Great review 🎉
Good work on the review. Just discovered your channel and look forward to more content. Thanks.
Thanks! I’m so glad you found my channel. Excited to share more content soon!
Thanks for the review!
Glad you liked it!
A lovely, thorough, relaxing first impressions review. And you have beautiful writing that looks great on the Manta! I ordered mine on launch day but still waiting for shipping as I’m in the UK.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope your Manta arrives soon-it’s definitely worth the wait. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Does it come standard with this pen or do you pay and chose your pen ?
The device, folio, and pen are sold separately, so you can choose the options that fit your needs best. There are a few pen choices, including the option to just get the refill and make your own pen. If that sounds interesting, here’s a video I made: th-cam.com/video/2zCWn31hvxo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for reviewing the new Manta tablet! The display looks great. One thing that holds me back from e-ink tablets is the inability to scroll the page up while writing. I find it much easier to write when the text stays in the middle of the screen instead of at the bottom. On my iPad, I use the Nebo app with the fountain pen option, and it works really well. I also have a Kindle Scribe, which has the same resolution as the Manta. If you discover a way to enable continuous scrolling while writing on the Manta, please let me know. Thanks again!
Continuous scrolling may be available on Supernote in the future when they release a Linux version. In the meantime, you may want to check out reMarkable which has a continuous pages feature that may be what you're looking for. You can read more about it here: bit.ly/rm_cp.
Nice review, looks like a great device
Thanks! It’s a solid device - really well thought out!
Skipp everything before 10:48, you won't miss a thing
I think I'll go wiht Boox (Note Max) cause I want an A4 sized device, and only god knows when the Supernote A4 X2 will come out :(
I wish I had this review 6 month ago.. So awesome !!!!
Boox Note Air 3c. Just a point of reference for folks. - as a tablet: very interesting and cool - as a reading device: too heavy; far too heavy - as a writing device: fine for notes; terrible for in-depth writing both due to workflow and writing feel. And still too heavy unless writing only at a desk or on your lap. - customer service: they let me return the device without fuss … probably because I had to eat $100 in restocking fees and shipping
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Boox Note Air 3C!
Just because the boox CAN connect to the google play store doesn’t mean you HAVE too. You can use it as a dumb device that only takes notes and reads books
How is it possible to review a tablet that you’ve never used? How can you compare them together if two of them are cardboard
Very informative and helpful. Thanks. I'll wait for a 10"+ Supernote.
Glad it was helpful for you!
I can’t believe I am watching a video about cardboard cutouts.😢
Wow, gave a like for the prototypes!
Thanks so much!
discover how boox won me over supernote - I could buy one. (wanted A5 size). The UI is fine and a bit of learning is needed on all platforms. Still as distraction free as you want - google play just means libby and kindle app for me - I’m not about to install outlook or browse youtube. Did you consider the boox go 10.3 btw?
I considered Boox, but the Supernote was a better fit for me overall. Glad you're happy with your Boox!
I love my boox too, I have it in 2 sizes, tab ultra c pro and page. Both enables me to read on browsers and TUCP allows writing beautifully too.
Is the supernote the only e ink device that has links, header and keyword features for organizational tools?
If you're looking to have all three of those features, Supernote is the only one that offers them natively on their e-ink devices.
Yess, i have the scribe and now the supernote. Le stylet supernote est superieur a tous les autres qui donnent l'impression d'ecrire avec une gomme. Les logiciels manquent, j'aimerai avoir des ronds carres, losanges pour faire des diagrammes dessin tech. Etc. I like a lot my new tablet she don't translate😂and 😂
The Supernote stylus is great! The ability to create shapes is on their roadmap. You can upvote the feature request here: bit.ly/insertshapes. And @pixelleaves recently shared about a workaround where you can copy and paste shapes that was posted on Reddit: bit.ly/shapesworkaround. Hope these help!
Does this refill work on your phone? I use an android. Considering this item if it works on the phone too.
The refill is not compatible with phones. Its ceramic nib is designed to work with the special writing film on Supernote's devices.
Awesome review! I’ve been torn on what to get. Looking like the Supernote
Thanks! Supernote is a great choice!
Wow!!! amazing. Congrats!!!
Appreciate the support! Thanks for watching!
Great video, and thanks for intentionally excluding annoying background music.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Really helpful to see the process before I give it a go. Thanks for the tips!
great video! Do you suggest me to wait for the A5x2 release in Europe, Italy? I suppose it would be the best option for me, as the main usage will be pdf editing and annotations + manga/epub reading, thanks! ps: 10" or bigger would be nice
Glad you enjoyed the video! The A5X2 is expected to be released in October, though it might only be available for pre-order at that time. If you can wait, it sounds like a great choice for your needs! Just keep in mind that you’ll be able to annotate PDFs, but editing them directly on the device isn’t possible. The screen will be 10.7”, and you’ll be able to read ePub books that aren’t DRM-protected.
@@paperthinker annotations on pdfs is all I need! I hope that once I open such pdf again at a later time, every annotation shows up just as before, by saving the file
@@Unclog_my_gamecat_backlog Great! You can definitely annotate PDFs on the Supernote, and your annotations are saved with it. The next time you open the PDF, they'll be right there. :)
@@paperthinker Thanks, so first choice a5x2, followed by the AIpaper viwoods and the boox go 10.3 I assume... One upside of the second one is the option to select 4 different modes to improve the lag when changing pages or zooming in/out on pdfs: such a great software versatility
Cool to hear! Thanks for sharing your choices-you've got some awesome options!
This is clearly sponsored by Supernote or you listen to someone who clearly has no experience with reMarkable and Books...
Thanks for your comment! When I first learned about e-ink tablets, I was really excited about the possibilities and spent a lot of time researching which one would best meet my needs. I wanted to help others in a similar situation by sharing what I’d learned. My research led me to choose Supernote, but I’m sure reMarkable and Boox are also great options depending on your needs. Just to clarify, this video isn’t sponsored.
On being distraction-free: how is having *email* on an e-ink tablet helping with getting rid of distractions? Also, I don't understand how "having to connect the device once in a while to wifi" (as you do yourself) to update it should be considered a minus on being distraction-free. Makes no sense to me. The remarkable 100% checks the box of being able to be used offline (which again has nothing to do with being distraction-free). Overall a comparison of a device you own and use to devices you don't own or use and relying on reddit is pretty biased. Next time maybe focus on the device you actually know.
Thanks for your comment! Since I prefer a distraction-free device, I haven’t used the email feature on the Supernote. I generally stay connected on my other devices, so I like to keep my Supernote mostly offline. Being disconnected helps me mentally-it’s like an “out of sight, out of mind” approach. So, needing to connect for software updates feels a bit counter to that. This is just my personal preference, and I shared it in the video to help others clarify what’s important to them in an e-ink tablet. Some people might not mind connecting or may even prefer it, and that’s totally fine-we all have different needs. I also have nothing against the reMarkable; as I mentioned in another comment, it can be a great choice. For my research, I used multiple sources, including Reddit, which helped illustrate some of the points, but it definitely wasn’t my only source. I appreciate your feedback!
Should schools only allow this kind of gadget and ban the others.
That’s an interesting question! I think it really depends on the needs of the students and the educational goals because each device has its strengths.
Can you use a bluethoot keyboard with the supernote ?
Yes, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard with the Supernote, but it’s not fully optimized for this purpose. While I don’t usually use a keyboard with my Supernote, I know you can type Word documents and enter search queries, though there is a slight lag and keyboard shortcuts aren’t supported. Hope this helps!
You did not mention that Supernote can have hyperlinks in the notes. You can jump from one note to another easily. It makes it like your own private internet that is not connected to the Internet. You can connect all your related information together so you can find things very easily.
Supernote has a lot of amazing features. I couldn’t cover them all in this video, but I appreciate you chiming in on the feature you find particularly useful - thanks for sharing!
Why is an online update negative for you? You update the device once and then it's done. This is a "negative" point constructed by you.
Thanks for your comment! Since updates are released every few months, regular connections would be needed to stay up-to-date. Personally, I prefer a device that offers the option to update offline without the need for workarounds. I appreciate your perspective!
Great review! Love your models! And I really love your tangible ✅ and ❌. Informative and hit a lot of points that are valuable to me as well.
I’m really happy you found it helpful!
I was considering a Supernote A5X2. But it still doesn't exist. And even if it did, the Supernote EU store has inexplicable and completely unreasonable markups (50-67%) over the US store. Between the insane price markups and the fact that they discontinued the A5X before the A5X2 is available, I'll be getting the Boox Go 10.3.
Yeah, the delays with the A5X2 have been disappointing for many people. I’ve heard from others who contacted Supernote that the A5X2 is expected to come out in September/October 2024. It’s a shame that the A5X hasn’t been available lately. From what I’ve heard through people not affiliated with Supernote (so take with a grain of salt), a key component for the A5X was discontinued, which led to the out of stock issues and likely affected the A5X2 release. Sorry to hear about the mark-ups in the EU store. It may be related to Supernote being a smaller company, but it’s definitely frustrating for customers. I hope you enjoy your Boox!
How can you review products you've never used? This is a completely biased review for the note device you bought.
I hear what you’re saying. Since it wasn’t possible for me to try all three products before buying, I spent a lot of time researching the features, reading product reviews, and reviewing user experiences to make an informed decision. My goal with this video is to share what I learned in hopes that it will help others find the best option for their needs. Thanks for your comment!
Don't buy anything at Good e-Reader Store. They're thieves. I paid for a Boox Go 10.3 and they haven't sent it to me -ORDER 4162-. I write them emails and no one answers me. I've been scammed. They kept my money and they didn't send me the product or send it to me. Thieves. Good e-Reader Store SCAM!! THEY HAVE BLOCKED ME IN THEIR FORUMS THAT'S WHY I PUBLISH IT HERE, SO THEY CAN'T DECEIVE ANYONE ELSE.
Thak you!!! I am about to buy my e-ink notebook and I was just considering remarkable vs Ipad pro, but now, I am seduced by supernote. Thnk you for this video!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad it was helpful. Good luck with your decision!
Or you can also use and old empty refill tube and don't mess up three nice pens, it's not only you'll save in paper and trees by using a e ink gadjet, you also save plastic and reduce contamination by not wasting more pens. just saying. have a nice one. i love your channel, it's helpful dicide what gadjet I'll buy.
I’m all for re-using what you have on hand! I didn’t have a compatible pen body for the Supernote refill, but if you do, that’s a great idea. Thanks so much for your kind words about the channel!
I'm not sure why an app store (boox) is equated to distraction? To me the distraction is the Internet in general, but all these devices connect online, so it's weird how the app store is seen as a negative when it's more positive than negative. More software choice is a huge feature, not a distraction. I guess the temptations are significant, and I'm not appreciating the self-awareness of this reviewer's perspective. But the limiting factor is the eink simply doesn't work as a general purpose device, which makes it special purpose.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! My goal was to share the factors that were important to me in an e-ink device in the hopes it helps others clarify what features matter most to them. An App Store, with all its wonderful possibilities, would be a distraction for me. Perhaps it would not be distracting for you. If that’s the case, Boox might be great fit if you were looking for an e-ink tablet. E-ink devices are indeed niche, and while this might seem like a limitation to some, others might be drawn to their unique strengths. It’s great that you know you want a general-purpose device!
What are your thoughts on the new Remarkable Paper Pro?
There are lots of things that are very exciting about the reMarkable Paper Pro, particularly the color display and larger screen. Many people have said the writing experience on the reMarkable is very good and it looks like they’ve made it even better. And some people will be very happy to know that the reMarkable now comes with a reading light. Some things to consider along with those wonderful pros: Portability: The larger screen makes the device bigger and heavier. Weighing 1.16 lbs (525g), it may be less portable for some when compared to other e-ink devices on the market. Color Display: To show color, the screen refreshes the areas where color is used. It’s possible that the refreshing may be distracting though anecdotally, people have said they quickly got used to it. I’ve also heard the writing experience is great in grayscale, but a little slower when writing with color. This may be due to the screen refreshing. Since I haven’t tried the device myself, this is based on what I’ve heard anecdotally. Cost: The cool features come with a higher price tag. Additionally, the writing nibs will need to be replaced over time so it’s worth considering the ongoing costs. Overall, the device looks well-designed and you could give it a try with their 100 day risk-free trial to see if it meets your needs.
Cab you compare to the paper pro?
Sure! The reMarkable Paper Pro is very exciting with its color display and larger screen. For the factors I compared previously, the marks for reMarkable likely still apply. While they’ve introduced new features, it’s not clear if they have made any changes on the things I looked for out-of-the-box such as the ability to update software offline or add templates without needing to implement hacks or install third-party software. It does look like it’s built well and would be a great device for note-taking. Here are some additional factors worth considering with the new model: Portability: The larger screen makes the device bigger and heavier.

Is there any eInk tablet on which I can use any mindmap app which have a functionality of Handwriting to Text transformation and colour featurs like Onyx Boox Ultra C ?
I'm not aware of an e-ink tablet having a dedicated mind mapping app, but there could be one out there. If you find one, I'd be interested in hearing about it!
No backlight, no deal.
It's great that you know what you want. You might want to check out Boox devices, as many of their models come with a front light.
A question from @flabbybum9562 about taking notes in ePub books got lost when I re-uploaded this video with the audio fixed. Posting their comment and my reply for those wondering the same thing: "It's hard to get the Supernote here in the UK. I want to be able to read books from Everand, and write my own notes in. The Remarkable lets you put in notes right after the page of the book, which I think sounds great. But I've not been able to find if the Supernote does this too." And my reply: I ordered my Supernote directly from their website, and the good news is they also ship to the UK. If the books you’re reading are in the Open ePub format, Supernote can open them, and you’ll be able to take notes directly on the page. However, if the ePub is DRM-protected, the Supernote won’t be able to open it.
Use calibre to dedrm books for private use
Isn't it kind of silly to compare them when you only have the physical version of one? Was an interesting and well laid out video nonetheless.
I understand how it might seem a bit unconventional. I thought it would be a fun way to present my research on the three e-ink devices. I'm glad you still found it interesting!
Audio sounds great!
Woooooooo audio is back. Hell yeah!
You are wrong about reMarkable not being a distraction-free device. You only need to connect for the initial software update, but then you can use it to your heart's content and not be bothered by any notifications from any 3rd party apps or emails. reMarkable is completely de-Googled and does not run a modified Android OS. So, the reMarkable is the epitome of a distraction-free tablet. And, do I need to mention battery life and boot-up times?
Thanks for your comment. I agree that the reMarkable can be used in a distraction-free way. For those who want to use it this way right out of the box, it’s a bit more challenging since reMarkable requires an internet connection to stay current with the software updates released every few months. If that’s not a concern, I can see the reMarkable being a great choice. I’m glad you’re happy with yours!
@@paperthinker How do you update the software without internet/pc connection? Giving a downvote because of constant software updates is bit harsh. The device don't even have applications or notifications.
Supernote can install a software update via a USB drive. An internet connection is needed to download the update either directly onto the USB drive or transferred to the USB if downloaded to the computer. I understand your point. For those who don’t mind connecting to Wi-Fi to update their device, the reMarkable can be a great choice. Personally, I preferred a device that offers the option to update offline. While there are workarounds for the reMarkable, not everyone may be comfortable with them. My rating reflects how the devices perform out-of-the-box.
@@paperthinker fair enough.
@@paperthinker Right, because having to download an update to a USB drive and then connect that to your e-ink tablet is a more distraction-free way to update it than it doing it on its own when connected to wifi...
