The photo of the young woman @ 0:32 is of Euphemia Toussaint, niece of Pierre Toussaint. Euphemia's mother was Pierre's sister and she died of tuberculosis when Euphemia was young. At the age of 15, Euphemia herself would die of "TB".

grew up in Oakland, CA. Only a handful of whites out there, I was very oppressed, and sufferef at lot of racial injustice. Thankfully, we moved when I was in High School. Have you all thought about moving? If you are so oppressed, there i a lot of counties that will treat you better than this hell hole. Could pay me to go back to oakland! So many racist.

This was very interesting to me. I love the art. I can relate to the food desert idea. Even if you live in a rich white suburb, healthy food can be out of reach if it’s too expensive to buy. Ask a senior living on social security.

It’s because of this attitude and purporting that the White male is the scourge of society that Trump won. The people spoke. Get over it.

Mostly you went to places where Dominicans are and they are mostly blacks. Puerto Rico has arround 300,000 thousand legal and ilegal Dominicans. PR never had many blacks at all. I am a white Puertorrican high middle class ( grandparents from Spain) and I was told since I was a little kid that we all are humans and we all are the same regardless skin color, social class, fisical feasures, etc. Even within our own families we have good and bad people. Skin color does not define a human being, values does. You are a GRINGO if you are from the US regardless. Unfortunately poor people are mostly black or mix. Thats a reality (( sad reality) every where you go in the US as well

First, as I said interpersonally everybody I encountered was super sweet and some even thought I was local because I made a point of taking public transportation. My concern is that is a bit impossible to not have many African descended Puerto Ricans when it is documented that they were enslaved there. And Black people being poor or mixed is the result of the outgrowth of systemic oppression: slavery, discrimination and no attempts at reparations. And I try to stay away from making systemic oppression about good and bad people, rather about systems and solutions. Paz

Thriving while Black You’re entitled to your opinion. If you lived in America as long as I have(50 years)you’d understand. Christianity was forced on the real Black Hebrew Israelite Jews that were captured in West Africa and sold into slavery by the Arabs, Africans and Europeans. If they didn’t accept they killed them. Some of the slaves were from Angola. Son of Mans name would of been Iesus, Yahusha, Yahsua, Yahawashi, there was no letter J. You can read from the 1611 KJV or Septuagint to get a more correct “Word”. Peace Queen
