Isn´t it boring how much interesting music there is in the World?
I suggest we stick to boring music. Try it at home. Play something. It's fun.

Baroque for Sparrows 2 (piano improvisation)
Sparrows are brown, bouncing and beautiful. And endangered.
There is scientific evidence that they are all from the Baroque period. 🐦
This piano improvisation is inspired by their lively, bouncing nature. It continues from the first part, capturing the same energy as these little birds.
Watch part 1 and listen to this baroque-style improvisation on an upright piano.

Encore. _"There are over 600 million fewer birds in Europe than there were 40 years ago. While the decline is levelling off, some of the continent's most-recognisable birds are among the worst affected, with house sparrow (passer domesticus) populations declining by half. -- Europe has lost almost a fifth of its birds since 1980 as habitat destruction has wiped out the animals' homes. The shocking finding was made in a study led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), who analysed population estimates for 378 species across the continent. Some of Europe's most common birds were the worst hit, with the house sparrow losing 247 million individuals alone."_ [source: Natural History Museum UK; 2021]
Sunkenindeaf, this is so surprising and horrible. I love sparrows. It seams that they are everywhere, and still, they are endangered! 😢
Absolutely shocking 😭 the little birds really seem to have disappeared since my childhood. I also read the novel The History of Bees written by Maja Lunde. It examines the phenomenon in different centuries and also presents a dark dystopia of the World without bees.

Why are you sitting like this
@ceynepcabiroglu this is a good question. Honestly, I don't know. Maybe performing improvisation in public makes me so nervous that I sit in a funny position to relieve my tension.
Guitar players have their own dramatic posing style (except Robert Fripp... and some). So why not. I like the music on the output...
To me, predominantly after 1:40, the feeling gets quite close to Vince Guaraldi's popular theme titled "Linus and Lucy" from the animated films of Peanuts. That might count as part of the "fusion jazz" influence, perhaps, that you have mentioned in the description. I'm lost with Ukko Nooa. Masculine name with feminine pronouns (she/her) --is it about the confusing aspect of contemporary gender politics, or, a cross-dressing character like early Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne"?
Hello sunkenindeaf, YT discarded my comment before, maybe because there was a link in it.. "Ukko Nooa" (Old man Noah) is a finnish childrens song, very known in Finland. The original is a swedish dringing song Gubben Noak.
@sunkenindeaf thank you for this in-depth analysis! I listened to Linus and Lucy and yes, I've probably been influenced by it (and everything mainstream). This turned out to be a cute song. I hesitated to publish it because it's so boring even by my own standards. However, life is often boring. Except when she´s wearing a bra. Thank you also @ruhjee for your clarification regarding Old man Noah!
I just realized what sunkenindeaf meant 😆
@@ruhjee13717 Thank you. ^_^ I was thinking about asking once more (out of curiosity, why he becomes she), but did not wish to appear as grammar police.
I started this improvisation with the intention of playing something based on the Ukko Nooa theme. But when I began, my mind started thinking about her in a bra. And that's where this surprisingly beautiful theme came from. This one´s unnecessarily long but you know, I can't stop staring at her when she's wearing a bra. I hope you understand and yes you do. This improv contains clumsy influences from classical and fusion jazz. Please let me know what you think of them, or if you can't get any thoughts about them. Or just let me know what you think about bras.
so much fun to be in the digital audience for this. made me think of telemann
@john-nk3ej humble bow to you! Telemann caresses my mind, defragments my hard drive. Your comment made me smile!
Still amazing!
@swordshreader thank you very much! I appreciate you listening to it. Next time with better luck without interruptions.
What a beautiful mood you've set! Of course all sparrows are from Baroque period, @donleino's harmonical finess fits this musical moment accurately. The abrupt stop is what i find fitting for this moment the most - for sparrows bouncing on asphalt, as elegant and baroque as they are, are still subject to incoming human vehicles (which i dont find baroque at all) so all hopping has to stop and sparrows are coerced into escape maneuver - hence the stop. Its a real shame - back in baroque period sparrows weren't subjects to incoming human vehicles, and so the piano imporovisations had much higher success rate at finishing than they do today. But there was no asphalt back then, so perhaps they hopped on something else, so who knows 🤷. What I wonder is, once the human vehicles come to halt (perhaps humans as well), and the asphalt persists, perhaps they will be free to bounce uninterrupted?
@dedikandrej thanks for your wise thoughts. I think these are important questions. In general, the sparrowness is surprisingly important. Mankind is coming to an end and the sparrowkind will go on from there. Cars stop forever, only chirp can be heard. Ocean liners rust in ports, whales sing again. I worked for many years as a librarian in a small town where I travelled daily by local train (there are not enough jobs for musicians in Finland). Once, the train stopped shortly after leaving Helsinki station. The driver of the train announced that there´s a swan is on the tracks, we will continue our journey as soon as it moves. Hopefully, a sparrow on the tracks will also stop the train.

@ruhjee thanks, some more to come! I love practicing this, it's surprisingly complicated 😅
Glory to the improviser. The memories come in waves. Thank you. (For some reason, TH-cam has automatically deleted what I've typed here. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, kept the message short this time. I'll see if I can _edit in_ the rest.) As regards “rough mental space”… The scene in the film where Harri (the late Matti Pellonpää) waits for Zombie (Silu Seppälä) to turn up at the tavern in Istanbul, there’s a Turkish song performed by frequenters -probably suggested by the filmmaker’s local collaborators. The chorus goes like this: _”(Diyorum, sebep ne bu ızdıraba?) Diyorlar, kül olmaz ateş yanmadan. Denizler durulmaz dalgalanmadan.”_ --- _”(Why all this agony, I ask.) There is no ash, they say, without a fire burning. The seas will not settle down, before they become rough.”_ For those who have not heard, the humble masterpiece in question is titled “Zombie ja Kummitusjuna”. Directed by Mika Kaurismäki, released in 1991. All safe, all well.
Thank you so much for your comment and also for your inspiration! I had fun diving deep into the depths of solitude. Thank you also for educating me with the wisdom of your own culture. I love Matti Pellonpää's acting. He lived homeless for long periods of time and had directed his letter mail to restaurant Kosmos in Helsinki. One of the best films (IMO) in which he plays along is Shadows in Paradise. Another incredible film is Calamari Union, a surreal shoot, the only one made by Aki Kaurismäki while completely drunk. All safe, all well.
@@boringpianoimprovisation I dare say that films of Aki Kaurismäki have been transcribed into my genes by now. Films so pure, truly unique in every aspect --clockwork rhythm, precise layout, dark humour, subtle kindness, saturated colours. To me, his "lousy films" (his own words) are on par with works of his spiritual masters, Yasujiro Ozu and Robert Bresson. The late Pellonpää surely holds a special place, as do all members of the _family_ --Outinen, Kuosmanen, Nikkari, Peltola, Hyytiäinen, Väänänen... How about the delightful music, carefully selected for each film --folk songs, tango, rock and roll. I just get carried away.

I still love this impro. And I really like the chain of inspiration between you guys!
Some days one needs to find refuge for his soul, relinquish unwanted feelings suppressed for way too long. To be unencumbered just for a moment's piece. From amongst all instruments, piano is by far the most indulgent in these emotions. It savors solitude and makes it that much more pleasing.
@dedikandrej exactly. Thank you for the poetry, admittedly well put into words. When I was young, I took escapism so far that I didn't go for coffee every now and then, but ate caffeine pills so I could play the upright piano without interruption. It was sick :D Nowadays I do the opposite: I only go for coffee, I don't do much else.

Recorder and tambourine in medieval arrangement, perhaps. Otherwise, my shrunken brain hears Bizet in this : L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2 - IV. Farandole, second theme. Took me a while to remember Bizet's work. Running after rolling marbles, bumped into these two : 1) Borodin, Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor. 2) Stravinsky, Petrushka - Russian dance from Tableau I.
Wow, very impressive! My Hungarian friend also hears echoes of Béla Bartók here. I listened to Borodin´s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, you're right - that's exactly what I may have been trying to achieve with my playing :D I like Stravinsky's Petruška, it's great if it has gotten a particle of dust in my lungs sometime, coming out of the ballerina's slippers. Thanks for listening to this, Sunkenindeaf!
yeah, loved those slight modulations towards the end. also loved the yeah at the end. I find idea of sparrows bopping on asphalt very inspiring - and in soul of DonLeino's and your soundscape. Definittely would listen to improvisation about sparrows bouncing on asphalt 👍
@dedikandrej I just love this theme already! The bouncing could sound sharp-clawed, brown and rhythmic. If all these elements are missing from the music, it is the first sparrow aboard the International Space Station, in its soft, white spacesuit. Thank you for developing this idea further!
@dedikandrej ..and thanks for listening to the accidental modulations! I appreciate it!
I’m exploring medieval vibes inspired by DonLeino´s recent videos, but I’m also ready to take suggestions-like @sunkenindeaf 's great idea to improvise on music from a Mika Kaurismäki movie. Let me know if you have any other ideas!
How about a series of improvisations based on everyday sounds, such as sparrows chirping, a bus door closing, or any other noises you hear on your way to the studio?
@@ruhjee13717 great idea! I should definitely expand my musical motives beyond this room. For example, there are sparrows in the world. They are now endangered. I could write more about them, but I'd rather go and watch them bounce on the asphalt.
🧙
Though I have used the "suggest a style" token once, if there's no other nominee, I am not ashamed to take a second shot. Rather long shot: Have you seen "Zombie ja Kummitusjuna", the 1991 film directed by Mika Kaurismäki? (Naturally, Aki Kaurismäki's work stands out, but one should take notice of the older brother too.) I've seen it first at the time of release, in my early teens, and clearly remember the melancholy sensation. What makes it dearer to me is that the final quarter is set in Istanbul, my hometown. Anyway, if it would tickle your curiosity for an improvisation, the film is based on a Black Sabbath song from 1971. No drums, but with bass, guitar, flute; almost waltz, titled "Solitude". All safe, all well.
Thanks for your suggestion Sunkenindeaf! It's nice to have a special request. I'm pretty busy right now, but I'm definitely going to listen to Solitude in the fall and take inspiration from it. I haven't been able to visit Istanbul yet. I´ve read about Constantinople and the amazing history of the whole city. At the moment I am reading Mika Waltari's novel Dark Angel which tells about the Ottoman siege 1453. Mika Waltari has better novels than that but it's always a pleasure to read about Istanbul! I'm a big fan of Aki and Mika Kaurismäki. Just like you wrote, Mika is also a brilliant director who has been overshadowed by his brother. Thanks for your comment! For some reason, the music we hear when we are young will remain meaningful for the rest of our lives. I will return to Solitude during this autumn!

Once a year, the authorities demolished it because it was built without permission. It was always rebuilt. This on-off-game went on for a couple of decades.
