    Another great presentation Blade. It’s sad to admit but with the help of your channel I’m finally, after 40ish years, putting the timeline of events and people together. So grateful for your channel and the wisdom that you share. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Blade!

    Thank you so much for this. I was orthodox from the time I was 8 until last year. This video was so validating. The feeling like I wasnt Jewish any more for not following their interpretation of Shabbat, the disengagment from secular social justic. All this stuff. You are awesome, thank you for posting.

    I feel like Orthodoxy has a tendency to be more concerned about the letter of the law than the spirit of it, especially when it comes to Shabbat. Like, the whole point is to rest and spend time with family, but you end up putting in way more effort just to avoid "working." Like, I get it if you want to shut off electronics and detox and focus on your community. But you can't even drive, or have your lights on, or cook, and you drive yourself and everyone else crazy following all these arbitrary ticky tack rules. It feels like it defeats the purpose of resting at some point.

    Hiya. I have a question... My, now deceased, husband's mother was a German Jew, born in the early 30's. So I'm sure you can imagine her childhood. So, he was Jewish. He was circumcized, and raised in the Jewish faith, until his mother passed away, when he was four. I am not Jewish. Our daughter is not considered Jewish. I understand why, but only in relation to religion. Isn't being Jewish an ethnicity, also? Didn't Hitler talk about nose length, and other physical characteristics, as being Jewish? Like blue eyes, blonde hair is Nordic. Red hair, Celtic. I also realise, believing anything he said is crazy, but i did/do think my husband and daughter both had/have the cutest Jewish noses. So, is my daughter in a purely ethnicity context, Jewish? Or at least 25%? I believe knowing your ethnicity is so important. Being adopted, I felt I missed out on that. I would like, for her, and my grandchildren to know theirs. I'd also like to point out, that many people told me not to tell others she was Jewish. To leave it alone, ignore, or forget about it. This disturbed me greatly. I have, and so has she, always been proud of her heritage (if she can claim it), and never hidden it. Maybe they were trying to protect her?

    I wonder why you chose the air force - that would have been interesting to hear about. In the UK, many people make that decision based on the roles which are open to them. I have fond memories of young Americans serving with the Peace Corps in Africa. As a parent, I think is a valuable experience for young people's development to spend a few years contributing to a movement which offers service to the wider public...

    Again, this is a very American way of approaching life... I'm wondering if the problem is that many Americans lack merely lack the self-discipline to take advantage of the freedoms that are available to them to improve their lives? Some people live lives where they have very little control over what happens to them - think of the position of most women in Afghanistan, or the civilians trapped in Gaza. Your advice is not so helpful for people who suffer clinical depression or other forms of mental illness. Perhaps we should consider more how we treat others - our actions may be the stumbling block which prevents others from blossoming?

  • @edelgyn2699
    @edelgyn2699 หลายเดือนก่อน

    😉 This is a very American view of life - that one's personal aspirations are shaped by ability/talent and should be realised. I was academically gifted and became a university lecturer, I was no more happier working in blue sky research than I was when I had jobs working as an unskilled manual labourer. My dreams have never been about my own fulfilment, but about helping to make the world a better place. I'm not advocating my own way of thinking, just pointing out that 'dreams' can mean different things to different people in different cultures.

    I don't recognise your understanding of 'Science' - talk with a few scientists if you get the opportunity. Regards the Torah containing wisdom, perhaps it's more the case that people can become spiritually aware (i.e. wise) using religious frameworks such as religious texts.

  • @edelgyn2699

    In the sense that we all die, I suppose our situation in life is temporary. To someone who is imprisoned or enslaved and who has no prospect of escaping their situation the advice is not so helpful, a coping mechanism might be more helpful?

  • @edelgyn2699
    @edelgyn2699 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You 'know' your ancestors once stood on Mt. Sinai (with Moses)? Where is your evidence for that? I suggest you believe that to be the case rather than know it to be the case. I've met Jews who regularly attend schul and yet admit they are atheists - they don't know G-d. Quaker's don't require their members to believe any set creed.

    I would disagree with you that Jewish people are an ethno-religious group - world Jewry includes people of various ethnicities. I think you could have dealt with this topic in a longer video and discussed the matter in more depth.

    That's such a deep and great talk. I'm french sefarad living in city there's only one synagogue that follow 'consistoire" way (kind of orthodoxy but less radical), but I'm following masorti rules and approach. What you describe about the dogmatism of reformed and the permanent change on orthoxed mvt is deeply true and can be extend to all ideology, religion, thinking movement. Each time you'll find these 2 patterns : reformists/revolutionnaries that became dogmatics and ultra conservative about the changes they made AND conservatives/orthodoxed/reactionaires that actually changed everything in the name of the tradition. As jews we beleive humanity as the freedom to choose and so the freedom to think. Since the end of the temple, we also all beleive that the divine retracts on himself and give space to humanity to work on its coninuous progress. Even haredim think the Torah belong to human, as to be interpreted and debated. But they don't reay apply this. The middle, rationalist conservative movement is more right imho
