Victorian P Diddlers had a lot more class and subtlety, with speech more free, so long as the royals were more dumb than thee
58:42 One test of a production is how well they work as a chorus with "Hail Poetry!" This cast nails it. Listen to all those parts.

The soprano’s coloratura passages were not supposed to be funny. Why was the audience laughing?

I hate musicals...yet this is the 10th x I've watched this video. Can't explain it.
@@jjamiejackson what a conundrum
This contributed to my sexual awakening.
That's great fun. Thank you to all concerned.
Researching Doug Chamberlain for an EWOKS project. The man has virtually no internet presence. So I was delighted to find this! 😀
@@fandompowerpodcast I didn't know he was an ewok in Star wars! 😂😄😋
@@adambrannon8934 Logray in Season 1 of the animated series 😀
@@fandompowerpodcast btw he is in 2 other productions on my channel. Iolanthe and the gondoliers
Sublime. Flawless.
There's so much to admire about this excellent production except the ridiculously fast tempi throughout. Poor Sir Joseph Porter struggles to get out his words in "When I Was a Lad" and so does the chorus.
I'm seeing it in Central City, Colorado this weekend.
The singer who plays Luiz reminds me of Justin Trudeau.
Ha!!! I see it!
This is my favorite production... I've rewatched this 100's of times and it never disappoints!!❤❤
great production.. talented cast.. !!!
I wonder if Dick Deadeye is ugly because he says the ugly truth, and everyone hates him for it...
"you are rather triangular"
Great policemen, choreography and chorus.
Amazing, costumes, music, vocal quality, choreography an absolute delight! With imaginative routines too!
On reflection, not only was it the best Pirates I have seen, it was the best G&S. Stunning.
BRILLIANT! and I have been watching G&S since the 70s. The best Major General I have seen. Damned good band too.
Thank you so much for posting this. This superb production is THE BEST!! Yes G & S is wonderful music but this performance just glows in every way - singing, dancing, and sheer fun.

I echo most sentiments here that this is THE BEST PRODUCTION of The Gondoliers I have seen to date. Fantastically cast with wonderful singers. What makes it such a thrill to watch is, in my opinion, Berthold Carriere’s brisk tempi (other G&S conductors ought to take note) and the exceptional and choreography, so well executed by the cast. What lifts it in a class of its own is the addition of the 5 Commedia del Arte figures as the quasi narrators/greek chorus throughout. Brilliant. I saw it last on TV in the eighties and have been desperate to see it again and only now, miraculously, found it here on TH-cam. Same production was put on in my home city (Sydney, Australia) but, alas, it lacked the absolute zing of this vefrsion. Am thrilled to bits to have it on YT. And yeah, I’m a retired opera singer and yes, I did a few G&S in my time, including Luiz decades ago.
I have been tracking them down the best versions I can to upload for others to see. Glad I could help.
Adam, thank you soooo much for the upload, and the others. You have no idea how happy this production makes me. I just can’t pick any little bit to criticize. It’s just perfect in every department if you ask me. Just watched it again for the umpteenth time since a month ago. ❤
@@figaroqua221 you're welcome, I'd upload the Mikado as well, but last I checked. It's on TH-cam already. I know that show catches a lot of flack.
Such Great rendition of Pinafore
God why can’t they speak with English accents
Why would you upload this in a low resolution format? Why not in high definition? This is fuzzy and the sound is not clear.
Best quality I can manage from a recording 40 years old. This is how it looks on the dvd
Wonderful!
1:37:01 That song is not part of this play
I enjoyed every minute, especially the dancing and especially especially the tap routine.
The giant dolls were perfect!
will be putting on the gondoliers next week, i will be a low bass in the men's chorus. been practicing it for three months now, doing it with our local savoyards fan group. can't believe i'll be on stage with a full orchestra performing the same show i've listened to hundreds of times, in front of hundreds of people. thank you so much for uploading all of these videos! they've really helped me find my passion for G&S and now i am hooked for life.
I'm glad these productions have been enjoyable. The one show I would have loved to see this company do is rudigore, but alas.
Auditioning for this show in a couple weeks and wanted to watch it through to really get a feel. What a FUN show and a FABULOUS production! Thanks for posting!!
I wish you luck. That would be amazing to see wherever it's performing.
Well I may be crazy, but it appears as though Madonna has also seen this video . . . check out her version of "Vogue" in 1990. th-cam.com/video/lTaXtWWR16A/w-d-xo.html
I am blown away by how good the sound is - with no visible microphones! Most productions from recent decades have visible mikes attached to the singers; how is this sound so good without that? Sometimes I find myself suspecting that they're just miming to a studio recording - but surely not??
Actually yes, I think the talking bits are from an overhead mic, but the singing is definitely recorded after the fact for TV. I spotted some out of sync lip movements from the Mikado in.....the Mikado..ha!
@@adambrannon8934 Shocker!! I wonder if this was ever released as an LP soundtrack...
@@TueSorensen unsure, but you could always TH-cam to mp3
Long live The Pirate King Brent Carver❤❤

I did it for the gondolier's and it was a nightmare!🤣
Sound is a disaster,The actor's voice gives me a headache
That was amazing!!!
What a wonderful performance
I've always wondered - if the new rule is that a fairy will die if she doesn't marry a mortal - doesn't making all the men into fairies doom them all?
I've always thought this too, but it just occurred to me that, except the Queen, they all *married* a mortal (the mortals just got turned into fairies thereafter)
It really plays with the concept of whether an aristocrat should marry a commoner, and whether the commoner should also be given the title after marrying the aristocrat, etc!
❤❤❤
❤❤amszing hope we could see this opera morevoften
