TONEX ONE: Real Time Model / Preset Testing with ToneX Software
The biggest issues with the ToneX One pedal are almost entirely related to the TONEX software. The thing that bothered us the most when we started exploring was that you can't really preview / do a real time test of the tone models and presets.
We were using the ToneX One in the FX loop of a tube amp, so we wanted to hear how it sounded with the power amp and cab. Using headphones would not have worked to know what it actually sounded like.
The problem we faced was that the pedal would pass and process the signal while acting as an audio interface for in and out. So the amp would get the sound of the model set up on the pedal, while the ToneX software would also get it, process it through the selected tone model, and then send it through the pedal to the amp. You would hear everything stacked - gain, reverb, compression... If you have to use a large buffer size, you would even get a kind of delay effect, because the PC would add a noticeable latency to that signal, while the signal on the pedal wouldn't be affected by it.
Your only solution would be to download it, create a preset or directly put the model oh the pedal and then try it on the pedal itself, which is incredibly cumbersome. Eventually we found a workaround that we can live with, but it is still not perfect. This tutorial video shows how we use it now!

    Rounded necks and frets...nice feature. Polished and MIM? Expectations? Now, now, my friend.... Intonation???!!! Oh boy..... Thank you so much for your "fixing" a new guitar comment. Beginners have enough challenges to deal with, and many buy MIMs. Also customer service issues. Save some more money and invest in a good guitar as opposed to fixing a new one. My experience only... but... Mexico did not just mess this up this time only...again, in MY experience. If need be MIM? Buy from Sweetwater and ask them to especially look it over given these issues.

      Unfortunately, we don't have Sweetwater in Europe. But it's usually no problem to return a guitar. Even better - try the guitar first hand in a shop. Unfortunately, also MIA Fenders have imperfections, so I wouldn't put all the blame on the guitar being made in Mexico. Cheers, Lukas

    Very interesting. You may have mentioned this and I missed it, but with so many volume pots, won't it load the signal and cause mud or loss of top end when you turn the master volume down? I didn't see you using a treble bleed. Older Gretsch guitars were known to have this problem for example.

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a good point, but in this case it is not this much of a problem as it is wired 50s style and not "modern". The 50s does not darken your sound if you reduce the volume, but you reduce volume slightly when turning down the tone. Treble bleeds are only used with modern style tone control wirings. The interaction between volume and tone is a little different on both styles. We have a demo of the guitar with this wiring also on our channel, it's linked in the description. You can hear there for yourself and decide if you prefer to go with a modern style master tone/volume setup + treble bleed. Imho it's not necessary. Cheers, Martin

    • @ltvddvtl
      @ltvddvtl 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LMGuitarCorner I see. Would it change for example if it was like the Gretsch G5620, which has 2 volumes, 2 tones and a master volume on top? Meaning 5 knobs. Basically a Gibson set up with a master volume. Would 50s wiring still be enough to avoid darkening of the sound, or would a treble bleed on the master volume then be recommended? Or would a 1 meg pot make a difference?

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ltvddvtl I haven't tried that, so I'm not 100% sure on it, but I went over it in my head, and it probably depends on how you wire the master volume there. If you just go to the middle pin of it, and one outside pin to ground, I would assume, that it does not affect the tone, as it is essentially just reducing your pickup volume value with the resistance in parallel. However, then it would interact a lot with both volume controls again, and both might have other sweeps, depending on their set value. Not sure how controlable that is, it could produce some very cool tonal options, as the mix of both PUs may change from one level to another. If you place it in the "regular" volume setting with an outside pin as input, middle as out and the other outside pin to ground, you will have your master connected in modern style relation to your tone controls. In that case, you may want a treble bleed, as the master most certainly will darken the sound when reducing the volume. A 1meg would make a difference, yes. Especially in that setup I would assume it would be a good idea for the master volume regardless of treble bleed or not. If I would do such a wiring, I would probably opt for one. I would also order the parts for the treble bleed as well and see how I like it without first, and if necessary, add the treble bleed to the master later. Cheers, Martin

    • @ltvddvtl
      @ltvddvtl 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LMGuitarCorner Wow, you really know your stuff. :) It is normally done as you described last. Input coming from the middle pin of the switch into the out pin on the MV. Output going from the middle pin of the MV out to the output jack. The other out pin of the MV to ground. So a 1 meg pot could indeed solve the problem? But 1 meg only for the master volume right? The other 4 pots could stay 500K? For treble bleed would you opt for a single cap or cap+resistor? If so, in parallel or in series? Any recommendations for values if pickups are Gibson 57 Classics on a semi-hollow like your guitar there? :)

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ltvddvtl Thanks, I went to a special school for electronics and technical information technology here in Austria where I finished with a degree which is about the same level as a bachelor. But I have to admit, I forgot most of it, as I'm now a software developer for 17 years and haven't used much of the other stuff ever since. But these things are easy in comparison to what I had to do back then. ;) To your questions. I would only use a 1meg on the master volume, the others I would keep at 500k. It would not necessarily solve the problem, but you would make everything brighter, yet you would still have the tone drop off on reduced volume. I have to be honest, I don't have much experience with treble bleeds and haven't installed any in my guitars. I usually go for the 50s wiring, because the interaction in the middle position is just great. If I didn't go that route, I wanted the drop off in tone when reducing the volume. I would then setup my sound for rhythm, so it is not muddy in that position, to then take advantage of getting brighter and more cutting when turning up the volume for leads. As I can't give you any tips from experience, I can just tell you what I'd do in your case, and that's experimenting. I would buy a couple of resistors together with the cap and try it. You can try your circuit with it being outside of the guitar, so I would then check what I like before reinserting the harness and use that. Classic 57s are great PUs, I love them. Got them in my 335s, will insert them in the kit I'm building for my daughter and I also have them in my PRS style kit build. Cheers, Martin

    As noted in the video, the best of three Martins was selected for the comparison. I compared three Larrivee D03s some years ago, and one was definitely better than the other two. Also noted, the Larrivee will improve with age. Also noted, different scale lengths. All these will make the comparison one of “apples and oranges” to some extent, but it is nevertheless interesting to listen to the difference in sound. Twenty-four years ago, when I purchased that Larrivee, money was a limiting factor in my choice, and I fe😂t that , in my price range, I could get a better guitar in a Larrivee. I still have that guitar, and don’t regret my choice. I enjoyed the video, thanks.

      There is not much of a difference. There is a little more top end, but also bottom end which make them not sound brighter. I don't find it worth changing these speakers. However, I had to replace mine with something, as mine didn't sound anymore like Lukas'. They were a lot more dull. Compared to those, it was a huge upgrade. Cheers, Martin

    Could you put FX pedal in the bridge?

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not quite sure what your intention with that would be. What do you have in mind? Some pedals might cause a phase inversion or, in the case of digital pedals, also a phase shift. It would be essentially going with a Y cable/pedal with one out into one input of the amp and with the other output into the pedal and from there on into the other input. You can try it, but it might not sound good. Cheers, Martin

    I’ve had my jr since they first came out I did a low setup on it added a Tusq nut and bridge pins. The sound keeps getting better the more I play it. It stays in perfect tune and action has never moved. I always get compliments people usually say I wish I could afford one of those Martins but can’t justify 4 grand. When I tell them it’s around 600 bucks there floored.

    Brilliant! You’ve solve the secrets of the universe, thanks! I will also use this trick to turn off the ToneX pedal and let the IR200 or HXS provide the amp tones without multiple amps running over each other. Although sounds sweet with the JC120 and IR paired with the ToneX or HXS… kind of a sweetener to the tone :)

    Guys the actions go all the way down to 2.0mm at the low E 12th fret. All you need for this is to use correct strings (NOT EJ45's) that have 14.5+ lbs of tension on all strings especially the G. Best ones imo Hannabach 815 Silver Specials red package. Mine shipped at 3.0mm so just shave the saddle with sandpaper until you get there and if you go to far you can prop it back up with a sliver of a business card but playing it at 2.8mm is not going to be realistic when you play anything advanced.

    Came across this video because I'm in the market for a meteora after trying one at Fender's flagship store in Tokyo. Fell instantly in love with it. The one I played had pretty much flawless quality, but QC issues for a product always just make it a dice roll. I bought an American Professional II telecaster last year after trying one at a music shop, but the setup was abysmal- playing the high strings at higher frets, they regularly catch on something so when I'm going for epic bends they randomly cut out. Not something you want on a $2000 guitar. I've always been a fender fan, but I'm done buying new fenders until they fix their QC issues.

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you purchase the Am Pro II Tele online after trying one in a shop? I guess from what you described you returned it, right? 'try before you buy' is priority with Fenders these days, or at least buy it online at a shop with a good return policy. I haven't played any new Fenders in recent years, but I hope they managed to step up QC. Cheers, Lukas

      @@LMGuitarCorner I bought the one at the music shop, and it was great at first but after a few months it really didn't hold up. And as I moved out of my home country since then, I'm working with what I got. I'm planning on taking it to a tech to get a proper look at it and fix it up. Not something I should have to do with a guitar supposedly of this caliber though, not so soon after purchase

      Thanks Chris, no need to apologize. We appreciate every time you can make it, but never expect it. We know that we are not streaming during an ideal time for you guys in the US. I'm not sure how many videos there will be of that build. It will be my son who's building it, and I don't want to put him on social media. Maybe some work where I can avoid showing his face or maybe some kind of slide show with a quick overdub once it's finished. Keeping his face out of the picture is easier when taking photos instead of filming. Anyway, don't expect too much content from this one. Cheers, Martin
