1958 Chevrolet Viking 60 - 350 swap with starter disengagement trouble
มุมมอง 2.7K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Starter is mounted to the bellhousing with 3 bolts, in contrast to the newer method of mounting to the block. Popular opinion as of right now is that using 'misc' bolts may be causing the alignment issue. The reman starter may also have a weak return spring.
One day ill have one just dont know when

Nice Viking 60! Did the 350 bolt right up to the stock tranny & bellhousing? I have a 261 in mines and considering doing a swap of a small block 327 or 350.
Thanks! This also had the 261 in it. The bell housing is indeed different. Looking back at my notes, it looks like you want a GM 505 bellhousing to mate to the SM420. I found one locally from a guy that was doing jeep conversions. I got the dust shield kit from here: www.4speedconversions.com/505_cover_set.html I added a V8 cross member (ends need welded but it bolts in between the frame rails.) I also needed to slightly shift the brake line that passes through the frame to get room for the cross member. It still using bellhousing mounts for the rear motor mounts. The SM420 isn't a fast shifter but it's stock and I love the integrated ebrake! The floor starter was also deleted, for better/worse; I just added a pushbutton start to one of the stock holes in the dash. While not original, the swap has given the truck more gumption and is much more 'turnkey'. The cool thing was I eventually found a guy that wanted the tired 261, so it went to a good home.
Thank you so much for the insight and advice mojobird70 ! I've found a 454 that I'd like swap out the 261 for and I'd still like to run the original 4 speed and 2 speed axle with the V8 Big Block swap. (like you; I love the integrated Emergency brake!) The link you sent me seems like it's a bastion of info on how to get that done. Your push button mod is a nice update and I think I'm going to vamp that Idea from you into my project as well... By the way; Did you ever suss out your starter issues? What was the culprit in the end? Again, thank you for your advice and insight.
Cool! Are you changing the rear at all? Mine has the 2spd rear; I think final drive is 6.4. Even with the oldschool 20x7 wheels, 55mph is screaming pretty good (60mph is just over 5k on the tach if I recall correctly). With a 454 you could probably start up in 2nd gear and drive around in 4th the rest of the time. :) As for that starter, it's all good now, remedied with shims or washers...I forget. I want to say I shimmed the outside edge to change the angle away from the flywheel teeth slightly. I'd need to take another look. I'm fortunate that the brakes and rear shift unit had been restored and well taken care of in my truck. Trying to modify those medium-duty specific parts wasn't part of my plan.
how many miles does it have
can I have that car please ☺☺
