A Legacy of Rabbinic Vision - Chancellor Dr. Ismar Schorsch in conversation with Rabbi Elie Spitz
Join us for a special conversation with Dr. Ismar Schorsch, chancellor emeritus of The Jewish Theological Seminary and a distinguished scholar of Jewish history, as he reflects on his personal and professional journey. In this intimate program, Dr. Schorsch will explore his father Rabbi Emil Schorsch’s experience as a rabbi in pre-war Germany, his family’s life-altering decision to leave for America following Kristallnacht, and the profound impact of these formative years. We will delve into topics such as the influence of the Breslau Seminary, the challenges of assimilation in Hamburg, and the spiritual and intellectual legacy passed from father to son. Dr. Schorsch will also share insights from his own scholarship, including his work on Leopold Zunz and reflections on his 20 years as JTS chancellor, offering words of wisdom and encouragement for the future of American Jewry. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with one of the foremost voices in Jewish academia and leadership.
Dr. Ismar Schorsch is chancellor emeritus of The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and the Rabbi Herman Abramovitz Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish History. A renowned scholar and leader, Dr. Schorsch served as JTS chancellor for 20 years, advancing Conservative Judaism as a dynamic expression of Rabbinic tradition and elevating JTS’s global impact. His leadership included the creation of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education, the expansion of the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem, and the founding of the Solomon Schechter High School of New York. He championed Jewish education, equality in Israel, and modern Jewish scholarship, receiving honors such as the Moses Mendelssohn Prize and honorary degrees from Tufts University and the Russian State University for the Humanities. An advocate for public issues like religious pluralism, environmental ethics, and healthcare reform, Dr. Schorsch's influence extended far beyond academia. Since retiring in 2006, he has returned to scholarship, with works like Leopold Zunz: Creativity in Adversity and Canon Without Closure. Ordained at JTS in 1962, he holds advanced degrees from JTS and Columbia University, where he earned his PhD in Jewish History.
Rabbi Elie Kaplan Spitz, a spiritual leader and scholar specializing in topics of spirituality and Judaism, teaches, writes and speaks to a wide range of audiences. He served as the rabbi of Congregation B’nai Israel in Tustin, California, for over three decades and served as member of the Rabbinical Assembly Committee on Law and Standards for twenty years. Rabbi Spitz is author of Duets on Psalms: Drawing New Meaning from Ancient Words, co-authored with Rabbi Jack Riemer, Healing from Despair: Choosing Wholeness in a Broken World; Does the Soul Survive? A Jewish Journey to Belief in Afterlife, Past Lives & Living with Purpose and Increasing Wholeness: Jewish Wisdom and Guided Meditations to Strengthen and Calm Body, Heart, Mind and Spirit (all Jewish Lights) and many articles dealing with spirituality and Jewish law. Rabbi Spitz spent the past 17 months teaching the Psalms with half-hour presentations for each Psalm (recently completing all 150 Psalms!). To enjoy all or some of the 150 Psalm sessions, visit this LINK.

Ironic a white dude tells a middle eastern looking guy you don't look Jewish. Someone could have told them that Jews comes from the Middle East. Delusional. Sephardic history is well documented prior to 1100. I don't think the other group that thinks is white has such as rich history.

Yes after the war and with his PTSD I think he very much prioritized his soul and sanity with his reclusion and meditation and writing how awful the public felt entitled to his company or work just because he was popular stalking him and such and he was non violent so would have been horrified by those claiming to be inspired by Holden Caulfield when committing violent crimes too mentally ill or stupid to appreciate a work of fiction.

Jeremiah 35:3,5-10 [3]So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, [5]And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pitchers full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, Drink wine. [6]But they said, We will drink no wine, for Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, commanded us: You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons, forever. [7]Neither shall you build a house or sow seed or plant a vineyard or have them; but you shall dwell all your days in tents, that you may live many days in the land where you are temporary residents. [8]And we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days-we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters- [9]And not to build ourselves houses to live in; nor do we have vineyard or field or seed. [10]But we have dwelt in tents and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our ancestor commanded us.

Ironically, in the story that you are telling “God” and Plato a both acting out the role of “Nation Builder”. Is this why both Joseph and Jesus are said to be architects/techtons? Just like Plato suggests making claims of antiquity or divine origins to make a state and its laws, Rabbis leveraged the same idea to validate the Torah?

it's a good thing he challenges the monopoly of the rabanus on Cashrut, and it has to be challenged on family law also: the get/gittin have to be separated completly from the state. the Rabanus is a reformed institution, they don't keep any law of the Shulchan Aruch and poskim in the Batei Dinim Rabaniim, coercing gittin against the law of the Torah, and permitting married women to the street, and multiplying bastards. By the way they grape pillage and end the lives of more than 300 to 450 fathers every year who's crime is to have married a selfish woman and multiplying the seed of Israel.

Superb overview of one of our greatest modern philosophers. I wonder why so many people want to lift the haram (?), I think it would just be a bad case of crude revisionism. I love your artistic project and intentions. Without art there is no emotional, social, and cultural flourishing. I haven't lived in Israel since the early 1990's, but the periphery in the 1970's and 1980's felt so remote, provincial, abandoned and any motivated young person tried to leave for the center. Israel has come a long way of course and on my many visits across the decades much more of Israel feels livable when it comes to culture and art, except where there is a dominant religious population. I watched Afula go from an agricultural hub to a religious stronghold. My relatives had to move to the center. By the way I spent a lot of time in Nahariya during my army service (Golani) during the early 80's. Even then it felt like an island of culture in the periphery. There were still old timers from the founding generation.
