As I understand, liminal spaces trigger Brodmann areas 23 and 24 and the "error center" in Cingulate Gyrus, which are responsible for orientation in surrounding space, walking, searching, recognising places and buildings and Also Feeling Lost. At the age of about 20 this area was overdeveloped in me, I loved architecture, orienting around streets, maybe it's peak is age 20 approx. To the back of these areas are more old Broadmann areas 31 and 29, responsible for the feeling of Self. To the front of them are the newer areas 25, 32, 33, responsible for first bad, second good emotions processing (that's why we eagerly remember bad stuff, rarely good in recent history) and in the midway is the "error center", which gives you a feeling you left your kettle on fire when you left home. The liminal spaces centre is close and partially mixed with the "error center"(Brodmann area 24), that's why it gives you eerieness. It's function is to make you go away from a strange area or explore it more, if you are "curious"
