What a find ! Panpipes playing that could have been brought to North America by slaves from specific Central Africa regions, where it is still alive, although it could also have been an independent innovation.
Why would White people listen to the blues? No reason, right? So no White audience, no big record deals. Blues industry would now be playing local bars and backyard barbecues. Would that be better? F*ck Carlin.
This is so great, seen Robert Penn live. I've been trying to track down a CD or mp3s of his album "Mightier Than The Sword," especially that song "The Other Man." If you have it can you please post a video. They only have it on LP and I don't have a turntable. Thanks, great channel :)

Did this film get released in 1931, and what month? The footage may have been earlier. His last session was in Chicago on October 7th, 1929, and according to some biographers, Thomas died in 1930. I wonder if we could get a clearer answer on when the footage was taken, and when the event on film took place. It sure looks like him. How many performers played quills, strummed and had a high capo? The list is not long.
Sorry for my belated answer. All I know about the film is posted at the description. I agree with you, no one comes to mind that played like him (at least on record).
What people don't get is that Blues is Black. When White people get involved it becomes Rock n Roll, as was the case with Zeppelin and the Stones, both of whom were heavily inspired by the Blues. You can claim that Vaughan or any other white guy sings the blues, but that's just a faulty syllogism. They sing rock! Just because you call them a Blues singer doesn't make them one. As for the people talking about how the Blues can be "White": yes it can, it's called Folk Music! While Blues is rooted in Slave Music sung on Plantations, the traditions of which were passed down to post-Emancipation Black Sharecroppers like Muddy Waters, who in turn brought the music to Chicago with the Migrations thereto; Folk Music is rooted in areas like Appalachia and the Midwest, where poverty stricken whites were trapped in feudal company towns and/or were forced to work in dangerous Mines and Factories for Robber Barons (i.e., Sixteen Tons/Dark as a Dungeon). Folk Music also told the story of suffering Farmer's during periods like The Dust Bowl, when families lost their ancestral homes and were driven into abject poverty (setting captured in the Grapes of Wrath - Music: Dust Bowl Ballads, Hollis Brown). These White experiences (coupled with other events like the Civil War and Wild West) birthed Country, Bluegrass, and Folk. Of these three genres, Folk contained the most soul of White music, hence it being "White Blues", with singers like Woody Guthrie championing the plight of the poor white in the 30s and 40s. To this end, Guthrie is probably the closest a white singer has ever come to being a true bluesman, yet even he is not one. Now, when Country, Gospel, Folk, and the Blues eventually converged in the 50s, you got Rockabillies like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash; Those individuals that set the standard for the mainstream music industry to follow. Especially the conception of Rock N Roll, as Elvis became the Rockstar Prototype for all later performers. One final comment, and this is crucial: Blues was associated with Electric guitar, which was given a pass by Whites because they had deemed it an inferior genre of music. Who cared if Blacks used such a "vulgar" instrument on their Race Records, not like most Whites were paying attention. In contrast, Folk Music was distinctly associated with the acoustic guitar, as the acoustic guitar was the means through which Folk had always been played - itself a reflection of the impoverished conditions Folk Music emerged from. This is why there was such an outcry when Dylan went Electric. Because it was seen as a betrayal of Folk, and by extent a betrayal of the Working White Class whom Folk Music had come to represent. If the Blues had been White the whole time, then there would not have been a controversy about Dylan ("the voice of the people") going Electric, because Blues was already associated with electric guitars.
Amen!
One of the best.

I wonder what he’d think of Van Halen. White guy playing the blues great
Well, besides covering John Brim’s “Ice Cream Man” on the first album, don’t think EVH played much “blues”, and don’t think he considered himself a blues player. He was great and really groundbreaking, but don’t ear his blues influences as in other players like Hendrix, for example.

Thank you for posting this. I was looking randomly through some stuff on Wikipedia, and saw articles on multiple Luther Johnsons, one of whom was nicknamed Guitar Junior. But I could see that wasn't the Guitar Junior my dad had an album by. But I saw there was another Guitar Jr., and this is the one. I was a kid when the Broke an' Hungry album came out, but I remembered the cover, and the track "The Guitar and the Horse." ❤
So glad you found this song! Yes, the Guitar Junior moniker and the different Luther Johnson’s could definitely confuse anyone!

A few seconds of silent footage of an old black guy playing guitar who may or may not be Henry Thomas. This film poses more questions than it answers.
Yes, indeed. But the opinion of some of the experts in the description box seems to indicate he might be “the” Henry Thomas.
