Aussie Bush Pens & Stuff
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ก.ค. 2021
I am an Australian Woodturner who tries to display our Aussie Bush in pens and other wood turned products. Living in Central NSW and travelling right across the country I get to pick up pieces of timber from a wide range of places.

Woodturning a Pen. Aussie Red Mallee Burl Atrax Roller Ball
มุมมอง 3599 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I use one of my favourite timbers Australian Red Mallee Burl to wood turn an Atrax Roller Ball for a friend. The figure and grain in this pen is outstanding. I believe we Australians are extreamly lucky with the different timbers we are able to wood turn, and this is a prime example. Happy turning and shavings to the floor. DYI Collapsible Pen Display Stand for Markets, On The Cheap
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I give a quick run through on the cheap DYI Pen Display Stands I use for my Market Stall Setup. One of the big considerations for me is space, I can pack all my display props etc into 1 x 30L plastic tub as its mostly designed as flat pack.

very nice job. Something that I would not have thought of, thank you for the extra little knowledge that I will have to try here for one of my next pens.
Please do a full tutorial on this. It is one of the main reasons I got my lathe. I have a general plan, but would love to see one made fully
Thanks Gavin. The drilled dowels is a classy idea. I'll be copying that myself. Cheers.
I hate n words
Nice view Gavin and great result
Thanks Greg & yes the view is hard to take 😊
Looks like you use bits and pieces that you find in the paddock I have also used shot gun shells for various projects This is the best way to do it nothing like super hard red gum to turn All the best from Mackay QLD
PS I know that you were not Turing red gum I was looking at another video beforehand
Thanks Trevor, I do like using bits and pieces I find lying around, and as I travel for work a lot, I have stuff from all over the state. I do have a Red Gum piece lined up next to turn into a bottle opener. Its from an old railway sleeper, talk about hard :) Cheers Gavin Dubbo NSW
Thanks for posting this. I am going to do this. 👍
That's a real pretty pen my friend. 🖋️. I'm new to turning & enjoying & finding your videos very helpful 🏴
BAD BAD BAD IDEA! The steel in kitchen knives is not recommended for the tolerances required for turning wood. You are risking serious injury by using this hack. The blade could bend or shatter.
Love seeing my pen made from scratch. You are very talented. Love the pen, feels amazing to use and the weight of it is perfect! Thank you again. It looks beautiful with my red certificate folder!
My pleasure. Thank you for the kind words. I hope it helps with many happy memories.
Wow great, looking pen. Always enjoy your videos.
@@gezza169ify Thank you :)
I've been wanting to make one of these. Now I can. Thanks.
Very nice video, really enjoyed it.😀
Thank you for sharing
Love it.. I’ll do that.😊 But I’m not a tight arse! Not really. 😂
Great looking pens. Love youre youtube videos. Cheers
Glad you like them!, thank you for the support.
Mate this is perfect for what I need to display my pens this weekend. Your pen stand looks great, its simple and you explained it (and showed how) so perfectly! I've just subscribed to your channel, keep up the great work! 👍🏼
Thanks mate, means a lot, glad your getting something out of it and all the best for your markets :)
Your beads are beautiful! I was awarded my wood badge last Wednesday. Our GSL asked if she could drop by my Cub pack meeting to do a presentation, I thought she meant a presentation about an event or something but she meant presenting me with my wood beads which came through the mail from Gilwell (we're BSO so it takes us a bit longer to receive our mail from the UK than it takes for UK based Scouts).
G'day, sorry for taking so long to reply, I didnt get notified for some reason. Congratulations on being presented a great milestone. Also thank you for the kind comment on the finished beads :) Cheers Gavin
No worries! I really love the story behind your beads too :)
nice mate
Thanks 👍
Great stand mate👍🏻
Thanks 👍
ingenious.
Cheers, it does the job. 🙂
Good skill, nice ❤
Thank you 😊
Do you use any type of finish for the wood or do you leave it bare? I know a lot of people would take issue with putting a finish on something you're adding a flame to, but what if you didn't add it to the center portion?
Hi Robert No I don’t use finish on the whiskey smokers. I have considered either strait beeswax or mineral oil like you said just not on the centre portion, but I personally believe that would not look right. So no finish for this product.
Please don't use that again this song is made for memes
Great pen 👍🏻
Thank you, I enjoyed making it
That looks so cool. If I had that pen I would never use it😮
Cheers, they are hardy pens and last a lifetime
Beautiful pen!
Thank you very much :)
Seeing that RJB wood turner has inspired you so much I think that you should send it to him I have also been inspired by Bob and turn pens as well I am located in Mackay North Queensland Great to see a fellow Aussie using local timbers (got to love those hard woods)
Not a bad idea, thank you
found you LOL, good sellers at markets these are too
I'd never really had them on my table until recently, I'm finding they are great little impulse buys to help pay for the stall fees, as there is almost no cost except time.
@@aussiebushpensstuff i like to have a few "smalls" tops, keyrings, b dibbers and dippers they give turnover and tend to cover costs as you said
Great idea mate, l'm a tight arse. I will be making one for myself. Really enjoy your videos👍🏻
Thanks Gezza, while we could spend big $$$$, why do it if you don't have to. I personally am after functionality not flash stuff
i have subbed now
Appreciate that, hope you enjoy ☺️
that is so cool!
Thank you 😊

Great video, keen to know how you made that make shift parting tool please!
Awesome, I will get a quick how to up ASAP.
I’ve never even heard of silky oak before. Looks amazing. Nice work
Thank you, Southern Silky Oak, Grevillea Robusta, is common in Queensland & NSW here in Australia
Very nice mate. Silky is such a great timber.
Thank you! Yes it is, I really enjoy it & there is plenty around me.
Yer killin me here! How'd the Green and yellow blanks turn out?
Unfortunately the resin set in the cups, it was my first ever resin pouring attempt, so learnt from it. I am yet to remake those colours, but keen to give it a try when I have 5 min spare.
Very good! Thank you so much for showing us how you make pens like this.
No problems, I just enjoy doing what I do and sharing where I can. Thank you :)
Thank you for the great video. What is the name of the first chuck?
G'day Ray, thank you for the feedback :) The chuck is a Record Power SC1. I won this chuck in an online FB competition. Any normal chuck will do the job, you can use a smaller jaw set.
Nicely done. What kit was this?
Cheers Derek, the kit is an Atrax. I have also done it with a Sedona. next one is going to be big and chunky with a SN Gent kit.
This method is great, Thanks for the video.😀😀
Not a problem happy turning :)
Thanks for sharing and learned a lot from this video ... Cheers Tim
Thanks Tim, glad you enjoyed the video, Im still learning every day and just like to pass on my learnings :) Cheers Gavin
Nice one
Thank you :)
Nice mate. Silky is one of my favourite timbers to put on the lathe.
Its a very please timber isn't it. I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't react to it :)
congratulations....
Thank you :)
your method is wonderfull... thank u for sharing
More than happy to share the little I know
What other stuff do you make?
G'day SKS, besides pens, I make bowls, magic wands, spinning tops, decorations, rolling pins, foot massagers and so much more.
Thanks for asimple demo on CA finish
No problems :)
Nice job. Made me laugh as my dog gets covered in wood shavings as well.
My mate is never far from me, so yep, it happens a fair bit
Nice finish, really enjoyed watching your videos👍
Thanks Gezza, I just enjoy doing what I do.
Nice finish, will give it a try.
Have fun and enjoy the challenges :)
Many thank for the detailed explanation Looks fantastic Do you have a price for this pen?
For a pen like this I typically charge $100
