My heart goes out to this father. It's a tragedy that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I've hiked up Half Dome and can say that it's as safe as each person chooses to make it. Everyone has a choice on how safe they're going to be on that hike. It's all about risk management. If you start hiking later morning, your risk increases due to the high likelihood of afternoon storms. If you choose to not use a harness configured for Via Ferrata (two carabiners each with straps attached to the harness), your risk increases. If you choose to not wear gloves or wear slippery gloves instead of Nitrile gloves (Nitrile is best!), your risk increases. If it rains while you're on the cables or summit, and you continue to descend, your risk increases. You can choose to stop, hang on tight, and wait out the storm. Sure, there will be a risk of lightning strikes, but there's also a risk of slipping on the wet rock. It's a well known fact that most people fall off Half Dome because of wet rock. The cables are in place on Half Dome to provide the means for people to be safe. If people choose to not use a harness that they can clip into those cables, they're risking injury or death from a fall. It's like driving a car. If you choose to not use your seat belt, you risk serious injury or death in a crash. The car manufacturer can't force you to use your seat belt, stop you from speeding, prevent you from being distracted, or any number of other things to avoid an accident. You must take responsibility for yourself to be safe. The park provides lots of useful information to help you avoid injury on this hike up Half Dome, but each person must heed the warnings that park officials provide. Personally, I think the park could require every hiker to have a harness to hike up Half Dome. Park rangers are already checking permits (most of the time) before allowing people to proceed up the steepest parts of Half Dome, so they could also just confirm that every person has a harness. It's something that most people will not do for themselves, but it is a simple policy that the park could implement. Will every person actually use their harness on the cables? Like car seatbelts, many people probably would not use their harness, but again, it's their own personal responsibility to keep themselves safe.

Yosemite isn't Disneyland. It never has been and never will be. There's a great book titled "Off the Wall: Death in Yosemite". It should be required reading for anyone wanting to enter the park. Same goes for the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone - both have books specifically pointing out the hazards.

"Dad demands change." Why are modern-day parents incapable of accepting personal responsibility? She could just as easily have been killed up there by lightning. (Which has happened to others.) Would he then demand that lightning never strikes half dome again? It truly sucks when any parent has to bury their child. But I have a really tough time feeling sympathy when said parent deflects and then "demands" that we all somehow childproof the world.

Freak storm? please come on now. This horrific accident was avoidable and the responsibly lies on the visitors. So there was not a cloud in the sky on the way up and when you got there? You mean after you thought you accomplished your personal challenge with you your daughter, that getting off was going to be easy? I have hiked that exact hike and pulled my way up the cables more than 24+ times and I have called off the hike/climb more than 15 times due to weather. 10 of the 15 times we were past Little Yosemite and had to turn it around. I even stopped at the saddle just before the cables and turned our group around and said "I am out" due to light clouds in the area that were carrying rain. Two women from France said this was their dream and they were not turning around. I gave them my gloves and extra water and begged them to change their mind, but they came all they way from France and they climbed real mountains before and that I was a joke for doing what I was doing. Well guess what happened to them and it was not pleasant? Yosemite has unexpected storms every week that drop heavy loads and then sometimes disburse faster than they arrived. Just because you don't see them from the Valley floor doesn't mean they don't exist. The Half Dome Hike/climb blocks one's view for 7 of the 9.2 miles (from Curry Village to trailhead is 1 mile) of your climb. So just because you came all the way from Arizona and made a horrific decision and did not heed any of the warnings nor did you read the warning signs, you think that there should be some kind of change in the system? A friend of mind never took responsibility for her son and his heroin addict. When he was so bad that they had to admit him to a hospital for multiple reasons and while he was there he tried escaping twice and slipped and fell both time due to shooting up in his legs. The third time he tried to escape he had no leg strength to support him and he fell and hit his head and died. My friend wanted to changes things at the hospital so that it would not happen to others, yet she ignored all the other signs in her own sons life ... like admitting her son had a drug problem. People have to change and be held accountable. My brother was there in Yosemite when it happened and his description of the weather was not that of a freak storm, but rather a unexperienced group of folks that did not understand Mother Nature in this part of the country.

Other states need to stop bussing these homeless drug addicts to this state as well and S.F. needs to stop enabling them with drug paraphernalia.

I hiked down after a freak storm , I’m pretty strong and I still slipped and it was sketchy . I made it down but watched others - where close to an accident . Sorry for your loss

Half Dome can be a very dangerous hike and the NPS has don't very little to mitigate the danger. My first thought when I did this hike is it is very dangerous for ordinary people. Most people arrive at the cables very unaware of how steep the cables are and how slippery the granite is. Many people panic, freeze up or turn back. All these situations cause back ups and delays. Not to mention if someone above you on the cables falls or slips they are coming directly at you and there is nowhere to go. The NPS permit system also puts pressure on people to complete the hike despite their apprehension and fear since they can't do it another day. It's time for the NPS to be more than a toll booth collecting money while people risk their lives. More footholds, maybe requiring harnesses or better information regarding the conditions and risks of death or injury.

This happens every time some days in a wild place. The wilderness just isn't the wilderness if you make it completely safe.

You should not make that climb without some kind of harness you can belt off with A climbing helmet may have saved her life . This is true mountain climbing and proper safety gear is important.

Seems like an attempt to place blame on the NPS - by him and the tone of the reporting. Americans have serious problems with taking responsibility for the decisions they make. It's a free country supposedly - they were free to go up there into the wilderness, keep it that way.

I'm sorry the father had to see his child pass away. It's the wrong direction to see a child go before the parent. On the other hand, I think anything can happen whether you do an extreme hike or easy hike. Or just driving out your driveway. It was her time and I'm sure she had an amazing time with her father. To the father, I hope you can move on from this. You two seem to have shared a lot of great times together.
