How I Learned Backcountry Skills In a Kitfox
The latest aviation trend is backcountry and STOL flying. Whether you fly for the
airlines or a 152, a lot of pilots dream about taking a plane into the Idaho or Alaskan wilderness.
It’s pure stick and rudder, by the seat of your pants flying. Here’s what it takes to enjoy the
experience while staying safe in an unforgiving environment. The key is training and taking baby
steps. Here are some of the lessons I learned in my Kitfox 8 years ago.

Backcountry Strips Snowed In? Try Ice Fishing
มุมมอง 3198 วันที่ผ่านมา
When the Idaho strips get snowed in, it’s time to think outside the box. Ice fishing is a great way to break up the winter blues. Thanks to Jeff Gordon of Cascade, Idaho for introducing me to a whole new way to enjoy winter. #cascade #cascadeidaho #icefishing #idahomountains #idaho #snowmobileidaho #snowmobile #idahofishing #lakefishing #fishing #idahotravel #outdoors #idahotravel #longvalley #...
If Mercedes Built a Gyroplane It Would Look & Fly Like a Cavalon Auto Gyro
มุมมอง 10K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
There is a new kid in town when it comes to gyroplanes. The German Cavalon Auto Gyro is a newly design Gyroplane with the latest innovations that take safety to a whole new level. The Cavalon is a certified aircraft. I saw this one at a local airshow and next thing I knew, the owner Blain Green took me for a ride that changed my mind about Gyroplanes. #autogyro #Cavalon #gyroplane #rotorcraft #...
Secret Backcountry Oasis in Idaho at the 45 Ranch
มุมมอง 4.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Backcountry pilots will be amazed at this secret location deep in the Owyhee Desert of Idaho known as the 45 Ranch. At has a fun approach, prime grass runway, camping, fishing and hunting. Plus, camping is free for a $100 annual fee thanks to The Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation for opening this to the public. #the45Ranch #45ranch #stol #kitfox #rans #backcountryflying #jimrichmondb...
Beautiful ✈️
THIS IS COOL! I want a ride.
We can arrange that very easily.
AMAZING!
Thank you!
Really nice machine!
It totally surprised me.
Where are those amazing mountains at where the gyroplane was flying ????
That's the Owyhee desert just southwest of Homedale, Idaho. If you take off from Homedale and fly direct to 28U you'll go right over them. It never gets old.
Great Video Roland!
Thank you Leann, I'm having fun making them.
Nice work, Roland!
I'm honored Dick, Thank you!
@ we need more of this kind of thing from highly experienced pilots in different aspects of aviation. It helps point out the important differences in backcountry flying that will improve safety.
@@dickwilliams4213 Your Backcountry Flying book is my bible.
Lets get this straight, "If Mercedes Built a Gyroplane" It would leak oil like a sieve and spend more time at the dealer getting fixed than in the air, such is the state of Mercedes these days.
I didn't know that. I was referring to the luxury aspect of Mercedes.
Nice video, would have been even better without the music.
Thanks for the input.
What possessed you to add the "music"?
It makes it fun to edit to. Sorry you don't like it.
By the way the Cavalon is both certified and kit, and with the certified you get the Garmin 3 axis autopilot if you want it.
Good to know. Thank you!
They were always very smooth if you did the balance and tracking properly. Likewise they were always safe when properly trained. I was a member of a gyro club for more than a decade. I watched and helped trained 100s of people I never do much as saw a single blade wrecked in training. Yes some people went on to do stupid things like fly through powerlines but no PIO no neg g all flying Bensen derived machines with no HS's. The simple message is get good training and ALL types are safe. Good to have reliable engines though just wish they were affordable
I think I've had too many hours behind airplanes to figure this one out. Training is so important. If handled right, it is rock solid. I just can't afford a new hobby.
A most excellent video indeed! This makes me want to get one of those big tire machines. It also makes me wish that summer was coming sooner!
Me too! Winter is great thru Christmas
Awesome video! Are you based in Idaho?
Thank you Bob. I keep my plane near Boise. We're spoiled out here for sure
I learned tons flying with you and Andy. Great video, bud.
Thanks Bart. It's an oldie for sure.
Great video!
Thanks Jason. When are we going to fly again?
Shame about the irritating music.
Finding the right music is probably one of the hardest parts of editing. Sorry about that.
@ No offence intended .
@@colinc.8742 We're good. Thanks for watching.
Airplanes, snowmobiles, fish, beautiful scenery AND live music! What could be better. Nicely done!
I just wish I would have caught a fish. Oh well, it was still better than a good day at work
Very nice.
Thank you!
Mercedes wouldn't have structural failures and kill people though
I thought they were just expensive to maintain.
A classy video
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
The new generation of gyroplanes are very cool. The ELA EVO is worth checking out as well. But I love the side by side of the Cavalon. Great video!!
Not only side by side, but very roomy. I'm 6'1" and the owner is 6'2" and we both fit without any issue
@@PlaneCrazyChannelFor sure. Planning to buy a Cavalon in the near future. Very exciting space in aviation right now
@@jeffswartwood7316 Did you end up buying a Cavalon?
@@jeffswartwood7316 It really is. Again, I was shocked by the quality and stability. I took a ride in a "gyrocopter" about 10 years ago. Ten minutes and I was ready to land.
Muy bueno Blain!! I want one!
Blain needs to be a CFI for these Gyroplanes
Absolutely a stunning autogyro!!!
It was refined and powerful. The manufacturer got it right
That’s an incredible auto gyro!
Thanks Jason. It surprised me in more ways than one.
You forgot to mention that the Jim Richmond foundation is raffling off Carbon Cub #1.
For sure. The raffle ends June 6, 2025. I'm going to get some tickets myself. If you want more info go to JRBAF.org for raffle rules. All the money will go to expand public backcountry aviation access. A great cause and a great plane.
Nice.
Thanks! It's a great place. I was pleasantly surprised.
Is this charted?
It doesn't have an airport designator yet. But the info is on their website: jrbaf.org Look for the 45 Ranch directions and it will give you the coordinates. Or you can also search the 45 Ranch Idaho
Yeah buddy!!!
Thanks, I've got so many ideas running around in my head.
As always, well done! All the best, Roland. Brian and Susan
Many thanks!
Great first video, Roland. Looking forward to many more. Cangrats on starting your channel.
Thanks so much!
Omg! So beautiful! I freaking love Idaho! It’s so underrated. I need to get my dad to fly me there.
It really is!
