Thanks so much for this! Important for analog Film

I'm pretty confused by this specific range of filters. I believe Ultra Contrast are supposed to boost contrast, not reduce it? 1/8 and 1/4 seemed to have minimal impact, and at 1:16 there is a definite LOSS of contrast when going from No Filter to using +2. So... if the Ultra Contrast filters are also Low Contrast filters... why is there a separate range of Low Contrast Tiffen Filters? What is the actual difference between Low Contrast and Ultra Contrast (from Tiffen)?
Ultra Contrast filters are for reducing contrast. They are a newer technology compared to the ones named low contrast.
notice a slight green colour cast on the face with the filter
It appears that the 2 is stronger than the 3.
Is it just me or does the BGG actually INCREASE sharpness? I'm looking at it because I don't like the idea of the "sparkle effect" of GG, but I don't know if that's really something you'd see in a 1/4 strength level.
This filter is reaaallly nice
How is this the distortion on this lens? What about the 29mm?
why I percive polarization of higlits?
I see that too, it makes her skin look worse with the filter on.
Thank you for showcasing the effect of Glimmerglass. Just want to confirm after watching both GG2 and GG3 that you showcased, the effect of GG2 is actually stronger than the 3?
Hey, there is a filter comparison tool at lensfilterlibrary.com that allows you to judge them closely side by side so you can see for yourself what you think. Let me know if this is any use!
@@rwpreisner Hey sorry for the late reply missed your reply the other day. Thanks for the useful website but I noticed the same thing, the bloom and filter strength appeared to be a lot stronger on the GG2 than the GG3.
The 1/8 to 1/2 did almost nothing, this one looks amazing
I find that with more filters than I'd expect. Sometimes filters seem to reduce in strength to my eye despite the numbers increasing. I don't think there is any correlation between the doubling of the number and any kind of exact science that results in the doubling of the filters effect.
This is a great video and a huge help thank you for posting it! I do have a question. @ 21 seconds in when you show the side by side, I noticed an real difference in the color saturation of the lips. Had the model removed her lip coloring at that point or did the filter desaturate the image?
No problem and great question. I think it might be a combination of both of your points as the "No Filter" and "Soft FX 3" close ups were shot some time apart. Further testing would be needed to be sure but I do suspect that her make up had worn off or was slightly changed as well as the filter affecting the colour.
@@rwpreisner Thank you again for the great information. I purchased a 72mm and 82mm for both of my sigma art lens. i will be using them on a project with more mature female talent. Thank you again.
Nice video
thanks for your work on these comparisons

My favourite diffusion filter. Thank you for your comparisons.
Thanks for the feedback :) check out lensfilterlibrary.com for more and a dual player to compare between the filters
Is BLACK Glimmer glas another version of simply Glimmer glas ? SAME OR DIFFERENT Product ?
They're different products, Black Glimmerglass is a new product from Tiffen
@@rwpreisner Thank You!
@@rwpreisner Do you know of a comparison place between the black and not-black glimmer glas versions (for focal lengths 35 until 105 in fullframe stills) ?
If you go to our filter and lens comparison website lensfilterlibrary.com/filterdp there is a side by side dual player (best viewed on desktop) where you can select both of those filters setup on a full frame cinema camera using 65mm and 100mm cinema lenses. They're not stills lenses but that setup has the same field of view for the 65mm and 100mm that could give you an idea. Hope that helps!@@AR-vf7vg
This might be my favorite. Thank you so much for all these comparisons!!
No problem! Im glad that it is useful for you :)
Thanks for these lens filter tests, very useful! Which strength of Black Glimmerglass would you recommend in between 1/4 and 1/2 for everyday photography, for portrait and candid shots, with subtle effect, for permanent attachment on 50mm and 85mm lenses? I have the normal GG strength 1 and find it at times a bit overpowering. Thanks!
Thanks. It looks to me that 1/4 might be sufficient for a subtle effect on normal 50mm mid tele 85mm
@arunr4103 yes I think 1/2 should be ok for 21mm for a subtle understated look. On wider lenses like 21mm strength 1 might still work though, for a moderate but still not too invasive look. It depends on the look you're after. As a rule of thumb, the longer the lens the stronger the effect will be. That is why I think 1/4 or 1/2 should be the sweet spot for 50mm and above for a subtle look, to maintain contrast and not over blooming highlights.
Thanks for the comment, I see you've had a good conversation to answer your question. Personally I don't like to permanently attach filters to lenses as I prefer to adapt the look of what I am shooting based on the content. It also depends which lens you start out with and what it looks like before any filtration is applied. There are a couple of schools of thought when it comes to rules for filters use that I'm aware of. Some go with the idea that on wider lenses you should use stronger filter grades and on longer lenses you should use weaker grades as a base concept. When I work as DP I tend to look more at shot sizes and what I'm trying to do with the filter without making any large or jarring jumps between shots. So for example, for a wide shot of a building I tend not to mind having a lighter grade of filtration to ensure I have the detail I'd like to see in that shot and for a close up of a persons face I'd be more likely to increase the strength of the filter. But in certain circumstances I might do the opposite depending upon the desired effects. Personally I'm not really a fan of rules with these things hence why i chose to make this library - so I could choose for myself how I might select filters, lenses and adapt my use methodology for each project. It's all down to personal preference I find, good luck with choosing!
@@rwpreisner many thanks for your comment and for the great diffusion filters library you built. Very useful
So for someone that’s just looking to do medium and close up portraits with a 50mm would you recommend the BGG1 or BGG1/2?
Hi, may I ask if it’s enough to get rid of moiré in-camera?
I think it'd have some kind of effect on it but it'd be something I'd test before going for as it's going to alter the overall look of your image. There are a few discussions online suggesting filters to help reduce the moiré effect such as the Tiffen HDTV FX and the Black Pro Mists.
Weird but the black glimmerglass makes the face/hair perceptually sharper
Hi, thanks for posting these. I noticed in your tests the 1/8 seems to be warmer and have more halation than the 1/4. Is this consistent with your experience?
Hi, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I haven't shot with these filters outside of this test but I suspect that they might have been mislabeled and that the 1/8 is in fact the 1/4 and vice versa. As we were working quickly through many filters this could have been the case. I will look into this as it does seem unusual. If you'd like to take a look at more filters and lens tests please check out lensfilterlibrary.com
This channel is so underrated it’s CRIMINAL!!! Bro, the work and researched you’re putting in should not only be applauded it should be shared by everyone who considers themselves a creative! Can’t speak for everyone else but you damn sure got a new subscriber in me!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for your kind words! You can check out more at www.lensfilterlibrary.com. I appreciate the feedback :)
Good stuff, thank you!
No worries!
Thank you. One thing I'm noticing in all of these videos is that all the diffusion filters make the model look sweaty/greasy compared to the unfiltered shot. I'm actually preferring the unfiltered shot for this sole reason. I want the model's skin to have a matte look, not shiny. The filter seems to be taking any tiny bit of shininess on her skin and exaggerating it. Any thoughts on this?
Interesting observation. It could also be due to inconsistencies with make up as we shot so much that there are slight differences in how much make up would be applied at any one time. The tests are meant as a guide but I'd recommend your own tests with matte make up to draw any conclusions for your own work if that is what you are going for. Besides this, the filters will alter our perception of the skin texture and how we see the highlights. And it is up to us and our personal preference whether we like the effect or not and if it is suitable for a particular project.
Thanks for this video!
No Worries! There are more at lensfilterlibrary.com!
How did you have access to this 4 months ago? On B&H they’re still pre-order….
I shot this at Panavision in London and they had them in...
@@rwpreisner word 👌🏼 There’s not much information on line about them but how would you compare their contrast and skin smoothing against a Black Pro Mist 1/8 or Black Satin-if you’ve used those as well. I just bought 5 of them since most of my lenses are all in use at once and I’m very curious to see if it’s subtle enough to be an always-on for a nice finish
@@jarrodbarkerI'd have to up against each other to give you a solid answer on that but I own 1/8th BPM and use that a lot for a very subtle softening of the image, usually just to take the edge off sharp lenses. It's very subtle. If you'd like to do your own comparisons there is a tool at lensfilterlibrary.com that allows you to compare these filter videos side by side so you can judge for yourself - just select "Lens Dual Player"
@@rwpreisner thanks!
@@rwpreisnerThis website is SUCH a great resource! Thank you for sharing!
Why in these tests does the no-filter always looks like it has less highlights on the face than the diffusion…
That might be due to slight inconsistencies in make up and shine levels on the model on the days we shot. Thanks for pointing that out, it is good to keep in mind when analysing the footage.
Great video. Thank you for the information. This helps me with my purchase.
That's great to hear! No problem :)
Thank you for this! Exactly the comparison I was looking for.
That's great to hear. There are more at lensfilterlibrary.com too if you need any more in future!
@@rwpreisner Yes I have the site bookmarked and use it often while deciding on a look! You are so kind with your time and effort to do this.
@@well5423That is good to hear! No problem, I thought I'd share my findings as well as making something useful for me too!
Thank you for these awesome tests! I have a question regarding skin specularity at 1:13 / 1:20 - is this "without diffusion" and "with diffusion" shot at a different time in the day? Or is this a true representation of dropping in the filter moments later? As this comparison looks as though the black Glimmerglass is making the skin look very shiny... thank you!
No problem, there was some time between the without diffusion and with diffusion it wasn't instantly afterwards unfortunately. We had to test a handful of without filters but couldn't do one for every single filter due to time restraints. I hope you find it useful!
@@rwpreisner Thank you!
thanks for this!
No worries! You can check out the filter dual player at lensfilterlibrary.com to compare all of the filters in the LFL
Did I miss where you mention what T-Stop this is at?
Hey! It's on the slate - 2.8-4 split
Hi Richard, what's your favourite strength for the SoftFX filters? I'm having some moire and aliasing issues with my Ronin 4D and instead of buying the $1500 DJI OLPF, I'm looking to try fix the issue with one of these SoftFX filters.
Hi, I've not much experience fixing moire and aliasing with filtration but from a creative standpoint I tend to prefer the lighter strengths in most of the filter sets I use so it doesn't overcook the image. If you're using SoftFX to try and solve a technical issue I'd see if you can test them before you buy and a lot of my suppliers would organise that for me if I asked them to. Or you could contact Tiffen directly to ask them if you could test. Good luck with solving the problem and let me know how you get on.
Thanks for this ❤
No problem! I hope it is useful!
You doing excellent work !
Thank you!
