I’m Melisa! A mom of five children with only two left at home. I’ve been a wife, an ex-wife and a wife again. Two of my children have spectrum struggles. My oldest has ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and my youngest has SPD (sensory processing disorder). I am a stroke survivor and I love my life.
Erik here! I'm a husband, father, entrepreneur, videographer and content creator, editor and teacher. Melisa and I decided to take a leap of faith years ago when I quit my newspaper job to pursue building Waldorf Essentials. It’s a decision we've never regretted.

My girls graduated, but my youngest needed "pliable exhaustion" before we could start our lessons. So, we would go for a walk every day. The conversations they would have cracked me up. They would forget I was there. I treasure these memories I had with them.❤ Your parenting advice is always spot on.😊
Thank you! I so appreciate your kind words and love hearing others success stories. Thank you for sharing.
THIS IS SO HELPFUL!!! thank u!!
Glad to hear it!
Amen
Looks great! Ive been eyeing that cute mushroom gnome house for my kids. So cute
Thank you.
0:57 to 1:06 What did you say around this minute? I suspect that the subtitle is probably incorrect around this part. Thank you
Are you referring to when Melisa speaks about having "a million projects and grand ideas"? At 1:25 it says "glardness" in the closed captions. She is saying "own your "choleric-ness". Later it also spells choleric wrong again. We do not control the closed captions, TH-cam sets those up. Sorry about that. Feel free to email us if you have questions about temperament. Team@melisanielsen.com
I am so glad i listened to the very end. Love that the TCM practitioner told you that. I have moved all the way to a GAPS diet after Nourishing Traditions approach. As ever, i deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness, integrity, and willingness. So beautiful. Thrilled to see your physical condition improving!
Thank you ❤️
When i get us out of the house allot in one day it leaves no time for circle time, and lessons. How you do you fit all life stuff in when you get iut so much?
I always recommend tracking your actual rhythm to see the pockets in your day/week and where all your time is going. When was the last time you tracked your actual rhythm to create a new rhythm chart?
@@waldorfessentials I've tried several times but never make it a week. Our days change so much due to so many different things. This is what I really need help with

Mine started to realise that some of the magic is not there but I want to keep for my younger boy…how do you handle that…do you really say yes Santa is not real and fairies don’t exist to a 9 year old?
I've mentioned in some of my videos about the holidays and the "sugar plum fairy" during Halloween, the older ones become the magic keepers for the littles. Some 9 year olds still believe more than we think and will hop back and forth as they have younger siblings around. For the 9 year old change if the child is still around younger ones and engaging in imaginary play you will see them still experience the magic of childhood. A great question to ask them is "what do you think" but neither confirm or deny their response. If the child is determined to know the "truth" share with them the magic they felt and how now they can be a part of it with their younger sibling if they would like to.
Something I started doing a couple months ago was pack lunches for M-F and prep (wash, chop) veggies, make hardboiled eggs, muffins, granola in big 4-gallon batches (lasts several weeks in my house) cook up some potatoes, chia pudding so basically I only have to make dinner all week and most of the work is already done for that--just scoop out some onions here, some mushrooms there, etc and I have meals ready in 10-15 minutes. Lifesaver! 😊
That's a great plan you have going! Nice job!!
Love the excitement! But the information is lost in thier conversation. I am looking for real information I can use. I want to share as much as I can with a friend's children. Maybe hone in on some real usable information.

You are so welcome!
It kind of makes my head constantly spin when theres parts and pieces to the same block all over the place in the journal. If tbere was a way I could reorganize it myself that would help. But instead I don't even use these "week of:" sheets for planning my days. I go from the block planning to separating the next weekly pages out into dailies.
It's definitely a personal choice on how your planning layout looks and works best for you. With our planner there are lots of options and you can also make a big sheet of blank paper do the job as well! Hello! I have a lot of questions and I don't know where to start! I have an 11 year old girl, we are a homestead family, and I would like to know how much class time the child has per day. How is the methodology applied? I would like to know if the curriculum is secular, we are Noahide. And I have a lot of questions. I would like to know more about Waldorf education.
Hi, please email us at: team@melisanielsen.com to better help you and make sure your comment/messages don't get lost on other platforms. We look forward to hearing from you soon and helping you feel ready for the homeschool year.
There were no rinky-dink skinny crayons in Germany untill Crayola started to be a old there in very recent years. When I grew up in the 70s we used Stockmar and Pelikan crayon in Kindergarten and school. And yes they were both the Stockmar size. I tried Filana block crayons but I prefer the Stockmar as well. I bought the Stockmar ones for my kids, block and stick crayons.
Good crayons make all the difference right!
Your notebook is so beautiful 😍!

You got this mama!
I thought the alphabetical order didn't matter in Waldorf? Maybe I'm confused, I haven't looked at the revised edition of grade one yet.
You are correct the letters are not taught in a traditional abc order.
@@waldorfessentials good thing to know! I'll have one in first grade next year!
Third time teaching it ❤️
What I do, is I have two in the grades and a kinder. So there's enough block pages for each kid to have one section per month per block, even if it's a reoccurring block! So it'll start with the month we start, this year it's August, tab one is blue and is sectioned off for my 6th grader, block is laid out, materials, experiences, trips etc and the next page with the weeks I white it out and label them for weeks 1-4 in a month. We're doing five days a week this year and taking every tenth off so that rounds out to be every other Monday off and the end of the month is pretty open! So we can use that for trips, make up work, wrapping up, documentaries etc.
Sounds like a fabulous plan!
How far ahead do you gather resources, supplies and make artwork? 😊
Great question! This will very based on the amount of time you have available for planning, your temperament and how many kids you are planning for. When you have multiple children you can also keep in mind you can re use that artwork for the next child. Which grade(s) are you planning for?
@@waldorfessentials kindergarten 🤣
How do you establish routines with the older children who may be resistant to chores?
Hi, great question! How old are we referring to? What age range do you have in the home?
One brave parent. My husband committed suicide when our twins were born. What a selfish loaf 🍞
I'm so sorry you've had to experience this.
Absolutely!

Short but sweet. Great concise advice.
So happy you found this video helpful. We have lots more helpful tips on our social media here. instagram.com/waldorf_essentials/
I have found this video so immensely helpful. Thank you so much for posting it. I have recently discovered Waldorf and I am so sad I did not know about it sooner. I have a daughter who will start third grade this fall. I really want to put her in a Waldorf School but have some hesitations and concerns about whether or not it would be a good fit for her. She has struggled a bit academically in traditional school. I worry that if I put her in a Waldorf School she will feel even further behind because it will be so different to her. But I also want for her to develop a love for learning. She does not have that at her current school and very much struggles with anxiety regarding learning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated❤
So happy to hear you found this video helpful! Have you considered homeschooling her? We offer homeschooling independently with our Waldorf Essentials Curriculum. Our sister program Seasons of Seven provides you with a trained teacher to bring Waldorf education alive in your home. You can learn more about our homeschool curriculum here www.waldorfessentials.com You can learn more about Season of Seven Virtual Waldorf School here www.waldorfessentials.com Both of our programs offer unbeatable support to help your family thrive in your schooling of choice.
Melisa, Thank you so much for the reminder to have fun! Always take so much value from the wisdom you share! ❤
Thanks for being here with us! Hope you have a great remainder of your homeschool year.
Melissa I need your expertise. I have a 4 1/2 year old with ASD and a 2 1/2 year old with ASD. Both boys. One is a bit more severe than the other but I absolutely love the Waldorf philosophy and would just love for them to go to a Waldorf school but I’m scared of losing their services or for them to regress. I don’t know what to do.
Hi, have you thought about homeschooling them? Would you be able to keep their services?
This was the first video I have watched about Waldorf in the home. I would have appreciated some understanding of the philosophy sprinkled in this video as well to understand the purpose of fluff or general educational philosophy in a home setting. Do you have other videos that go a bit deeper to provide context?
How old is your child (ren)? This will help me direct you to the right material. Excited to hear you want to learn more!
@@waldorfessentials yes I have a 3 year old and 1 year old and we are going the homeschooling route. Thank you
Thank you for talking about this. It's important. These children are shaping their own personal character and we definitely need to be available to guide them. Otherwise, they'll be in danger of following the wrong lead.
You're welcome! So happy you found it helpful and you are doing the work too for your child.
@@waldorfessentials Absolutely. He is homeschooling with me and is doing great 👍 of course, he still has his struggles with growing up but he and I discuss life often and I really appreciate my husband working so hard so I can be here for him the moment he needs me.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of information I've been looking for and haven't been able to find. I'm wondering if it's because Waldorf is a patented method, unlike many other homeschooling methods. I'm currently in my first year of homeschooling using a Charlotte Mason approach, which i feel like is a great balance between some of the Waldorf concepts and a more classical or traditional method. But I'm curious to try a few weeks of Waldorf style lessons and see how it works for us. I've always thought that Waldorf was more difficult to implement and it seems like that is the case, but there are benefits in that as well!
Come join our Office Hours in March! We will take the difficulty out of the idea of Waldorf homeschooling and inspire you to try the full experience! www.waldorfessentials.com/support
I really appreciate the information cup metaphor and the reminder to be teachable.
So happy to hear! We are always here for you to reach out with questions.

Hi Melissa! I would love a video about how you fit in multiple main lessons and skills practice lessons (if you do them separately like in a Waldorf school) Also would love a hypothetical run down on how you would do say a two child family homeschool, for example how long would you spend on each child and would you do skills practice together or separate I'm a picture painted for me kind of girl (even if it's just an example) Thank you! Love your videos
