The Ponytailed Pensioner - Steve Bennett
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ส.ค. 2013
Britain has wonderful footpaths. I love walking them and I fully support our "right to roam" - responsibly, of course.
I am a SWCP "completer". I walked this magnificent path with my school pal, Andy. You will get to know him in some of my videos. I walk solo too; including trying to do the river Wye source to mouth.
I publish a new video every week on a Saturday morning. Some are very current, others a nostalgic look back at some of my previous walking adventures and mishaps. Please forgive the dodgy camera-work, wind-noise and occasional mis-pronunciations.
I hope that you enjoy them, give me some feedback and subscribe to this channel. Most of all 'though I hope that you are inspired to go out for a decent walk. One of the simplest and most affordable ways of managing our well-being.
Happy walking, see you on the footpath!

"I nearly drowned on my first solo walk where I was attempting making a video!
I shot this footage right at the beginning of my solo tramping . A very local walk too.
Covid had been around for a year or so and I was going "stir crazy". This short video is the edit of an enforced solo walk from my own front door in Frampton Cotterell and across the countryside to around 600ft up on the Cotswold Edge at Hinton Hill Fort. I was on my own and spontaneously started to film stuff. Completely unplanned - so no change there then!
I only edited this recently from my old iPhone footage. No external mic or windshield so forgive me for the wind noise. I will post another one from "back in the PonyTailed Pensioner day" next Saturday. This time my first attempt at using a GoPro properly ... judge for yourselves!

This was another walking first. I got both my boys, Jamie & Ben out on to the mighty SWCP. We walked a stretch that Andy and I did a few years ago. I had forgotten how tough it was! The guidebook marks Dartmouth to Brixham as being strenuous. We agreed; it was. "Lets go camping Best Beloved said, it'll be fun she said" - Brixham in October!

We have been talking about the four of us, plus Boots, going away for far too long. Well, in October, we managed it. Not the ideal camping month. Unless you have a bespoke and comfy van, of course! Best Beloved, Boots and i were in the large green tent; Jamie had a small red one-person tent to himself. They flapped and shook in the wind and the incessant rain for near on 18 hours straight. City hiking Bristol style

This was a first for me. Yep, I have walked through other urban areas. Not many cities mind. Hereford at 53,000, Bath 94,000 and the biggest so far the port city of Plymouth with a quarter of a million folk are all places I have tramped through on my walks. Not Bristol before ‘though. Bristol is by far the biggest city I have walked in so far at over 475,000 of us. This is certainly not the las...

SWCP 45 MILES TO GO - The last three days walking the mightiest of coast paths

A lovely, golden sunny day in the Wye Valley walking fans. This was a special walk. Without really intending to I set a PB for my walking. The longest tramp I have ever managed; 23 miles. This incorporated a bus ride, a benchmark and a beer. Yep the Cathedral and all its finery is great but Ronnie Bradford & Ricky George are my Hereford high points. Had to be the rocks in Ross. Tramping the Sussex Downs My 18-mile walk from Hickstead to Fulking and back again.

I found myself winding my way across the flat fields of the Low Weald on a warm summer's day in Sussex. The crops were ripe and green, the grass turning golden and the birdsong was joyful. I had a skirmish with a busy road with no walkway and had to venture into Pondtail Woods. I could have done with a machete for sure. I was somewhat scornful about the house with a moat but my spirits lifted a...

This was as uplifting as it was inspiring. To a player a stunning and emphatic set of personal and collective performances. A pair of wins guided by a brilliant Coach - Mark Alleyne and on the field Jack Taylor. The potential has been there; it was realised yesterday. A memorable day and the semi-final win against Sussex reminded me of 1973 and my dad taking me. The involvement of Syd too made ...

I've taken a break from my Wye Valley walking. I went to Sussex for a week with my best beloved and her business partner Hasan. The "Wholesome Hub", their business, was trading at Hickstead the premier horse show-ground in Britain. An oasis of well tended green lawns and golden sandy show-rings for the horses to trot, canter, gallop and jump in. I left the horses, their riders, stable-staff and...

My best beloved Emma & I tramped off to Odense in Denmark. We stayed two nights there and one night in Copenhagen. We had a blast. The gig was on a warm - and dry - sunny evening in a large park. Bruce & The E-Street band performed 30 songs. Utter joy from start to finish. Planning our next gig already. We couldn't get as close as we did at Sunderland back in May but this was a decent spot.

Glorious
Glad you like it - used a lot of your footage!
An early video shoot coming out this Saturday.
Nice 🥰
I'm at Gloucester, it's a strange joy to see countryside like that around me, brambles and all
Firstly, thank you so much for watching. Stingers and brambles are part & parcel of the walkers lot when you wear shorts - 😂. I agree it is a stunning part of the world, cherish what is on your own doorstep! ATB.
Just checked and I am chuffed to see that this is my most watched video. I am going to re-edit my SWCP footage over the next few months. Look out for an updated version of this "walking fans"

I walked right by it without spotting it i think. Ive checked photos and it must have been completely overgrown. Heading for one down at fFax Bourton in Somerset soon.
Uptick for what I hope was a Led Zeppelin reference.
Thanks for watching! Yes, Zeppelin references do pop up in my videos. Saw them 2975 Earl’s Court. Unforgettably brilliant.
@@stevebennett8996 How fortunate you were.
I try 😂😂😂
😂 most excellent
It was nice to hear a reference to 'daps' and did you have a dap bag to put them in?
Hi Janet. Firstly, thank you for watching. I thought that I had replied to you? Obviously not, so sorry about that. Yes, I did have a daps bag. Home made, by mum, of course. Drawstring and black cloth if i recall correctly. When is your latest video out? ATB - Steve the Ponytailed Pensioner!
It was nice to hear a reference to 'daps' and did you have a dap bag to put them in?
Yes I did - a black drawstring canvas bag. Home made by mum of course. Thank you for watching!
Very good. Where was hair and make up for that leaf on your bonnet tho?

Nice and fast-moving. Entertaining. P
Thank you Pete. off camping real soon ... in October!

I am sure it is not everybody. It is a thing. People you meet tend to avoid eye contact and not engage. A shame and it is not liken that outside of the metropolis. I do try and got blanked. I wont give up!
@@stevebennett8996 yeah very much aware of it. Just need to leave London to realise people are actually friendly elsewhere eh…

Cracking spot
I hiked thes routs in my youth with some naval and marine cousins, as part of the southdowns way from beachy head to winchester. This was back in the 1980s, it was mostly wilderness and bad to fight your way through in places. Took 4 days to get to arundel afer which we had to go back to portsmouth. It was a gokd run. I am to old for this now, as im nearly 70.
Brilliant
🥰🥰
Geology, structure with wine related products, excellent, thanks for sharing your walk.
Thank you for your kind words. I started make videos of my walks for my family and circulating them using YT. I lover making them and it is a bonus when someone watches. I am loading one up to YT once a week, on a Saturday. ATB Mark and thank you again.
Nice flint
Knapped too
Love your politics fella. Great walk and great rant!!
Thanks for watching. Been trying to up my film making and editing skills since I did this. I still rant from time-to-time. Royals and private property nonsense incense me still. Don't get me started on the feudal system aka Duchy of Cornwall. ATB to you.
My kinda video! Very interesting
I am delighted you watched it. Funnily enough I re-watched the film recently. Truly groundbreaking and genre-creating. So thank you for your kind comment. I’ve just done a couple of walks on the South Downs. I might put something out on the Devils Dyke. Thanks again.
@@stevebennett8996 it really was unique at its time! Aside from nature I’m really into horror stuff and the amount of things that happened during that film was crazy! Looking forward to more content bud

Thank you for watching our video. You can tell from our faces how much we loved the whole experience. We too have seen them twice this summer. Last time in the pouring rain but we were six rows from the front! I have never seen anyone give so much joy. A legend and if we can we shall go again. But you will never forget what you have seen and if you can maybe make a playlist of all the songs they performed. Brings it all back. ATB. Steve & Emma.
Hahahah, best one yet
Thanks

Very good. Nice out there.
The more I get into it the more fun walking in the Wye becomes. I had a blast in an area near Mordiford earlier this week. I was able, at long last, to spend some time watching your videos. They are great and very informative. ATB and once again, thank you fort watching.
It's a great spot for a photo. Love the trail there too. Peace. Mark
Looks zen
Yes. One of the best things about solo walking is having yourself as a companion. Thoughts just wash in and out, bit like the ebb and flow of the tide. I like that a lot.
I love the Cambrians - they're gnarly and wild in a lot of places. Featureless so you have to get your micro nav right and hey carry a paper map with you all the time. It looked like you came over the top from Gilfach nature reserve. Had you been walking in that area - even on Gamallt? Well, it's a great part of the Wye Valley. All the vest. Mark
I love the word gnarly Mark! Yes i cam over the top. "I took a wrong turn and just kept going", Bruce Springsteen a line from 'Hungry Heart'. Do you know it? We heard him and band perform it recently up at a very wet Stadium of Light in Sunderland. Brilliant. Gamallt looks wild and remote. lovely. My original plan was just to walk the Wye Valley Way. My plan has changed and broadened. I want to take lots of stuff off the main LDP. Hoping to do this by the end of 2024. i will need to stay up in mid-Wales to do this justice.
@@stevebennett8996 Yeah, it explains things aptly. Not heard the song but sure it is good. Re-Gamallt I never mentioned it was remote - a wrong turn from Gilfach off the Wye Valley walk means a sharp right turn onto Gamallt. Is that what you did? All the best with your plans - sounds exciting.
I agree it's a great stretch of the valley. It's been a while since I've been down that way but I'm feeling the call. Have a great day. Mark
Thanks for watching. I've done three walks now in the area to the north of Chepstow. Easy drive from home near Bristol. Spent some time in these parts during school days but not been back enough in recent years. The Angidy Valley was spell-binding as was walking along parts of Offa's Dyke. I shall revisit both with my currently incapacitated walking buddy. My plan is to do the whole river from source to mouth over the rest of this year. i shall have to stay up in mid-Wales at some point and use it as a hub. My wild camping days are well and truly over. if truth be told they never really started. 🤣
@@stevebennett8996 A pleasure to watch mate. Interesting plans. Yes, the Angidy is a nice little river and valley. As for the Wye it's a fantastic hike - did it in 2020. Have a good one.
