Restoration & Trial Run of 1914 Guards Van - 457ZL
The volunteers of the Mornington Railway Preservation Society Inc. have completed a 2 year restoration of 1914 Guards Van 457ZL.
Saturday 8th of September 2024 saw the successful trial run of 457ZL.
Formally known as 20ZB, the van has undergone a 2 year restoration which saw over a quarter of the timber frame replaced, the roof fully re-canvassed and a wheelset swap take place.
This was a massive effort, and it has come up great. This a testament to the hard work put in by our dedicated volunteers!
457ZL will be returning to regular service shortly on our excursion trains.

Weighbridge - Keep K163 Going update
มุมมอง 1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
With the mechanical overhaul of Mornington Railway's K163 nearing completion, it was time to verify the locomotive wheel/axle loading. This is required as part of the rail worthy certification process. Fortunately the Newport workshops is one of the only locations in Australia with it’s 1912 heritage listed locomotive weight-bridge remaining fully operational. We see the volunteers working alon...

With works on the overhaul of K163 nearing completion, we take a little look at one of the initially unexpected tasks our Volunteers had recently completed. This being the entire repaint of the locomotive. This task started as some touch ups to the tender after holes had been discovered in the outer walls of the water space. Whilst the team waited for some of the other components to return from...
The beginnings of the Mornington Railway Preservation Society
มุมมอง 4.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) was formed by a public meeting in 1984. The objective was to save the Mornington line, which was being threatened with closure. The MRPS purchased K163 from the Apex club of Frankston and set about restoring the locomotive for mainline operation. K163 was restored and in 1986 was issued with a boiler certificate while in Jubilee Park, Frankston...

Drone footage of K163 on a misty morning
Great stuff
If I didn’t know any better I would have thought it was a caboose 😎……yes I’m across the pond……fantastic job fellas 👍
A very empty beer keg
Awesome work !!!
Fair dinkum guys.
Nice to see it is a 6 wheeler
Well done guys. Great work.
Thats turned out well!
Looks great. I love to see the old rolling stock restored. You’ve got to lift the track in that station a bit, your doors aren’t going to appreciate scraping across the ground.
Looks good. Has the loading gauge changed over the years? I noticed the doors were stuck on the platform coping.
That's just because the platform is non original and was built on a 40 mph curve, maybe a even a low door
Looks absolutely fantastic 👌
The one thing you notice about ZL's is how well they ride on rough track. Well designed for Victorian branch lines.
Great video! ❤
Going no where fast.
Great footage of Helsby, he was a character and a half, lucky to have spent more than a few hours on the footplate of various locos with him back in the 90's/early 00's, great times that i will never forget.
dang you guys now have 163 subscribers
Fantastic history, thank you.
Interesting, but please ditch that music.
I’m so happy the K163 returned home
Fantastic video 😃⤴️⤴️
Yay!’
Very cool
What an awesome achievement. Well done to everyone involved.
Fantastic video!
Hi there I’ve walked the whole tracks from mornington to moorooduc and I was wondering if you could give me a tour around all the trains
go to the school and see it go by all the time it's really good
Funny seeing the guys pull out the Electric staff to unlock the points at Long Island Junction, I'm about to bring a steel train out of there with the click of a mouse. Great footage of the first few runs. Good to see Len May out there and the late Bill Webb. My father would sometimes be the guard on the DRC along with Bill driving.
Nice
Thoroughly enjoyed this! When I attended Mornington State School between 1950 and 1956, the weekly train from Frankston would go by the bottom of the school yard every Wednesday. If it wasn’t K 163 it was one very like her - of course in all black livery in those days. ( Can anyone confirm this - or set me straight?). All the kids would hang over the fence and wave to the crew…. Good times!
It might have been another K. 163 used to work around the Wangaratta area but I could be wrong.
Welcome back k163
Loved seeing it on the open day, the detailing on the front was cool.
It was cool to see it today at the open days!
So good to see this. We lived close to Jubilee Park in Frankston where K163 was a playground feature for many years and as a child I (along with probably thousands of others) climbed all over every part of it.
I could hear this from newport station
Wow stunning!
Such a beautiful job, well done and thank you to all the wonderful people involved!
DID K163 GET A NEW PANT JOB??!!!

Fantastic milestone hope to see it at the open day this year.
Great Video Guys! Cant wait to see her back and running again
Fantastic paint job guys. How long before it goes back to Mornington hauling tourist trains?
It started steaming today, after the open days.
She's beautiful 😍
Verypretty scenery, nice to see K163 from a different view
Brilliant fottage it will be nice when K163's overhaul is complete and is back running trains on the Mornington railway branchline.
Sensational footage! Thankyou for sharing. Is there any footage of the T class transfers ?
