Stellenberg Gardens

The Cape Dutch homestead known as Stellenberg has played many roles during its long and interesting history - farm dwelling, manor house, country retreat, patrician residence, provincial heritage site and much-loved family home.
Over 65 years later, Stellenberg remains in superlative condition. Indeed it has been described by historians and architects as one of the most beautiful Cape Dutch houses in the Cape Peninsula, with its balanced design, classical decoration, its wide welcoming portal and renowned gardens.
Situated at the crossroads of what were once four oak lined avenues in upper Kenilworth and surrounded by enchanting gardens and mature trees, Stellenberg is the last example of its kind in the central southern suburbs. Simon van der Stel originally granted an estate of 57 morgen to Jacob Vogel in 1697 but it was almost immediately transferred to his youngest son, Frans van der Stel on extremely favourable terms.

Stellenberg Gardens Virtual Tour
Since 2015, Stellenberg Gardens in Cape Town has held Open Weekends in aid of St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children, a paediatric care facility giving children with life threatening illness a second chance at childhood.
Due to COVID, we’ve not been able to share the beauty that our gardens have to offer nor raise funds for St Joseph’s Home. Like many charities, COVID-19 has negatively impacted the operations at St Joseph’s who rely on donations to provide free 24-hour specialised and general nursing care and rehabilitation to those who need it most.
That is why we are so excited to present our virtual garden tour! We’re proud to give you the opportunity to take a trip with us through one of South Africa’s most beautiful gardens, from the comfort of your own home, and bring everyone together virtually to make a difference for this worthy cause.

I was fortunate enough to meet Doreen who walked me through the garden when the house was closed. I traveled 11000km just to see this, crazy yes but when you want quality information you have to see how it works and why. I made a promise to her that her time would not be wasted. Since visiting I have excelled in the Horticultural industry and am now a presenter on TV and also write for a magazine. All of this because of the passion and generosity of the whole team. Your inspiration continues to inspire me.
