i used to use auto drift when if first started out but now i use manual drift after playing the game for quite some time. i dont really base whether or not i should use auto or manual on the character, i rather base it on the vehicle. now i decide to use manual drift mo matter what but i still prefer using manual drift with inside drifting vehicles such as magikruiser, bullet bike, flame runner/bowser bike etc on certain tracks. for example, i prefer using inside-drifiting vehicles on N64 sherbet land and courses with tightly packed walls such as GBA bowser castle 2 and N64 bowser castle because i'd ram into the wall if i used outisde drifitng vehicles. but i prefer using outside-drifting vehicles on courses that are more open and do not have tight turns, such as DS yoshi falls, and GCN peach beach, or courses that if find better played with outside drifting vehicles, such as SNES ghost valley 2. in short, i dont base my type of drift off the character but rather off the vehicle + the course im going to play

not every track is delfino square but this can be done on other tracks like GCN dk mountain. falling off the ramps after the cannon and timing the wobbly bridge before the finish line just right will allow you to avoid POWs. (the latter is rather rare though)
