How to make a generative MIDI sequencer in TouchDesigner
I was finally able to find the 5 or so hours I need to shoot and edit a tutorial so here it is! Make your own generative MIDI sequencer in TouchDesigner. I advise you to get familiar with the particular MIDI instrument your using because I may not be able to help you on how to set up your own instrument! Personally I'm using Tennage Engineering's OP-XY that was sent to me to help me create thes...
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 18
Here's my second real jam with the OP-XY, I've getting to know it better although I still have so much to learn, it's really exciting :) This one is centered around experimenting with the tape. with trig probabilities and step components on the tape sequence I have some fun glitchy effects, only the tape goes through effect 1 set on Lofi Also I was sent this OP-XY by TE without any obligation t...
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 15
Just wow, I've never thought I'd get to say that one day but I was sent this OP-XY without being asked anything, an enormous Thanks to Teenage Engineering especially Tobias! This is day one of trying it and I'm hooked, still so much to learn though
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 13
Today I was working on a collab so I couldn't disclose what it'll look like, it's based on my last sequencer with an artist I love but we had bigger ideas than my first iteration. Here is nonetheless a peek at the sound I created for this first try. The sound is sequenced from touchdesigner to Korg NTS-1 mk2 via MIDI USB
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 12
Today I had to complete my discord's challenge as well as the jam so I decided to add a musical part to the challenge. It's based on bouncing balls that make a sound when they collide with the ground and can pe paused and rotated matrix style
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 10
Today we organise an live modular event with RiCO collective, so I took the KO II to try and compose something on the spot, this is it! Recorded in backstage with the phone mic! I tried to get the KO in the field but missed, sorry!
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 9
Day 9 of Jamuary, another VCV patch as I was not in the studio! I got back into my old workflow before I had a nerdseq: using random voltages in 16th while a slower random value offsets the sequence.
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 8
Back at more traditionnal jams after those two days, here is another VCV jam, based around my beloved Harmonaig. I had it in hardware and sold it because honestly fuck doing polyphony with multiple oscillators in hardware, but it was so nice to use! I'm glad I can still use it this way :)
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 7
For the same reason as yesterday (doing live visuals for Valmont at La boule noire in Paris) I wasn't able to jam with synths, so I did a field recording in Paris St Lazare
JAMUARY 2025 DAY 6

Trop bien, merci bcp !!
Avec plaisir!!
Really nice effect

Cool. What sequencer are you using?
@@MichaelMKM here the sequencer is Nerdseq by XOR electronics
Thank you! I just wanted a generative sequencer for my NTS-1. Great work!
@@4B87 that works really well with NTS-1 I tested with mine :)
Amazing work
Great stuff! Learned a lot

Very helpful! I appreciate the video!
@@_pixelpicnic thank you for the feedback!!
Dope jam!
Ooooh thanks Luke!
Nice to hear such a pleasant song sketch using more or less compact number of modules - looks like experience with hardware helps you not to go wild with scale.
@@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333 yes for sure! I limit the number of modules I have and try to not create a big orchestra but maximise the impact of the few voices I use!
Great!
Sounds great! What is that lead synth sound?
@@jaygregory8219 thank you so much! This was actually the starting point of the patch! It's just Odessa from XAOC with some enveloppes!
bro is pulling up with a different talent every day. gotta love that snare sound

the only thing better than the MFX is 4 of them!!! love the vibes

absolutly love that phasy bass sound. its so écologique ✨

Great tutorial thanks for sharing
@@JBroadway thank you for checking it out!
Wow.new exciting tutorial...thanks for sharing🎉
Thanks a lot!! Can't wait to build on this and share the exciting things I've been researching!

ok here we go this guy fucks. are you using like es9 or midi or osc to send info to TD?
I'm a bit late to the party, but what a cool idea! I'm waiting for my Nerdseq to arrive. I actually got it to be able to do more intentional composing, but I'm very interested in its generative capabilities as well. Thanks for the inspiration!
Well the good news is you're not late but perfectly in time for firmware 2.0, in which the generative possibilities are just endless compared to this little hack :)
@@Neurotypique Yeah I saw that 2.0 just came out! I would be super interested in seeing you do another generative video with the Nerdseq using some of the new capabilities. I'm still working my way through the new manual 😬
@@SoundStricker awesome, the manual is such a valuable resource! Well I'll try to fully wrap my head around it and post something!
Sublime comme toujours
Yay my ears are bleeding
Fun fact when I played it live my first word afterward was to apologise for my grandpa's earing aid in the audience 🥲
Content de découvrir ta chaîne ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lovely work on this Neuro !
Thanks a lot!!
Using the options will open it up a great deal and for percussive use I recommend clocking the slices . Clocks make it very percussive and a vca can trim off whats uneeded as can a filter... which I see you have down. .. 90%of people who have this module cannot figure out how to apply ...I can tell who has read the manual which unfolds it and who hasn't..it does have to be accounted for as an entire instrument and not an effect... its very much like when fm synthesis was introduced... I use alot of spectral modules.... I tend to approach it like the Odessa module by xoac ... at least somewhat from a cognitive level...or better yet Cecilia by olivier .
Definitely, this was from some time ago and I have definitely come a long way with it since. It's still a staple in my system and my last liveset is entirely centered around it. It's really necessary to read the manual and dive back to it every now and then if you really want to get the most of it. I don't know about you but I would really love to be able to modulate WARP and presets via CV (saved spectra would be cool too but definitely not the feature I want the most). It's funny enough you mentioned Odessa cause that's exactly what I'm using it for these days, panharmonium is unapologetically digital and doing an incredible job at those textures.
@@Neurotypique I thought about making a cheat sheet so people wouldn't just buy it and neglect it which is horrific.... but my own approach would be a driving factor and I dont want to impose that perspective on others..I mention Odessa because of the overt FFT techniques... I actually use two... and tend to focus on the slicing and think of the input as like either a processing wavetable or as opposed to a resynthesis engine... warp is absolutely important.... the way I tend to do things is write a song and record it in long stems that need very little work.... to avoid the garbage in element I have some extremely dense constructions.... so running through sampling each bit is a pain but it can also result in happy accidents.....so on some of the things I do I use two panharmoniums with the same philosophy but I will change the one to hanning and leave the alone to some extent and still clock the slices on both one with higher frequencies as let's say upper midrange frequencies and the other as a driving low mid percussive element..using the pulsar23 as a main drumsource on one side....great advice I forgot If you don't already know to change the glassy metallic element of spectral modules use a wavefolder afterword in your chain .... it is another route for more dynamic modulation and seems to work for FM and spectral modules. I threw as many varied techniques in here to attempt to help you on the same journey I'm on. 😀 I'm very open and into sound design without secret formulas
@@corticallarvae panharmonium is really overlooked by some people and I can see how you can buy it and feel underwhelmed if you didn't put the hours learning it through and through. Thanks for sharing those tips :)
Very nice jam! Although it sounded quite planned at times - what's your take on jams? Do you have some prepared things that you want to try out during the performance or do you just go by feeling?
Thank you very much! Well my take on jams is I jam for 2 or 3 hours and shoot one of these videos that are more of a jam "rendition". I use a tracker as my sequencer, which limits the amount of sequencing I can improvise, but I play with launching sequences, muting, unmuting, tweaking parameters by feeling :)
Belle modular synthétique 😬

Love it bursting into acid, great stuff
Thank you Max! We always end up making things together that neither of us would do separately and that's fun for us as well :D
