Thank you for this wonderful video. I have a question. I am a refugee. Do I need to do something different? I checked the HCPC website and they say, "If you are a refugee send an email and we will give you a guide and an application form." I sent an email but they gave me an automatic answer which was "Don't send an email for your individual questions check our website." What should I do? Thank you.
Thanks for watching and the comment. According to the HCPC website, the refugee application is slightly different and not done online. Email international@hcpc-uk.org with the subject 'Refugee international application' and request the application form and guidance. Keep it simple!

Why does potassium rise and calcium, magnesium and Alkp drop?
EDTA is the anticoagulant used in purple top tubes to stop the blood from clotting. Some parameters like cell counts cannot be done on clotted blood. EDTA contains a lot of potassium. When you're measuring things such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, you want to remove the cells and look at the ions in the plasma. Hence, these are done on clotted samples (usually yellow top). If you transfer blood from an EDTA tube to a yellow serum tube commonly used in chemistry, the potassium is falsely elevated. Also EDTA stops blood clotting by chelating calcium and magnesium ions. So when its present due to contamination (tube transfer) it'll falsely reduce the two (magnesium/calcium) on the analyse. Hope that makes sense!
