2nd best version of all time, Jesse Martin is unbeatable but this man Brandon killed this version. Its a shame they didnt air this version, the version they had in the live was no were near as good as this. Brandon and Vanessa carried this live, for an event of this magnitude they should have casted it better especially when it came to vocal abilities across the board
Michael McElroy from the final cast of RENT back in 2008 deserves a mention as well. Don't know if you've seen "Rent Filmed Live on Broadway," but his performance was (in my opinion of course) the most powerful and moving rendition of this song I've ever heard. Rewatching this just makes clear how absolutely absurd it was to think that Meryl Streep could fill this role. No offense to Meryl Streep, but you need to be a singer to perform this song.
Meryl is a singer. She’s classically trained. She sang the best she has ever sung, she did fill the role. So this is insulting to her.

@@freya6307 so this was actually live in front of an audience on the day of the concert. The version that was aired on TV that night was the dress rehearsal because Roger broke his foot and the end of the rehearsal I belive the night before. There are clips of it on TH-cam with Roger wheeling himself around in a wheelchair. Everyone was saying they should've aired this version instead.
