Great classical piano performances
Samuel Barber: Sonata For Piano Op. 26 - Lilia Boyadjieva, piano
Samuel Barber: SONATA FOR PIANO, OP. 26 (1949)
Excerpt from piano recital 'Samuel Barber: The Piano Works' by Paris-based pianist Lilia Boyadjieva.
Recorded live in the John Field Room of the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland on 12th March 2010.
Part of Nóta's Barber 2010 Centenary celebrations.
"Though not revolutionary in its formal structure, the sonata is a monumental masterpiece of its time. Its strength lies in the alliance between long sweeping melodic ideas that are distinctive to Barber's musical imprint and the modern harmonic language and structural techniques that are idiomatic to the eclectic musical style of the twentieth century."
"About the sonata, the French composer Francis Poulenc wrote:
The [sonata] pleases me without reserve. It is a remarkable work from both the musical and instrumental point of view, In turn, tragical, joyous and songful, it ends up with a fantastically difficult to play fugue. This is a long way from the sad and scholastic fugues of Hindemith pupils. . . . Bursting with energy, this finale knocks you out ('Vous-met knock-out') in (something less than ) five minutes.
- Excerpt from Poulenc's diary of his American tour, quoted in La Table ronde, June 1950, trans. Barber)."

Wonderful playing from a true artist
I had the pleasure of attending a concert by this marvellous pianist last night, and he played this very pretty nocturne as an encore
Absolutely crushed it. What a piece. What a player. I am lucky to be alive.
It was Jonathan who introduced me to this piece when he played it as an encore at a recital he gave in Cambridge recently. I asked him what it was and where I could get the score and am now working on it ... As others have said, J plays it with great beauty and control; one has the sense that he is truly feeling the music rather than performing it (as Hough does, though admittedly he was a mere boy in 1988!), and its stylistic affinity to Grieg is strongly audible here - though even Grieg wrote nothing more beguiling than this. Fabulous. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful playing, as always from Maestro Plowright!
Fantastic !!
beautiful poetry again on the piano by wonderful jonathan plowright
so is it the second or the third part?!
wonderful!!
How could this be any more beautiful?
Isn't it a bit too slow??
Sublime, beyond description. The last part makes you hold your breath. It's hard to believe human beings are capable of such things. Thank you so much for posting this!
I totally agree with some other opinions here: This playing is really a very beautiful and coloured version. To me, Plowright has felt the right tempo and intention of this wonderful nocturne. Most of the published recordings seem too fast to me, so this one here is quite good.
잔잔하면서도 발랄하고 듣기 편안하당 좋아용!!
i have the orchestre and the piano Version , magnificent art and a absolute plasure for my ears and mind.
I much prefer the Bauer transcription... This sounds like Bach on Valium...
Just wonderful controlled playing. Great tone.
Stephen Baysted brought me here
Hyperion is my favourite recording label! Thank you for this transcription! It is usually sung by nasty voices, so the enjoyment is found here.
I usually resent anyone who isn't Horowitz or Richter playing this, but I have to admit Plowright is wonderful. Thanks!
Let's just agree to disagree
compared to schubert this doesnt seem so good to me ...
The Promenade at the beginning is at a little faster pace than I am used to.
THIS IS NOW AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD FROM ITUNES & AMAZON
@chooleeguns Mike Spring at Hyperion Records will be able to tell you where the sheet music was sourced for JP's recording in 2010.
How did you find this? I can't find it anywhere, even in the UK...
@maxbigazzi are you kidding? it's the perfect tempo for the piano..
@GeorgiosZaimis IThe score is in "Bach Collection Transcriptions", by Schirmer, still available. The score is a beauty, I agree. But I prefer the rendition by Angela Hewitt, at a quicker tempo.
sehr sehr schön, weil es langsam gespielt wird.
@pianodoir Thanks!
@GeorgiosZaimis Information on where to find score may be available via Hyperion Records in UK (JP recorded it on Hyperion label)
@OriginalArtisan I know what "transient" means. But what does transient expression mean? Do you mean "Music?" I suppose music is transient. But if recorded, as here, it seems to go on. Yes?
Does anyone know how to find these transpositions by George Herbert Fryer?
@EendjeKwak oh c'mon,ravel did something a bit different. it's a big tent,now!
A gorgeous piece, at whatever speed, I think!
too fast but gorgeous!
@injaqenwetrust Gramophone magazine has called Jonathan Plowright "one of the finest living pianists". He has recorded 9 CDs on the Hyperion label - mainly lesser known works of the Romantic period, e.g. by Polish composers. Deserves to be known more widely. A London Prom is overdue!
to play with this beauty at such a slow speed (4:32 compared with say Hough at 3:54) takes a lot of control and skill
Absolutely Amazing transcription AND performance. That's what we are living for. Thank you Bach, thank you Rummel, thank you Jonathan!
I cannot stop listening to this awesome transcription... Too bad I can't find its score...
This is phenomanal. How have I never heard of this guy before?
Everything that Plowright plays has depth and delicacy, both: listen to him play Mompou or Chopin...he can play ANYTHING, and beautifully!
So sweet, so beautiful, so romantic like love!
@TheClassicalKid more like 100/100
@juizdemeiatigela Baroque piece? No. It's a piece by Bach. It transcends every definition.
Fantastic!
Emerson lake and palmer!
lmao the coughing at 4:00 And its such a nice piece
so moving......
YAY! YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!
