    I have had the original since the late 90s, but the tonearm was bad and I didn't use it for 20 years. I decided recently to revive it. I bought a new old stock 9cc carbon fibre tonearm, project bearing grease, belt, 15v power supply, and because of your video, the AT 6006R. Just finished setting it up today with a SoundSmith Otello cartridge and it works, looks and sounds great. Thanks.

    The grill is not original ............the original was in one piece . I found a mint pair for a very fair price and enjoy these speakers a lot .......like Maria Callas singing in my room and wanting to give her kiss after she stopped singing ... This speaker was engineered to have a big sound in a typical small British living room .....and it works out well this way.........the model one is my preference compared to so called later upgrades..............;it plays music coherent and without any hugh end listening fatigue ...........the bass rolls off earlier than a bass reflex but being a sealed bass load it continues to go deepr than a BR........... The better the amp and source the more joy it rings to the soul of music. Do a good job restoring it ........beware of very expensive foil capacitors , they tend to break the musical balance of the speaker because they have different electric parameters , ESR and inductive as well as favouring too much detail out of balance with the music ..... This speaker was still build when engineers measured but also LISTENED to their baby... They are able to transfer you to a concert hall.........;in your own home.......not many actual ( even high definition ) speakers can do that .

    • @HiFi-DIY
      @HiFi-DIY 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed the grill is not original, some previous owner have cut it down! What foil capacitors (brand/type/serie) did you use? The sound I amazing, however I will still remove some stuff....like the fuses and the protection circuit.

    • @frankgeeraerts6243
      @frankgeeraerts6243 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HiFi-DIY I leave the fuses with direct coupled amplifiers , unless they use OPT and or capacitive loading.........it's not worth the risk ! .one can use better fuses at the expense of byuing those The circuit /level/protecting ......;;;can be turned of with a switch....on/off . With film capacitors one will gain detail etc ...........BUT this speaker was VOICED with the original capacitors ........you will loose the voicing and the musical coherence of the speaker.........original components/capacitors /sets are available in the UK at Falcon Acoustics who still build the best version of the LS 3/5............they claim the same as I do . BUIT you can easily upgrade the wiring and the speaker post as well as resolder all solderpoints with good solder like AN or WBT silver ...NO ROHS SHJIT !!!! Curious about the follow up of your restoration .........beware of tutning this beautiful sounding speaker into an audiophile high end headache with listening fatigue instead of joy listening to music.. Have a nice day.

    • @HiFi-DIY
      @HiFi-DIY 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I would go for the Fifty/Fifty it is easier to service and if you make a variable negative it is perfect. The Marshall is more "hard" If you want to go with low volumes I highly recumbent a loadbox, the sweetest drive sound comes from the output tubes driven into clipping.

    Reviewed it 27/02/24. Very revealing of classical and acoustic material, with great separation and detail on cello, piano and guitar. I played Lutoslawski, Webern and Chinese Classical. When playing hip-hop (Masta Ace), the sampled bass was muddy on 'I Got Ta'..This track loops a James Brown original, on what can't have been great equipment..the vocals are good with the track illuminated by the insistent looping which the turntable doesn't miss. On such varied material, the turntable did well..a thumbs up!

      Yes, I found the issues. There was two. First I had a look at the ”large” Electrolytic capacitors where one looked bad. However I found that two of them had cold solder joints, but replaced them anyway as they were OLD. Then the lithium battery was faulty, and the battery holder needed some cleaning before inserting a new battery. Final point was a master reset and then all was fine!

I ended up letting go of it due to a ground loop problem I couldn't solve and traded them to a guy for 2 Marshall heads. One being a JCM800/2210 that I still own and love to this day.
