A channel to show what I get up to in my Caterham 7 that I call Fern. This includes upgrades, new parts, track days, crashes, driving days, club days and much more. I don't think there is enough content about Caterham's from actual owners. There is lots of content of You Tubers hiring a Caterham for a week, but I use Fern as my daily car. I will show successes and failures generally and when doing upgrades to the car. I bought Fern in 2020 and she is a 2012 Caterham Supersport 140. Please subscribe 👍

Only came to check out the rwd mounted sigma, great stuff. When I put spark plugs back in I always smear a bit of copper ease on the threads, but then I'm not changing them every 6 months. 🤷 Also, little bit of advice, if your dipstick is getting blown out then you have breather issues. I wouldn't bother with the cable tie, then you'll find out sooner rather than later 🤷👍
Hi that's a good tip. I change the spark plugs every year. I do around 6k miles a year, but I bet they would be fine for 2 years if not more. I do it for piece of mind more than anything. I'd rather do preventative maintenance.
My brother has just bought a 360R. Next summer is going to be fun!! One trick I picked up early is really hard to stick to. Try not to smile. Bug squash on the teeth is nasty. But I can't help it. I always grin when I am in it.
It's one thing not to see you, small car and all, but they saw someone else stopped at the roundabout and didn't even slow down
Good job hitting 3 minutes. Next target, 2 minutes.
Hey thanks. It would be great to have a decent amount of tuition there.
Great stuff. Can we have a "diff noise test" video or have you already done one?

Hi Tony was this driving round in Australia? I've never heard that before. If anything dogs are scared because the car is loud in the UK.
no mate , just sitting at the lights in suburban melbourne...............always seemed to be lots of loose dogs around .................only happened a few times...............tony
Thanks James. I have just completed this on mine. Your video was very helpful in showing the process and inspired me to do the removal efit myself. One tip to anyone doing this: Remove the boot floor. Although its not actually necessary it does allow easier access for some steps and give better visualation. It also allowed me to refill the diff from above via one of the driveshaft holes.
Hey I'm glad this was helpful and great that you have your diff back in. I used a hand pump to fill the diff from the fill hole when it was back in. I guess removing the boot floor gives some more light as well.
Have you PPF the body and the nose cone? I am about to build my kit but wondering if I should do PPF first.
Hi congratulations on having your kit. I've only done the rear arches but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I know some owners that have ppf all over their car and it does a great job. I would think the nose would be difficult to do. If I had a brand spanking new caterham I think I would pay someone to ppf it all. Maybe put a post out on the fb groups to see other people's thoughts. There are kits for Caterhams. If you are a member of the caterham and lotus 7 club I think there is a discount for one company.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern Thanks for the quick response! I noticed most of the PPF kit are sold in UK. I'll think about some ways to put the PPF on .
Hi James, what poppers did you use to attach the central bracket and how did you attach them to the car?
Hi I did try poppers first but it wasn't as stable as the screws. What I do is after taking the windscreen off I unscrew the 2 poppers in the middle of the scuttle. Then put the aero screen on and I've drilled 2 holes in the center bracket, so I then screw the poppers to the top. It means that I can still use my phone mount and it also makes mine fit better. Takes about 1 minute longer to fit the aeroscreen, but for a better fit in my case. I've seen a load of caterhams on track days and none of the aero screens fit perfectly. I'm a massive fan of the clear meteor motorsport one compared to a solid black/carbon one.
Converse All-stars are good for cheap driving shoes
Hey yes that's a good shout. I do think the speed cats are alot better though personally, but they are a bit more money.

Hi Simon congratulations. Let me know what you think after you have had it done. You've seen the email address to contact on the other video where I have replied?
I also replaced the engine mounts on my Caterham. Your video was very helpful. Thank you very much!🔧🔩
Hey thanks for the comment. It's nice to know that my videos have been helpful.
I won..... amazing :-) Thanks James
hehe
Nice one James. The Westermann half doors (and matching tonneau if you can find one) are brilliant. I've had them on my car for over 15 years and they're just brilliant with an aero. The way they tuck behind the scuttle was also a selling point for me. The rear edges of mine tuck between the rear wing piping and the skin and my popper bases screw into the car through the half doors (they're a permanent feature on my car). With the tonneau as well you feel nice and enclosed, similar to a single seater.
Hey thanks for the comment. I didnt know there was a matching tonneau. I'll have to keep a look out for one of those. If you've not seen it already check out my video can I daily aero. I really like the westermann half doors and I'm so glad I bought them over others.
Interesting video for me. Im a petrolhead that suffers with acute anxiety and just sitting in that place in the countryside in my 7 would suit me for a while. Depressing music at the end though.
Hey yer I agree I like seeing the countryside rather than cities. It's just relaxing I think. When we did the NC500 that was the best for views. The views went on for days and there was something about the lochs which I found relaxing. Wales is also very good. Sorry you think my end music is depressing I quite like it.
Do you still use your sim rig? Can we get a new video on it?
What would you like the video to be about? What would you like to see in the video? I do still use it before track days when I have the time. I dont use it as much as I thought I would.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern You could show us your SimRig, show us what mod you use and how you think it compares to your real car. You could show us how you prepare for a track day, and then compare lap times in sim and in the real world. You could just show your rig. And tell us the technical specs of what you have. And maybe if you’re in the knowledge, what other stuff people could get. You could also make a video where you drive your mod on a mod track with normal roads, and compare a normal drive in sim and in real. If you enjoy your time in the Sim, make a video about why; maybe join a league like the Caterham 7, and show that. Or you can make a video about why you really don’t like the rig. 😅 I enjoy your other videos too,by the way.
@terjehelle thanks some good ideas there I'll see what I can do.

Love the popper idea, where did you get them?
Never mind. Found in the comments.
Hi sorry I've only just seen this. Glad you found your answer in the comments. If you have any questions just let me know.
I'm certainly envious, a caterham , a nice dry garage to keep it in and a decent tool chest to tinker with it to your heart's content 😁
Very useful. Only difference is I keep a spare clutch cable (one broke at Silverstone), instead of the screwdriver for the nose cone I have a large washer on my Caterham key ring. Haven’t dropped the spare wheel yet but never used it in many, many years of driving Caterhams. Following your video I plan to rationalise the tools I carry as I’m a little bit like “I’ll take this in case”. Definitely not adding lightness there. Good stuff
Hi Fern doesn't have a clutch cable or I would also have one in the boot. A very good shout though. Its easy to end up putting loads in the boot it's hard to know where to stop sometimes.
I would love to build a Caterham and it should be in a racing green with yellow nose
Hey. Yes I'd love to build one as well. I didnt build mine. That is definitely the classic look. There are lots with that colour scheme, but even so they are all still different. Loads of different options to have and different owners upgrades.
Just what I need. Thanks for doing this. Are your tools Halfords or sourced elsewhere. Just wanted to know if there is tolerance on the tray liners to use one’s own tools. Cheers
Hi thanks im glad it was useful. The halfords modular trays come with the foam trays which are lovely. You can buy foam to cut yourself from other companies. I might try this myself, but I'm not sure how easy it will be. The trays themselves have a mat at the bottom which stop tools moving around. I'm really impressed with it and the modular trays. Lots of my tools are from halfords. I like that you can buy sockets that have got lost and the lifetime guarantee.
Every man's dream... a full complement of tools, well organised. I am well behind!
Hey Bert. I've been wanting to buy this tool chest for a while, but couldn't justify it. When it was on sale plus another discount code it made it crazy cheap so I went for it. Lots more modular trays are on my wish list which I'll get over time. It will make doing jobs on Fern easier now as well.
Very good and informative video Thank you
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Hi James, great video, I’ve recently been driving with full windscreen and no doors and the swirling air inside the car can just be a bit much on a longer journey, I think this could be the solution I’m looking for. Aside from helmet lift reduction, do you notice a generally more stable environment inside wind wise? Also, would you be able to clip the door on from the inside once seated? I hate stepping on my seat and tend to go feet straight on the floor then lever myself in which wouldn’t be possible with the door in situ. Love the channel, keep the videos coming!
Hey thanks that's very kind. I don't know how people drive with the windscreen and no doors. I've only done it once and found it unbearable from around 60mph. Using aero is alot more stable. You can't use the full doors with aero so you would have to fit half doors. It would be possible to step over half doors straight to the floor if your legs are long enough. Depending on how you fit the half doors you could take them off, get in and then popper the half doors on.
I have a full hood with a zip-open rear window. I can't imagine any situation in which i would prefer a half hood.
Hi do you have a S3 or SV? I've heard about the zipped window but I don't own one and I've not tried one. I still think I'd struggle too much getting in. The easy in zips work great for me. The full hood I struggle to get in and it mists up. I guess that doesn't happen with the zip put rear window. Doesn't the ran come in the rear window though?
@@ACaterhamCalledFern S3. Year-1991 1700 Super Sprint. When I bought the Super Sprint, I did not realize the top had a zip window. Was thrilled. I put a cable tie through the zipper tab to make it easier to locate and use. Also, the doors fold. I can put each door into a huge pillowcase I bought online. Each door can be horsed through back window and the FIA rollbar into the boot. In fact the hood fits in there with the doors. (Doors came with mirrors, which I have removed. I have windscreen mirrors from Demon Tweaks in Wrexham.). Bottom line, I can carry all my rain gear aboard. I usually like to drive with the hood erected, as I have burn-and-peel Irish skin. I can still get in and out just fine at 74 years old. I did work to make the steering wheel removable, but usually I just leave the wheel on. Having already put on my driving shoes helps. I have no intention of driving in the rain with the back window open. I drove my 1979 (fixed rear window) in the rain and got by OK. My new car has the heated windscreen, which looks like a great idea.
Yes and soaks the contents of your boot which no longer has a the boot cover… cos the poppers are holding the hood on… the only time my full hood with zip out window ever gets used is when…. Oh wait…. No not even then… 😂
Do you actually daily this? Ie is it the only car in your household? So commuting year round? Weekly shop etc? I mean I’m looking to get into the world of Caterham and get my first but not sure I could have it as my only car!
Hi yes I daily it as its the only way I can afford it. We have 2 cars in the household, my wife's golf and Fern. I drive it in all weather apart from the worst of winter when its too sketchy for me. For about 2 months over winter when the worst of the grit is down I do winter jobs. The salt and grit is terrible for them. I do drive when the grit is down because i have to, but i try to stay away from the worst of it and the ice. We both hybrid work so over those 2 months we share the golf and we make compromises. Last winter I was still driving in december/January this year. Weekly shop, well we do online shopping, but I go to the supermarket yer as well as anywhere else I have to go. Check out my video can I daily aero. It comes with compromises for sure, but it's worth it. Where there's a will there's a way.
Да это удивительно)
A caterham does not have ABS and TC. Do you feel safe driving in the rain? Is there a different way you drive? Nvm you answered my question
Hi thanks for the question. Yep no driver aids at all which is what makes it so fun to drive. In the rain it can be a bit sketchy at times. I mainly drive slower and concentrate even more as Caterhams can bite you when you're not expecting it. By being prepared to drive in the rain you can concentrate more on driving, rather than concentrating on not getting wet.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern i did a tour of France with 2 1/2 days of massive showers, part on the motorway. For touring its important to have touring tires and adapt your speed accordingly. Because they are light there is an increased risk of aquaplaning but with cautiin its OK
I have an old 1700 crossflow. I have full weather and a tonneau cover. With plastic seats a quick summer shower I ignore and get damp, perhaps put one side of the tonneau on. I have road tyres so I just eased up on the right foot. I have a friend who has a "quick" 7 with barely legal track tyres. It is dangerous in the wet but each to his own.
@ianscott3180 yes I try not to use the half hood unless it's bad weather. It's all about being sensible in the rain. I totally understand why people don't drive in the rain.
Was this inspired by a wet run out on Saturday 😂 I used a Vax to remove the all water from my footwells. Just added a shower cap to my Christmas list.
Hi Johnathan. This was filmed before, but it does seem to fit in with the weather we have been getting recently hey. Long nose shower cap is ace. I use mine loads, more as a just in case it rains when parked at work. Definitely need to go back to gasoline juice. Mainly as I forgot to buy a sticker.
I am lucky to have the older style windscreen wiper switch. It has intermittent wiping, by switching it on and immediately off again. I understand the newer switches I heard no longer have that option, but I love it on mine! Totally agree with the SoftBits half hood with entry zippers. It is convenient to get in and out and well made. I never found a rain jacket to be necessary but a cloth for the drips definitely. In fact perhaps a towel, some water also gets in near the door hinges in bog downpours. I
Hi Bert. Intermittent wipers sound good. The slow speed on Fern seems too fast alot of the time.
Thought this was a brilliant video James. I learned loads and will get my supersport done too early in the new year as was advised. Thanks for sharing
Thanks I'm glad it was useful. I learnt loads when I went to Northampton Motorsport. I do currently have a free competition to have an alignment and corner weighting done if you haven't entered already. The staff at NM were great, made me feel at home and a big thanks to James who answered my questions. He was great on camera which made this video good I think. I'd like to do more videos like this. Little Fern handles so much better now I wish I'd done this as soon as I bought her.
Thanks James
No problem anytime 😊
James, out of interest do you know the difference in top speed between aero & standard screen?
Hi good question. That would depend on how much power you have as well. Fern has 140bhp and you can tell in top speed, but also more importantly acceleration. I can't give you any figures as I would have had to have driven a track with the screen and then again with the aero. I can tell you it feels alot different and the windscreen probably isn't the best for aerodynamics, but I'm not an expert. If you do track driving with the screen I would definitely advise for you to try aero on track so you can see what its like. You might even be able to borrow one off sometime.
Good video James - Although not a daily driver Ive run my Caterham with brookland 1/2 moons for the last 7 years only reverting to full windscreen for touring - must admit IMO you cant beat the open front and wind in the face - I favour flying hat and goggles as opposed to full helment - the few times I have put the windscreen back on the first few days it feels like a tin top in comparison - agree getting caught in the rain can be a pain - this years F&C run I was sheltering under a big Oak tree when going through Chapel for 45 mins or so, although gave me a chance to chat to people whilst they put their hoods up.
Hi thanks. Oh nice the Brookland half moons do look good on a Caterham. I bet that wasn't nice at the fish and chip run. We all got soacked I think. When we eventually stopped to put the hoods on it had stopped. As we were all close together there was no place to stop for us as it was all taken lol. I've never tried aero without a helmet because to be honest I'd be too worried. I'm glad I did this 2 weeks as I've always hated aero for the road. I definitely get it now, but for me aero is for the track only for how I use little Fern.
Both my CSRs have aero windscreens. Love it. Not exactly dailies but they are fun on a bun! Passengers go wild.
I was watching the IOM TT a couple of years ago, when Paul Jordan got hit by a bird... well, it's more accurate to say he hit the bird, at over 100mph... it smashed his visor and gave him a nasty gash under one eye and a lot of bruising. It was only sparrow-sized, too. I imagine hitting a Herring Gull, even at a much lower speed, would be pretty hellish. Something to bear in mind.
Hi that's a scary story was he alright afterwards? Yes I totally agree that leaf made me think alot more about safety. It made me think about stones and lots of things that could hit you. It's what has put me off aero before, plus I don't like wearing a helmet. Aero is great for the track, but for the road it's a windscreen for me.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern Paul was fine once he healed up. I don't think it's a very likely occurrence - I don't know anyone personally who has had a bird hit their windscreen - stones kicked up from other vehicles is probably more of a risk, and the visors are designed to take those without shattering. I reckon you've hit on a safe compromise; you're protected from the most likely risks, with a helmet, and anything worse than that would be bad whether you had a full screen and no helmet or the aero screen and a lid.
@gerryjamesedwards1227 that's good he is ok. Yer I agree it isn't a very likely occurrence, but these things happen. There is a risk to anything we do and we all know Caterhams aren't the safest vehicles as there arent any driver aids. This is what makes them fun and what they are. Saying that they are better than what I bet alot of people think. I've seen some crazy looking crashes where drivers have been OK after. It's good to be careful but like everything it all has to be weighed up or we wouldn't get out of bed in the morning. These freak things do happen though and it's good to be aware of them. I do try and take what steps I can to be as safe as I can. They are great little cars.
Im 6'1 and running Carbon aero. I can see my wheels fine but if I was shorter (which often wish I was in the 7 ha!) visibility would definitely be an issue.
Hi that's good to know. I guess it depends on alot of things like if you have lowered floors, what seats you have and general seating position as well. I used to have standard floors and lowered floors make me feel more connected with the car. Angle/height of the seat makes a difference as well. I do like the look of the carbon aero screens, but I wouldn't be able to see as much which I would find strange. I'm between 5'10 and 11
Not for me....
Hey Bert. You need to try one out on track it's great for track. Not for me on the road how I use little Fern though. It was a fun couple of weeks though and I enjoyed it alot more than I thought I would.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern I did a stint at Bedford with it, helmet on of course. Great experience, but you know me, I’m a tourer
@BERTVVANHORCK yer I agree great for the track. We will have to come on one of your tours they sound ace.
Nice video! Out of interest do you get your speedo in your video from gps or from fern? What do you use to add gps and speedo to your video? Thanks!
Hi thanks. GPS through the gopro at the moment. It's not very reliable though. It seems to be sods law alot of the time that the GPS hasn't worked properly on the gopro on my best lap. I would like to buy a GPS logger at some point. My friend brought his when he came to donny with me. You will see in a video coming soon some of the benefits of that.
So I tried reading vehicle speed from my sigma ecu but from what I've seen it's only get a sensor on the rear axle to the gearbox/speedo, and not to the ecu, but the duratec apparently has front sensor which connects to the ecu so I'm trying to find out if I can use the same with the sigma... Like you said, it's typical the lap you forget to record is the fastest.
@nickclapham3689 it is always the way. I have a gopro on Fern alot of the time. It's always a day when I don't have a camera that something interesting happens. Are you after GPS data to add to videos? I would think a data logger would be the beat way. Probably not the cheapest but probably the most reliable. When funds allow I'll buy one, but there is lots on my shopping list at the moment. The problem now is most things on the list are expensive. I mean £50 each if my wife is reading this 😆
@ACaterhamCalledFern 🤣 you never know who could be reading!! Yes of course! I just don't want to spend "all that £50" on something if I don't need to... although my ecu is locked so would probably need an ecu swap which kind of defeats the point... anyway it's mainly speed I'm looking for so I can compare laps. Steering angle and brake pressure would be awesome, but need to walk before I can run... Looking at a racebox mini for now to see how easy that is to match against video.
@nickclapham3689 the hardest part is syncing things together. Vbox looks like a good option. Looks like video and data all together, but not cheap. You get what you pay for I guess. I'm not sure how much track driving you have done. For me a gopro is enough at the moment as I'm not consistent enough at all. When I can get consistent then I guess it comes down to finer details. Just from the video and no GPS data I can see where I can improve at the moment. I think my donny video will be a good one. I think you will appreciate it.
If throttle cables fail (short life) check routing and try to get as smooth a route as possible . Also maybe work a graphite lube into it . Motorcycle cable lube block might make it easier to force lube in ... I have 60,ooo km use on a clutch cable same concept smooth route & lubed regularly .
Hi yes that's some good advice there. Funny how when something breaks you think more about it. I check mine regularly now.
Footware ... try Bowling shoes also. Easily found .
Hi I've not heard of using those, but whatever works and is narrow enough.
I took mine off and put the normal windscreen. No comparison for daily drive. Also, wearing a helmet on normal roads, the kids love it, but everyone else stares at you as if you were an eccentric so and so... :)
Hi yes I need a windscreen for how I use Fern. It was fun though. I was surprised how much more vulnerable i felt with aero instead if the windscreen. Aero for the track though 100%. I know what you mean about people thinking you are a bit mad. When I turned up to work with aero people thought I was more mad than usual 😆
I applaud your bravery. Keep it up or down whichever best suits you. To daily a Caterham is to be admired / envied. Well done.
Thanks it's the only way I can afford her. A windscreen definitely suits me best for how I use Fern. This video happened by accident, but I'm glad it did. It's made me like the aero screen more, but for me the aero screen is for the track. Saying that since this video I've had a track day at donny and I had the aero screen on for another week as I didn't have time to change it back. The rain was not fun though surprisingly.
Another great video, James. I had 6” front and rear on my last car and have 8” on my current one (Sigma). I know exactly what you mean the car seems so nicely balanced on 6”. Whether than means a faster lap, I am unsure but it about the fun. My next set will be R888R which might be a nice compromise with 185 fronts and 205 (instead of 215) rears.
That would be a good comparison swapping 6s and 8s on the day. I dont think I'm consistent enough, but I know someone that is. My special guest at Donny could help I'm sure. From what I've read you will have to bend the wingstays when switching to toyos. I wish Nova would let us know what they were doing.
@@ACaterhamCalledFernI didn’t need to bend the stays on my last car with R888Rs and this one looks like it will be ok too. Because they are a different size to Avons it means tweaking the setup. I too hope that Nova continue the ZZS production.
@stevehoward314 oh that's interesting. Which do you prefer? Or is it too early to say?
@@ACaterhamCalledFern I prefer ZZS but R888Rs are good. For a mix of road and track, dry and wet I really like ZZS. ZZS are more expensive but lasted longer than R888R on my car.
@stevehoward314 my current set even though the wheels are a mish mash will last me till the end of the year if not longer I'm sure. I've also got 4 new zzs tyres all 6 inch so I should be ok for next year if not longer. I guess it depends how many track days I can afford 😆
Just love the English country roads. More exciting than our Aussie back roads. Try the angled bezels for the left side gauges and red/white stripes on the tacho for gear shift marks.
Hi the roads in Wales are rather good. So far the best roads I've driven have been in Scotland when we did the nc500. There is a red shift light which is between the speedo and rev counter to change gear. You can buy shift lights that you attach to the scuttle which I might get at some point. I think all of the guages you can see well.
Did you have the LSD for your lap last year James?
Hi Darren. Good point no I was open diff. There was quite a few changes for the better. At donny my friend brought his data logger with him. It's great to compare laps. It's on the shopping list. I could put them side by side to see where the gains are.
One question about changing the size of your wheels & tyres: does that not affect the calibration of the speedo? The original owner of my Caterham had fitted smaller diameter tyres at first, but then switched to the ones I have been using since (about 6% larger diameter). A year or so after I bought it, I discovered my speedo reads about 5mph too low, which I reckon is down to the change in wheel diameter. It also means I have to be extra careful when driving past a speed camera!!! It may be worth checking the calibration of your speedo, although it's likely to read higher with the smaller wheels.
Hi yes the speedo reads higher and it did a bit before, so it's even more out. I'll hopefully fix it at some point.
You could probably go through anything with the full hood on, and I find that the best comfort is with the rear window kept open 😊
My window doesn't open unfortunately, but I'm really not a fan of the full hood. Half hood is alot mote comfortable and probably simular to having the window unzipped if you have that one.
