How not to introduce the Tempotreadle and fabric for a new Smokkr@Viksdottirsloom9715
มุมมอง 2622 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video was supposed to be about introducing the Tempotreadle from LoftyFibers and about fabric for my new apron dress (Smokkr). Unfortunately I hadn’t quite got used to the new device and it all went wrong during filming lol! But it does show my woven fabric for my new dress and how I’m going to make it.
Making Quince & Cranberry Jelly
มุมมอง 512 หลายเดือนก่อน
I make most of my jams and jellies using a Ball Jam & Jelly maker. It’s a great machine but only for small amounts as the max you can put in it is either a 1kg of fruit or 1litre of juice/fluid. So it can make about 4-5 small jars. You have to use a quick acting pectin and it tells you when to add the sugar. Jam can take as little as 21 minutes and jelly 25 minutes. So this video goes through t...
Preserving dried tomatoes in oil
มุมมอง 942 หลายเดือนก่อน
I was given a food dehydrator for my birthday recently. I had been wondering if it would give me an alternative form of storage for my vegetable gluts. So I decided to try dehydrating my plum tomatoes and preserving them in oil. This is a short video on how I did it.

Weaving the Varafeldur Part 3 - Chaining the warps & knitting the heddles
มุมมอง 5185 หลายเดือนก่อน
Having put the warp on to the loom and sorted them out into front warps and back warps the next step is to chain the heddles. This separates the warps evenly and stops them from tangling with each other. This is best done after the loom weights have been added as they are easier to make sure they are in the right order. It has the added bonus of keeping the correct width and stabilising the set...

I can’t seem to reply no I don’t wash them at all. In Vikings times they would not have washed them as the natural oils such as lanolin woukd help to make the varafeldur water resistant and the rain would mostly run off.
Thank you so much! I’m all warped up and ready to start weaving . Thank you for sharing this!
How do you prepare your locks for this project? I have some that I would love to use
We have full fleeces so I pull suitable locks off and there will be the fluffy bit at one en the actual lock at the other. You don’t want to have all of the fluffy end as it would be too much so we tend to card it gently to ‘clean’ it up a bit. I use raw fleece so often there is some bits of field stuck to it. That’s about it. Hope that helps.
I have several full fleeces that I was sorting locks by size. Do you scour them to remove the scent and lanolin at all?
I said I would add a link to James Delarre & Saul Rose. Please find it below saulrosejamesdelarre.bandcamp.com/album/kith-and-kin
A great idea Jayne I simply freeze most of my tomatoes 🍅 and give lots to my daughter,Ali ☔️🇨🇦
Yes I’ve got pounds of them in the freezer but I wanted to do something different with these. Amazed how they shrivel away to nothing! Feel cheated somehow lol.
Hello Jayne, I am not doing a lot of winter veg this year as I’m moving loads of stuff around. But never say never right 😂. Look forward to you posting videos, have a great week, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
Thank you! This is only my third year so just starting to get to grips with winter veg.
@@Viksdottirsloom9715 you are doing amazing and I’ll make sure to pass on the channel 👍👍
Thank you very much! Very inspiring video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you sew the top thread to keep the cross?
Yes I sew the two threads which are keeping the threads separated ie at the cross to the top beam. There are holes in the beam about an inch apart which the thread goes through. I used waxed linen thread as it’s quite strong. I usually sew it on in one direction and then go back the other way.
Im hoping this video will spur on my husband to finish our WWloom. it been 4 years so far.
Such an interesting project. If you continue making videos PLEASE leave out the annoying and overpowering background music. Sorry- it ruins your videos.
Noted! I always worry about the deadly silence lol! So very happy to hear your comments. Thank you.
Appreciate your videos. You skip from attaching the warp to testing the heddles -- but no info on how to knit on the heddles. That would have been really helpful.
@@woolwell_farm hi! I’m glad you asked that question as I thought I had already added as I knew I filmed it lol! So now I have just added exactly the video you wanted to see! I hadn’t realised it never uploaded! Thank you for liking the videos
th-cam.com/video/JMmMaW0TyDE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=21z9bqPSYioKDvrp Try this!
Have you seen all of them in the series? I filmed the whole thing in a series of videos so you should be able to follow them. There is also one I did of the complete process with Hebridean wool.
Yeah thanks I was just wondering how tall I should make the uprights since I want my varafeldur to drape down to my to my feet I was thinking having it be about 1. 88 meters high and the cloth beam being around three inches thick but I'm not sure since I'm not an expert so would like your opinion on that if you can. i would like to use White Icelandic wool, black Gotland wool, grey Shetland wool for mine, and i was just thinking of just using the raw fleece and not separating the tog and thel
Ok I don’t know whether I have got confused by what you said. Unless your loom is over 2 metres wide generally you will weave the varafeldur with the length of the warp being the width across your shoulders so the length on you will be the dictating by the width of your loom. I hope that makes sense. So if you imagine the finished article is a rectangular shape then the longer side will go across your shoulders and the shorter side will be the length down your back. It doesn’t matter how tall your loom is as you will need to roll it up on the top beam as you work. So effectively you can make your work as long as you want. Historically these were set at about 1m by 2m in total by the Gulating laws and only worn by men! Since I did these videos I’ve now become a speaker on the warp weighted loom and in particular the varafeldur.
have you got anymore videos on this? i would like to make a varafeldur myself but im new to weaving so i figured it would be a nice project to do i just cant find any videos on the subject.

I lived your video. I have a david 3. Great loom! Happy New Year
that's a beauty! like the herringbone..
Thank you!
Appreciate you taking the time to share your work. Beautiful.
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Hope 2024 is better for you. Is that a 110cm width Spring and did you warp it to the full width ?
Thank you. It’s a Louet Spring II 110cm wide. It wasn’t quite full width (410 warps with the 40/100 reed (about 10 wpi) but it shrunk a lot on wet finishing.
Hi I’ve sent you a DM on Instagram
Great insight into how these things were made! Thank you! And now I'm interested in trying out if I can do something similar with the fur my dogs lose when I brush or shear them... 😆
Your work is simply stunning! I do Viking reenactment / living history (mostly tablet weaving, hand sewing, and leather working) and I am thinking of buying a shawl like this from you. However, first I will have to look into this whole thing with taxes and import fees etc. ...
This is incredibly beautiful! Sorry to hear that 2023 wasn't a happy year for you for the most part. May 2024 be all the happier for you then!
Bless you! I lost my Mother in the middle of weaving this just before Christmas and finally finished it New Years Eve.
Gorgeous work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you.
my jaw just dropped at the end with the finished project that is amazing work!
this is incredibly helpful as I am starting my varafeldur project come the new year, thanks!
Lovely, beautifully woven
looks to be alot'o'work, good job you
Thank you! I don’t do it for the money lol!

Bet it's lovely and warm to wear!
Yes it is and quite heavy.
I know of one that has been woven in Merseyside!
Oh really? That’s interesting.
nice job
Brilliant!
Very interesting!
Thank you!
Love it. Would you mind posting the isbn number for the book you show? Your video was great and very clear.
Yes it’s ISBN 978-82-7959-219-8
Wow, this is amazing - serious labor intensive work, and dedication. You have True passion!
That is wonderful. I've been wanting to do something similar. I do have a couple of questions. Did you wash the locks before weaving? If you did, how much lanolin was left in? In the video you showed weaving in the locks using the back heddles. Did you use the back ones each time, or did you use both back and front ones? I assume you used the 2 colors of warp to keep track of beating as you went across the warp? If not, may I ask why you used 2 colors? This is a phenomenal project! Thanks for the video, it really helped me understand the process!
Orlaithe the Wanderer thank you! No I didn’t wash the fleece before weaving, the first fleece we bought were already washed but I found them too felted and we’re pretty useless. There was a lot of grease still in the fleece I did use. Makes your hands beautifully soft. But that was why I washed it gently when finished trying not to felt it. Yes I did try to alternate between front and back warps by making 3 passes of tabby weave sometimes between adding the locks. I write a little more about the background and photos on my FB page Viksdottir’s Loom I did it over 2-3 posts.
A beautiful piece. You must be so proud.
Thank you so much. Yes I am!
