    Nice example of controlled/smart greenhouse. YT threw it out to me presumably as I’ve been on the same journey now about to head into my third year. Similar challenges, humidity in the shoulder months is tough to control unless you’re going to utilise energy hungry solutions such as air exchange with dehumidification. My biggest challenge has been cooling and like you have found the addition of shade netting this year has been effective. Next year I may add a swamp cooling setup utilising geothermal stable temps. I have winter to think about it. I have met my own targets to keep plants alive and growing until the lack of light becomes a problem without needing any active heating. Anyway you can see the videos on our channel, all the best.

    So interesting thank you! How much do you have to use the heater?

    • @myclevergarden
      @myclevergarden 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! I run it very little unless it gets very cold with a wind chill factor. TL;DR The heater turns on only when it dips below 10-3C/50-38F depending on how I have it set. At 5C it hardly runs until we get a prolonged cold snap. That happened in February when it hit -34C/-30F! So the setting, and how often it runs, depends on what I'm trying to grow and when. For me it does not seem worth it to heat it much when we have very little light. If I add supplemental lights I'll have to rethink that perhaps.

    Excellent set up! I'm growing indoors for the winter here in the Ozarks, if I stay in this area next year I think I'm gonna build a greenhouse that's dug down about 4ft into the ground and comes up about 6ft above ground for the structure. Keep on keeping on man! 😊

      Thanks! That's a fantastic idea. I wonder if by fully insulating the North wall, no windows, and using some type of GHAT you could hear and cool it year round only using fans?

      @myclevergarden I built up a long mound on the north side of the garden stuffed full of potatoes as a northern windbreak and then added an extra 4" of dry straw on top of the herbs and they continued growing outside till November, not bad for some subtropical plants lol

      I was happy to see this post because I am in my third year of growing a Meyer Lemon, a Key Lime and a Grapefruit tree and have not been successful in getting fully developed fruits. I have just brought my trees back in the house for the winter. I live in western New York between Buffalo and Rochester. I was just wondering how confused these trees are having experienced the shortened days of sunlight then coming indoors to warmer temperatures and longer light exposure with my grow lamp. The previous years I have had several fruits but they eventually drop off. This year however I have one GIANT lemon which has been developing for months and is now bright yellow but still doesn't have a strong aroma (which I have been advised is the sign of a fully ripened fruit). I am hoping to see what you know about how to handle this in-and-out of doors to manage our seasonal changes up here in the north. Hopefully you have some knowledge to share and will have subscribers who will chime in with their experience.

      @@barbaraelsenbeck.fnp-c If the tree flowers when pollinators are not around, you will need to hand pollinate the flowers. You can use a soft artist brush. I used one of my wife's eye brushes. Also, if they spend a lot of time indoors, having a fan blow over them or shaking the branches will help strengthen them.

    • @myclevergarden
      @myclevergarden 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jerrybessetteDIY that's exactly what I have experienced with all "self pollinators" in my greenhouse as well. What I do though is utilize airflow so I am wondering if this will work for citrus as well? I have fans in the greenhouse to move the plants and circulate so tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and others are able to bear fruit when everything is sealed up.

    • @myclevergarden
      @myclevergarden 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@barbaraelsenbeck.fnp-c in addition to @jerrybessetteDIY fantastic knowledge and suggestions, I wanted to address the light concern. Based on my research I would venture to guess it has more to do with pollination but light is so important! Here is what I have experienced with light up North versus my previous gardening experience in zone 9 in the deep South. Up North we actually have much longer days during our summer months typically than down South. An example would be I had to grow short-day onions down South and here in Chicago must grow long-day. To your point and excellent question this means the light delta is greater I think up North. So using some supplemental light may be necessary depending on several factors including if you are able to give it Southern exposure indoors. The exposure plays a huge role and is why the orientation of a greenhouse is critical. For example my greenhouse is 15 degrees off from South to maximize every bit of light possible during the winter months where not only are the daylight lengths extremely contracted but the angle changes dramatically. So here is my opinion based only what I know so far, I think it would be helpful to measure your light to see if you are getting enough light with or without supplemental lighting. Just to rule out the off-chance it is either getting too much or not enough. In my research, not enough experience yet, they grow them successfully in greenhouses with 6-8 hours of light. My guess is that your tree is getting plenty of light and just needs a little help pollinating fully. Let us know how it goes!

      @@myclevergarden I live in Plano, TX where we get a lot of 100-degree days. I have four adult plants; 3 I started from cuttings of the original, and another 3 babies I am trying to grow. After reading your posts, I looked at my almost ripe fruit and noticed I have some branches loaded with fruit and some with none. I'm thinking it has to do with the amount of light they received. It's hard for indoor light to match outdoor sun.

    Awesome garden! I grow a lot of edibles, too. Are those birdie beds? I just got some this year and love the tall ones! I love your greenhouse set up! What kind of greenhouse is it? I'd also like to know what variety of carrots those were than you pulled up! I like the Napoli carrots from High Mowing since they are early maturing but those looked awesome!

    • @myclevergarden
      @myclevergarden 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much! They sure are Birdies. I really like the tall ones. In my past gardens I only had the shorter ones and really liked them but wanted to try ones you could just stand at. I really like these and they have made it easier to share with older people. I love carrots and the Napoli too. The one in that shot was a standard Danvers 126. They tend to grow wide, straight, and with a sharp taper. My favorite part about these is I only thin once and then let nature do its thing. They don't seem to mind being crowded for awhile as long as I pull some of the shorter ones growing too close and eat those first. I really like the Little Finger variety as well. They grow like wide fingers about 4-6" long so are easier for prep.

      The Greenhouse is a kit purchased through Ceres called SunGlo. If you're interested I'll do an in-depth episode on mine and what I've learned along the way. Let me know!
