    You have to put a quarter in the phone first... But who knows? If an operator greeted you, you might have entered the Twilight Zone... and your wonderful video would have faded to black. We would have lost you! LOL! Great video! The banter with your bro is lively! That is one stately courthouse. The oaks surrounding it were planted in two different time periods. The younger, slimmer oaks appear to have been planted at the same time as the courthouse was constructed, so they are about 120 years old. When planted, they would have been about fifteen years old or more. The older, much larger, and thicker trunked oaks were also planted, but about 150-200 years BEFORE, making them easily 250+ years old. The giveaway is the symmetry and placement of all of these oaks. This makes me wonder what was there BEFORE the courthouse?

    I am from around this area and can say all of those churches are still being used. Yes that was an old gas station. That house they thought could be a funeral home actually belonged to a then family member who did not run a funeral home. They skipped the school completely as well as the community center. There hasn't been a tornado through here in many many years. Just an old run down town.

    I love these backroad country drives! The Golden Rod @2:40 lightens the tragedy of an old house in disrepair. About mid-August? The Masonic Temple is outstanding in every way! Those spider-web windows are out of this world. I was hoping you'd peek in the windows with the camera! I am curious about the 5-point stars that pop up on so many buildings you drive by, like @4:23 --- what do they represent? Did you see that old oak tree in the background @5:45 It's got to be over four hundred years old! What a find @16:06. It looks like a super-high quality porte cochere! The kind you'd see on all the older grand homes. I had a great (edit) time riding Along The Way through the beautiful countryside today with you and your bro! Thank you for sharing!

    • @along-the-way
      @along-the-way 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @greengold7648 I've grown quite fond of the golden rod, since I've learned what they are from you! I was on the porch of the Masonic Hall...gawking away and I was about to go window peeping with the camera...then I saw a Louisiana State Trooper parked next door looking my way. I went over to let him know what I was doing, and I got a wonderful history lesson on the area! The drawbridge was actually used as a target for flour bombs when training pilots! I also heard that the lake was full of mussels with pearls and a "pearl rush" was started in 1909...but quickly ended in 1911 when they built the dam. I've seen those Barnstars in so many places. I think most people use them as decor, but some may use them for symbolism? I had never heard of a Porte cochere..another great thing you've taught me! Maybe there was a grand house in the area at one time? I think it may be an old gas station though. Thank you again for sharing! I always like reading about what you see and learning new things! And what an awesome catch at 5:45 ! Hello beautiful Tree! 😊

    • @greengold7648
      @greengold7648 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@along-the-wayGlad you love the Goldenrod! I do, too. I love to hear about the history! Thank you! I guess you do have to be careful about peeping into windows --- now that I think about it! Nice trooper! The gas station Porte you photographed is just extra sturdy and classy for a business. They don't ordinarily make them so nice. Today's gas station Portes are cheap overhead weather protection canopies. The Porte Cochere is where visitors would drive their buggies, horses, and early automobiles to the main house and drop off passengers with overhead protection from the elements. This is usually on the side of the old grand homes and is part of the entry driveway. I have also seen the Porte Cochere at the front of houses with semi-circular driveways, but that is more rare. Interesting story on the flour bombs and pearl rush! Thank you! If you wouldn't mind, please ask someone with the star emblem on their building what it might signify I would be most grateful. Thank you for sharing!

I have so many happy memories that I cherish. All the good folks I got to know and the history. @missmadness4689 Unfortunately, many of America's small towns are drying up as the way of the world has gone in a new direction. Mt Vernon is holding up pretty well, and with that Romanesque Courthouse to gawk at, it's hard to notice anything else at first. lol...But the changes are painful to see sometimes. A coast to coast trip would be awesome, but I would recommend the sooner the better. Everything is disappearing at a rapid rate, and so is the history.
