Here's another fantastic song from the debut album of Crowded House, released in 1986 - a work of pure, timeless genius.
Upon first listening, the unique (and beautiful) writing style might make many players assume this one is maybe a little more difficult than the typical pop-music fare. But it's really not, thanks to the capo, which we've employed for both our guitar and ukulele versions.
That said, here are a few pointers to watch out for:
1) The intro chords are unusual, but easy. On guitar, you want to NOT play the lowest string, and use your ears to guide your strumming so you can emphasize the high notes of the chord on the upbeats, to match the recording. On uke, just play those chords as written - they'll sound great.
2) There are two bars with only two beats in them: bars 36 and 65. Keep yours eyes peeled for those!
3) There's only one example of syncopation in the whole song: in bar 20, the A shape (it's B-flat, with the capo) is played half-way between the third and fourth beats.
4) In bar 58, you'll see an Em shape and F#m shape (ignoring the capo), which don't occur anywhere else. That's a bit of an oddity in this song - they're actually substituting for G and A chords, and you could just as easily play G and A shapes there instead, and no one would be the wiser. But we do try to reflect the recording accurately, so that's what we've notated.
5) On guitar, we show two versions of the G chord. We use the barred G chord when moving between the Bm and F# shapes (again, ignoring the capo), because it's almost the same finger positions for all those chords. We show the common open G shape everywhere else, just to give your hand a little relief. You can absolutely play either shape, wherever any G chord occurs, of course.
This one is such a classic, it's really worth the effort to master. ENJOY!
