DIY 2006 BMW z4 low beam xenon bulb change
Everybody changes the high beam bulb
You did not use the correct, D2s Xenon bulb, bro!
Yea I know. Video is 10 years old. Wrong bulb used. Check description and other comments for correct bulb. Same process, Good luck
I found easier to jack car, remove tire. A lot more room to operate in. Overall the process is a PIA. I swear BMW forget bulb replacement during car design, and this mess is an afterthought.
He was informative but I can't listen to his monotone voice anymore.. it's like listening to Eyore on Winnie the pooh. Just annoys me from a real person but his info was good.
Thank you for video! Really cool stuff
Please do not introduce this video as tutorial> You arent qualified to tutor others on BMW care. And the title should read "My attempt to install an incorrect bulb." Its misleading and wastes people's time.
Comment is 8 years late. Keeping title. Yes made mistakes and have told people that there are mistakes. I’m not a pro, just a guy that changed his lightbulb...eventually
You can compliment the centre arm rest with the elbow pads for the door armrests. They make both arms rest level with each other for comfort.
Great step by step video, you're a great help, even if the bulb was not the right one. But this is useful, because when I was buying the parts to replace my bulb, I was tempted to buy halogen, wanting lower light so as not to blind others. However, if your car has HID/Xenon lights, you must use a Xenon bulb, as the ballast does not accommodate a halogen bulb. *The more you know~*
Glad you found it useful! Yes I made a couple mistakes, glad you didn’t repeat!
Haha, what the hell is that??? :D Dude please take the hands of your car Trying to change a xenon bulb with a standard H7 Halogen bulb 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ Your a lucky guy, that you're still living while disconnecting the positive terminal first....
Live and learn fuma
You only did the outside bulb. What about the inside bulbs?
Only changed one bulb. Low beams. Sold the car years ago, can’t remember if it was outside or inside
WARNING This video needs taking down before it gets someone hurt or worse. That is NOT how you disconnect a car battery, and you’re asking to cause a fire if you do. The creator doesn’t know the difference between a xenon and halogen bulb. He has no business offering anyone “advice”.
Yea I messed up a couple things going through this the first time several years ago (normal occurrence when learning). This is not a tutorial, and I am not an expert, this is just how I changed my bulb. I’m glad to link your video on proper install in the description. Thanks
@@lankaprince not being an expert is one thing. Wilfully giving out dangerous misinformation is another. This is literally car mechanics 101 stuff.
Tuna!!
Florentino Valdez haha you’re my only view, thanks
Good camera presence! I could totally listen to you narrating instructions for a poker app. Jordan looks so pretty in this video. How did the Jordanians know you were a tourist? Did some of them mistake you for a different nationality? The closest I came to blending in was at Piccadilly Circus at the fountain, someone assumed I was German (handlebar stache). And in Vancouver they just assumed my party were all from eastern Canada! Other than that, yeah they know we're US tourists. Middle Eastern citizens are reminded that tourism dollars are important, and apparently the message does trickle down to the average citizen. I hope you get to travel again, soon!
zippyman818 thanks!! Some people tried to speak Arabic to me based on my looks but as soon as I spoke they knew I was american. Yea Jordan people are super nice, and tourism is building up. Good idea with the YT video, I’ll make one
Very helpful - thanks!! Bummer about the wrong bulb though.
Looks nice bro. Value of the e85 will rise for sure. Looks sick and bad ass after all these years. The next 2 generations are flops.
You always disconnect the Negative Battery connection. Never allow Ballast to drop!
Thanks for the video Tyrone. Bought a bulb at the dealership, followed your video, had it done in less than 20 minutes. ✊🏼👍🏼
Got a 2007 Z4, right side low beam is very dim. I will use this to check my ballast and bulb. Thanks man!! I have been looking all over for a no frills video on how to. I will let you know how it turns out. THANKS AGAIN!!
You pulled out a xenon headlight bulb and you’re trying to stick in a standard H series halogen bulb in they’re completely different!!! Noticed that there was no ceramic on the replacement bulb you were trying to stick in. And the blue tinted H bulbs suck anyways even if it was a halogen headlight application which is not. I hope you didn’t mess up the ballast module when you installed it over that Halogen bulb? LOL I’m a master automotive technician at a large BMW dealership
Dana Larsen lol he made a good video with completely wrong parts lol
I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
Thanks for this video - followed it step by step and easily replaced my bulb. I did have one tricky issue. Inside the ballast, there’s a plastic ring with slots that need to align with the openings that go over the prongs on the bulb. My ring kept moving out of alignment when I tried to turn the ballast back on, so it wouldn’t lock down. The ring was easily aligned with a small screwdriver and then installed as normal.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this comment cause I was totally stumped on why I could not get my ballast back on. Apparently this is all part of some elaborate safety mechanism that's made to disconnect the power cable automatically when the ballast is removed but that also means that if someone does what I tried to do multiple times, plug the power cable back in when the access is a little easier before reinstalling the ballast, they won't be able to do it. But damn am I glad for comments like your's, I was totally stuck and even contemplating taking it into the shop the next day because I was seriously worried I had bent something.
Oh my god THANK YOU!!! You just saved me some dough!! For anyone else reading, it's a white/yellow ring that's underneath the black plastic. So if you're looking at the bulb socket side of your ballast, it's the 3rd layer in. TUNDERBALLKABOOM YOU DA MVP
Always disconnect the Neg, never the Pos, reason if That pos cable hits metal while the Neg is connected your going to short your system out. Then your going to have some serious problems
Thanks! My 2003 Z4 passenger side just went out (205K miles, 13 years = pretty long life bulb). Went to O'Reilly to buy replacement, not knowing about Halogen vs. HID option. Luckily, counter guy, Ty H., was knowledgeable - asked me if they flickered or grew in brightness when turning on. Answer Yes = HID = D2S. Bad news = $100 price. Other bad news, light package, Sylvania web page, and owner's manual warn about high voltage and death. (Owner's manual says for Halogen, do yourself, for HID, go to dealer.) Your video gave me the courage to defy death, and attempt the swap. Your video made it easy, and all went well. Note, though, that the D2S bulb has to be properly oriented, as the socket has slots to ensure orientation (unlike the Halogen). The outside wire from the top of the bulb goes on the bottom. Also, as someone else posted, the wire to the ballast pops off when you turn the ballast; you don't put the wire back until the ballast is mounted on the bulb. Thanks!
Thanks for putting up this video. I have a 2007 BMW M Coupe and it worked exactly the same. Your instructions were very helpful. I would of probably broke something if I didn't watch prior. ^5!!
Successful or not, your guide helped me with 3 bulbs and saved me hundreds from the stealers. Thank you!
Hi. Great video. The lightbulb clip fell off when I pulled the bad bulb out. Any ideas how to reattach the bulb clip? Thanks
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Now I don't have to go to stealership to get either ballast or bulb replaced. I think your bulb is the same one in bimmian except you need to get retrofit kit for xenon lights (longer ones). Am I right?
+Chris Jay hey glad you dont have to pay the dealership! yea the bulb i used in the video was incorrect, so i bought the correct one and used the same procedure and everything worked. it is a longer bulb. see my previous comments, i think i provided a link to the exact bulb. good luck
+Tyrone Tracy my bulb doesnt seem to sit correctly in the holder . ie when it clips in and it will only clip in one direction and thats not the correct way round for the igniter?
Thanks for the video bud. It's very helpful
This video was very, very helpful and we really appreciate it. Here are a few additional notes. The plug did not fall out of the ballast. It is pushed out when you turn the ballast to remove it. This is a built-in safety mechanism so you don't get juiced. Because of this, you must reinstall the ballast before reconnecting the wire. If the ballast won't go on the bulb, you may have to align the white nylon ring so the notch in it lines up with the notch on the black part of the ballast. This slot is for the "pin" on the side of the bulb. We followed this procedure to replace the bulb on a 2003 Z4. On our car, the same bulb is both low and high beam. It appears that a shield blocks part of the light in one of the modes. The separate H7 bulb that is next to the xenon (and is shown as lit in the video) never lights on this model and I'm not sure why it is there. The dealer had no explanation.
Wayne L Tks for the tip.... That little white ring had me messed up for awhile until I read your comment.
+Wayne L Actually that light is the bulb used by the car when you flash it. I first thought flashing my lights simply turns on the high beam. Apparently flashing involves a different set of lights
Great tutorial! swapped out my xenon's following this tutorial. Thanks!
rock1275 awesome! i did my other bulb too the other day. hopefully they last a while...
you're an idiot. You put in H7 halogen bulb! You need D2S bulb for that headlight!!!!
Xenon Brasov thanks buddy. live and learn i guess :). i swapped it out immediately and everything has been working fine since...
+Tyrone Tracy damn bro these D2S bulbs cost 99.99$ each the fck
+Xenon Brasov I have a 2003 Z4 and the handbook says use H7
If you don't have xenon headlights you have H7. If xenon you have D2S
+Xenon Brasov Thanks, understood
what wind deflector is that?
+Andi Bocsardi it's a clear acrylic wind blocker. i got it for around 250$. check out this link: www.roadstersolutions.com/page69.html I'll make another video reviewing if it actually works (generally I'd say yes)
When you disconnect a battery always remove the earth lead first! If not, you can weld a spanner between the positive and the chassis!
Thanks so much for this - helped loads :)
how did you get those halos around your lowbeams?
Michael Behfar halos came with the car. i think they're called angel eye halo. i'm not sure if it's stock on a z4...
Thank you very much for the detailed video.
Watched the video and was able to swap out each light in less than 5 min. Thanks!
Great instructions mate, just changed low beam lights on my Z4 following this video without removing the tires.
hey, yea hoping the video helped people out. i got the correct replacement bulb from ebay.com. Just search "GE LIGHTING D2S X 1 BULB 53500 HID 35W REPLACEMENT 4300K XENON GERMANY HEADLIGHT". cost is about $60. i'm sure you can go to your local dealership and they'll sell you the part, might be more expensive, maybe 80 or 90 dollars.
i didn't get the light programmed. Just take out old one and put in new one. What does programming the light mean? I dont think there's a circuit in there, circuity should be outside applying or not applying voltage to the bulb, all i did was replace the bulb (not the circuit controlling it). Maybe they mean headlight leveling, my car levels the headlights automatically. i'm sure there are videos on how to make sure your car's headlights are level.
hey do you mind me asking where did you get your bi-xenon bulb from and how much did it cost you. Thank you for posting the video btw... it really helps.
Quick question @Tyrone Tracy, when changing the lights do you have to get the light programmed b/c I'm getting told that alot outhere in GA?
yes you should be able to replace that bulb without taking the wheel off. It's a little cramped but i think it was possible. search "Changing BMW Z4 Front Blinker Bulbs" on youtube, someone made a video.
you can take the wheel off if you want. But some people dont have access to a jack stand....
Is it possible to change the blinker or indicator light without removing the wheel?
why didn't you take off the wheel and remove the light?
No such thing as bi-xenon bulb (not sure why they call it bi-xenon). What happens is that when you turn on high beams the xenon low beam bulb gets brighter and a halogen high beam comes on, so total light output increases. So you need to replace your bulb with a 'regular' xenon bulb. I bought the original (OEM) lights, do a search on ebay for this: GE LIGHTING D2S X 1 BULB 53500 HID 35W REPLACEMENT 4300K XENON GERMANY HEADLIGHT
Thanks for the post, man! What Xenon Bulb did you buy? Is there a thing as Bi_Xenon bulb?
hey, so my car has the bi-xenon bulbs however i was using the halogen H7s in the video, so foolishly i had the wrong replacement bulb. i ended up buying a xenon bulb and it worked great. So check if you have a xenon or halogen bulb then buy the proper replacement. I think the z4 stock option is H7 halogen unless you upgraded your lights
