Panasonic Professional S-VHS Deck AG-7350 - Rattles when Lacing/Unlacing - Removing the Head Cleaner

This deck works, but makes a horrible rattling noise when lacing and unlacing. Here's how we fix it. I particularly like the aesthetics of these machines. Panasonic RX-ED55 Cassette Decks Needed New Belts - Fiddly Job! Was it worth the effort?
Just trying this now. Honestly that second USB socket is the worst! About to give up as it’s almost impossible to remove no matter how much I try 😢
Don't give up - those connectors are stupidly fiddly, but once they're all out the rest of the job is plain-sailing.
@ I managed to get it out. Turns out I’d already released the clip it just needed some wiggling and a bit of force to actually remove the cable. Managed to get the cable for the dashcam routed through the glove box and plugged in before I gave up for the day since daylight is no longer on my side. Fingers crossed the rain holds off tomorrow and I can finish the rest of the install. I think it might be the last time I do a dash cam install for a Dolphin though. Luckily my partner has a Seal so the installation for that car was a breeze in comparison!
Wow what a machine
Interestingly enough this was used by Eric Persing to record the samples used for his presets for the Roland D50
Thank you for providing the informative video. I have a quick question: Does the dashcam continue to record in the background while using Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or other applications? Thank you for your time and assistance.
The dashcam records continuously in the background, regardless of what else you're doing with any other apps (unless you go into the dashcam app and stop it recording manually). I don't use Android Auto or Apple Carplay so I can't say for certain, but I would assume it would continue to record while those were in use, but maybe someone else can confirm categorically?
Hi, great video. I have a faulty Sony CMT-NEZ7DAB "No Disc" error and I suspect the CD drive unit needs replacing. How did you source yours on Aliexpress. What did you put into the search for the correct replacement component, please?
Thanks for the comment! It's a while ago I did this, and I'm afraid I can't quite remember how I found the replacement CD mechanism. I think there was a part number on the old unit (TCM125-2 in my case) which I searched the Web for, and the Aliexpress item came up in the search results. The original part was manufactured by Thomson. I'm sure the replacement I got from Aliexpress is a clone, but it seems to work fine and I'm still using this little system.
I watched a video of a dash cam installation and the guy passed the cable through a side panel. The whole process looked much easier than the one shown here. Is passing through the side panel not an option in the dolphin? th-cam.com/video/baLi6deTyiY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1F_esEDqO9DPFbFV
Very helpful comparison! Figured the higher end DV capture devices would do better than Canopus. Also, that song was pure torture...
These kind of comparisons are useless on a YT platform unless you fit them in a 4K frame or upscale them into 4k to take advantage of the VP9 codec of the platform, 480 is severely compressed nowadays, more compressed than what it use to look like a decade ago.
It's a shame that the DN-500 doesn't save analog video in lossless AVI.
I used to fix those vcr's in the United States. They were expensive. They cost about 8 hundred dollars, and most repairs I did would cost about 2 to 3 hundred back in 1996+. Nice Video. Thank you.
Interesting, I didn't know these were sold outside Japan. Maybe there is an English-language service manual.
@@timf-tinkering I worked on allot of Sony ones. I remember that brand too. they were troublesome. Toshiba, and sony were the only brands that I have ever seen in my shop in a 8mm video player, recoders.
Nice video Tim as usual. Re the sticking friction wheel, if its just lack of lubricant (or congealed lubricant), could you not remove it and clean it, then add fresh lubricant? Maybe it needs a spring to bias it back to the head drum which may have lost its spring. Might be hard to replace?
Yes, ideally that's what I would like to do, but I can't find any service documentation for the machine, so it's a daunting prospect!
Are you aware that your lovely dolphin has no zinc layer? Which means that body will probably turn into rusty dust pretty fast.
It’s electrogalvanised, as are most modern cars.
@timf-tinkering nah it is not
26:04. MOVMENT IS JERKY. Should be smooth. Belts bad
Unfortunately there are no belts in the machine (see the followup video), but the speed stability improved after running the machine for a few hours, and the weird buzzing noise in the background also disappeared.
23:37. Might be slow from same weak rewind belt
One thing I forgot to mention in the video: Datavideo made a range of similar "DN-x" DV capture devices, but not all have S-Video or Component inputs. Surprisingly, even the higher model numbers DN-600 and DN-700 have only Composite video inputs. If you need to capture from S-Video or Component, choose carefully.
beautiful, i put many videotapes from vhs to the sony dvd recorder when dvd took over. and make vhs to vhs copies with a decopier. now i am busy restoring an editing set 2x sony SLv815HQ with the video editing system XV-AL200E. (for fun).
You can burn a disc with cdtext on it
Do you have a model number for this belt, I’m having the same issue, and can’t find the same one you found. Thanks
Details of the belt are in the video description. The belt I used is 10mm diameter, 1.0mm square section, but I think a slightly thicker 1.2mm square belt would have been better. An o-ring would probably work just as well.
Nice - great help

Its a great video - thanks for sharing @timf-tinkering - please can you share the source you bought the camera from? So many models and price variations that makes me wonder which to buy.
I'm amazed that we can still find spare belts for such vintage equipment! 1000% worth the effort of keeping that player out of the landfill if you ask me.
Thank you for this Video! but, I have a question, maybe you can help me? I have a TASCAM DA40 and the capstan timing belt was torn. After I reinserted it, the recorder no longer winds and shows on the display: TAPE CUT??? Is it possible that you have to pay attention to the markings when inserting the new belt? like a timing chain in a car? I would be very happy about an answer, thank you very much. ☺
I'm not familiar with the DA-40, but it seems highly unlikely that the capstan belt would be critical for timing. I'm not sure why a lack of reel movement would cause the deck to conclude that the tape has been cut, but I would check that the reel idler is free to swing from side to side and not gummed up with old lubricant, as that seems to be a fairly common problem.
@@timf-tinkering Many thanks for the quick response! Yes, I have already researched further and it could actually be due to stiff parts... I will completely disassemble the drive and clean it. I'll let you know what the result is. What lubricant would you recommend when I put it together? Thank you and best regards!
This Dash Cam is Universe fit global BYD model, we are interested cooperation with you this video.
Taking the picture at 11:05 the right group of 4 holes are as follows: from left to right first hole is an anchor post for the cassette. If you stick tape on it the cassette won't be in a correct position to be detected by the deck. second is the detection hole for a DDS2 120m tape, third is for the DDS1 90m tape and the fourth is open together with the second one for DDS3 120m tapes. All these DDS tapes do work together with the two Tascam DA-30 MK I that I have by permanently shorting the detection switch of hole 2. Oh and cutting the jumper wire W402 on the digital board de-activates SMCS. That's for the Mark I don't know it there is an option for Mark II
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing 🙂. I have also the same model. It have not failed yet.
There were also localised versions of these recorders with the same EP function for different markets. As far as I know, there were also MESECAM EP (in this mode the amount of SECAM-fire is enormous, I've tried recording. In addition, sometimes vertical yellow-green moiré appears, it depends on the cassette itself. On 2-head tape recorders everything is very, very bad), and possibly SECAM EP, in the SECAM region tape recorders I'm trying to find, they were sold presumably only in France and Switzerland (e.g. NV-HV60F). Also there was a similar feature for 525-line regions, somewhere also since 2000 introduced VP speed (like 4 or 5 times slower than standard), it worked in NTSC and obviously should work also in PAL-M (for example in NV-HV60BR model). The quality of all these slow-speed recordings depends very much on the wear and tear of the VCR mechanism, and they don't play very well on other similar recorders...
That's interesting. I did wonder if SECAM EP existed. If you look in the user manual for the JVC HR-S9850, it says "it is not possible to select EP mode if COLOUR SYSTEM is set to MESECAM" which I assumed meant that MESECAM EP was not possible, but maybe Panasonic supported it.
@@timf-tinkering all JVC that i used can't record MESECAM / SECAM in EP. In the instructions for French models it is even separately stated that you can not record SECAM in LP/EP, so Panasonic probably has the most loyal attitude to SECAM. Sharp, by the way, also cannot record MESECAM/SECAM EP
Do you still have the Sony micro system ?
Yes. Still works.

What a great old machine. I've never seen one of those before. Very cool tech for it's time. Thanks for sharing.
The DVD player you are using as the S/PDif source may be adding the “SCMS” copy protect code. You may have better luck with a standard ordinary CD Player that has S/Pdif output.
Any issues with e-3 errors?
I can't remember if it was E-3, but I did once get an error on one of these machines that had been in storage for a long time, but the fault seemed to clear itself after a couple of power cycles.

Thanks for this Tim! Going to have to give this a go sometime this week as my camera arrived this morning. I noticed that yours had a BYD logo on the sticker packaging but nothing on the camera itself. Some cameras online appear to have the BYD logo embossed onto the metal. I can't be sure if it's genuine or not
Mine has a small BYD logo on the bottom edge of the camera, which wasn't visible in the video. It looks and feels like a genuine part to me, but it's possible it's a copy. Either way it seems to work ok :-)
I'm seriously struggling removing the connector you had trouble with at 4:00. It's been an hour already - even though I'm pushing the latch down (even with a screwdriver), the connector just doesn't seem to budge. Any tips?
Hmm, I'm not sure. I remember that one being a problem, but only because I couldn't find where the latch was. Once I'd identified the latch and managed to push it, the connector came out with a bit of a waggle.
@@CardFreak999 I had the same problem and fixed it with an inch long straight screwdriver bit. The corner in just the right place underneath made it suddenly easy. It’s on the driver’s end of the connector.

Updates and things I forgot to mention in the video: * - My Dolphin was running software version 1.3, which was the latest version available at the time of recording the video. The car has since updated to version 1.4.1, and the dashcam continues to work as normal. * - I used a 128GB MicroSD card, which was originally formatted as exFAT. The dashcam seemed quite happy with this and worked perfectly. However, to avoid any possible compatibility issues, I decided to re-format the card in the car (an option under Settings in the Dashcam app), which formatted it as FAT32. * - Some cars are apparently now being sold in the UK with the wiring harness for the dashcam already in place, so it's worth checking to see if the cable is present behind the rear-view mirror before starting.
Great video! First install I've seen on a Dolphin. I installed one into my Seal which already had the wiring, just had to install dashcam, plug it in and it was all good. Its unfortunate but they are starting to come out without the cable as well. That's the hardest part to fit!
Thank you! I think in most countries, the wiring for the dashcam is already in place from the factory. It seems to be the UK and maybe a couple of other countries that don't get the wiring.
Super video (again!) Tim. I like your presentational style. We're right with you for all the twists and turns. Complete with grunts and groans and the seats brow! Just like we all do on DIY jobs. Not glamourisec, no jazzy video effects or racy music. Other Y.T usery please note. Should get a good following expecially as that beautiful BYD Dolphin is likely to "take off" in the UK.
Seats should have read "sweaty"
Nice video, definitely starting at top & working down is the way to do this. Shame no way to connect up without taking all the control panel off. Now to persuade daughter to let me rip on her car. As a aside has yours updated the software on the head unit?

It was a very fun machine. 👍
Back in the 80s and 99s I used to work in merchant banking in the city of London, all trader phone (and other voice circuits) were continuously recorded during the working day, so there were many entire racks filled with this sort of recorder, and although I never came across these particular units, devices using vhs tape were common. It was someone’s job to change the tapes daily on these dozens of recorders. As noted elsewhere in the comments, that’s an RJ21 on the back, up to 25 x balanced 600 ohm line level feeds per connector, using a 25 twisted pair cable. Of course these machines are all ancient history with hard disk recording rapidly becoming the norm, the real advantage of which was not the end of swapping and storing a months worth of tapes, but same day playback, rather than having to wait for swapsies to recover the wanted tape.
Interesting experiment! Regarding the S/PDIF input the following. The Copy Prohibit flag is always high when this input is used. A digital copy is only possible with a source that allows digital copying. The digital output of a consumer CD player always has that flag high. The digital output of the CD player can be modified. But it is also possible to modify the digital input of the 601, allowing unlimited digital copying. I once did that to one of my 601s and it worked fine. It is recommended to connect the video transmitter to the Copy output of the 601. Then the best result is obtained. When a tape without copy prohibition is played and the Copy key is pressed, a stable and error-corrected video signal is presented to the copy output.
