Sonny & Cher Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) Live In Las Vegas/1973 ℗ 1973 Geffen Records As a 19th year old boy Jeff was on tour 1973. with Sonny and Cher. Although he later claimed that he never did drum solo, this is probably only one (maybe we can call it mini drum solo) he ever did in concerts.

Many jobs in the music business require some soloing, if not a major part. If you can't solo, you aren't a full musician, esp in commercial music. Time/Groove are important but what are you going to do when the bandleader says, "drummer, take 3 whole choruses." ? Are you going to play the form or get lost or not even know what he is talking about. Yes, soloing is just as important as time keeping !!

@@luvbasses5487 I've always heard the story as Nick just couldn't get it. Now Waters' definition of that could be that Nick couldn't do it to his taste. THey needed to do it quickly due to studio restrictions, paid time etc. I think they were in France at the time. The point of this being special is that it is one of few (perhaps the only) examples of Jeff Porcaro playing a drum solo. He publicly stated that he was not that type of drummer. He would have been the first to admit he was not in the same league as Buddy technically. He was however considered one of the greatest recording drummers ever. He played on over 3000 sessions and is on hundreds of albums, including artists such as Steely Dan, Barbara Streisand, Paul McCartney, Sergio Mendes, Michael Jackson, Dire Straights, Larry Carlton ,(the list is exhaustive) as well as his own band Toto. I've been a drummer for 20+ years and I've never enjoyed drum solos. I just feel like the drum isn't an instrument designed for solos. It's designed to keep the beat, to create a groove, and to provide tasty fills occasionally. But solo,....no. After about 10 seconds,....boring!

They probably made Jeff do this, too, lol. I don't know, of course, but Jeff always stated that he never developed solos and frankly didn't like the sound of just him playing drums alone without an entire rhythm section. He didn't even have a drum kit in his home after he moved out of his parents house. I have heard recordings of him screwing around and he had chops but never had any interest in "woodshedding" (his term) solo routines. Plus, this is the early 70s and from what I have heard of drummers before the 80s and later, drum solos were usually imitations of Rich with lots of snare rudiments being the basis.

Jeff is one of my two favorite drummers. The other is Neil Peart. I love drum solos however it is not the element of drumming that gets you gigs or contributes to a band situation as a whole. Maybe Jeff was too nervous to solo in a live situation. But I believe he could have done an incredible job at it if he chose to. Stewart Copeland was another drummer that did not care for solos. He described them as a circus. What you heard here was not a full-blown solo per se. But I believe Jeff would have done it if he wanted to. R i p Jeff Porcaro
