid but the enemies' simplistic behavioral patterns made it impossible to achieve that goal. For example, when you are on a rooftop, they always come up stairs in line. This means you can just wait patiently for them to appear at the end of the stairs and pop their heads one by one. It was a huge disappointment that eventually turned me away.

    • @JustCG
      @JustCG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I kinda get that, positioning yourself right at the edge of the stairs make it an absolute arcadey shoot fest. I think on the ground it probably worked a little bit better but, unless it was specific drone operators, snipers or rockets, it did just feel like cannon fodder sometimes

    Breakpoint was made on a fictional island due to the fall out Ubisoft faced after Wildlands. If you know you know.

      I remember Ubisoft getting flack from the Bolivian government for its portrayal, which I think it’s what you’re referring to. It could’ve motivated this shift for sure, but it also meant that they had a lot of big shoes to fill for world building

    The biggest fault with Breakpoint on release was just how dead and fake the world felt. Wildlands' Bolivia felt like a real place that people lived in and its towns and cities had traffic between them and you could see the citizens doing normal day to day things. Little shops and restaurants and such, delivery trucks driving around, cabs, etc. It wasn't super sophisticated, like there wasn't actual routines or such with the NPCs, but it made Bolivia feel like a real place that your characters were operating in. The island in Breakpoint was just a random jumble of buildings with no logical connections between them. People didn't live near where they worked, and there was no traffic or mass transit or anything to connect them. There would just be a random building or factory or other such out on the map, with random dudes in the wilderness to fight who didn't seem to have any reason to be anywhere you found them other than the ones guarding the randomly placed building clusters. I knew it from the Alpha they released. Told my friends "This isn't fixable." They were like "It's just an Alpha, the release will be better," and bought it anyway. It's still a joke years later. I offered to buy it when it got down to $10, because we did have fun with Wildlands. They won't go back to it, lol.

      There’s parts of the design that left me wanting, but there were certainly places where it worked like the farming area or the central Skell city down South. Would’ve loved some more NPC diversity, just felt more concentrated in other factions and not Skell

    What always killed me about breakpoint was how it came after wildland and managed to use more cutscenes to make a more boring story and worse gameplay. Story wise, Josiah Hill never should have existed when Weaver or Midas would’ve filled the role better since players just spent an entire game with them instead of a random guy retconned into Nomads history that was forced in

      Definitely would’ve loved to see more of the squad and see developments over the different episodes, and the new teammates too

    Damn i missed both of the ghost recon games so i got them both on sale for 20€ so i blasted through Wildlands on Extreme after that now i am on Breakpoint and damn i am playing it on all extreme settings plus i started modding the game i have to say as it is now it is way underrated…feels way better than other modern games the realism you get with all the hardest settings plus mods is insane
