    I saw a small bird this morning that I first thought was a yellow finch but then I noticed it had a fairly large collar or bib. I'd never seen that in Western North Carolina. Your video makes me think it may be a warbler of some kind. Is that possible in my part of the country?

    • @absorbed-in-nature
      @absorbed-in-nature 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, indeed! There are over 20 warblers in your area. They are all heading south for the winter into Mexico or Central America. Based on your description I wonder if it is Hooded warbler, but common yellowthroat, black-throat green warbler, and others may also fit your description.

    Outside my apt, the one tree in front of my building, 20' away from my balcony a red tail was just sitting there, almost motionless for over an hour, a squirrel was 5' away on the same tree, almost daring the hawk, then the hawk dives down and comes up with a rat, I was shocked, during the day, I'd never seen a rat, I guess hawks like rats better than squirrels, and squirrels are brave.

    Sitting in my mom’s kitchen in Apple Valley, CA my family and I loved watching roadrunners in the desert backyard. One day we observed a roadrunner being attacked by a large raven. Instead of running away, the roadrunner dropped to the ground like he was dead. However, when the raven flew away he popped up and went his merry way. He played possum. Is that a quality all roadrunners possess?

    • @absorbed-in-nature
      @absorbed-in-nature 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow! I’ve never heard of such a thing in all my research! 😲 I’m not sure why the raven would leave after “killing” the roadrunner. I mean, they eat carrion too. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.

    I have redhead, eastern, and downy on my feeders all summer. And as my hummingbirds are already becoming sparse in late August here in Massachusetts, I continue to enjoy the woodpecker’s going from suet cakes I make to the sugar water. Just a hint if you make your own suet cakes, I buy the freeze dried fly larvae from Amazon, and sub it into the recipe. They rehydrate a bit in the melting lard, and EVERYONE loves these cakes

    Another interesting fact about California Towhees. When I owned land up in Anza California and started planting my garden, I discovered it was the Towhess who were hopping down the furrows and digging out my Sweet Corn seeds. They would wait for the first pin shaped leaves to break the surface and somehow understood that a sweet juicy kernel was below. I was always so bugged at them for that. 🙄🤣

    I’ve had nesting Phoebes at my house for years now. They used to nest under the eve of my front stoop, but we closed that in and they moved to under the eaves of my screen porch. One of them sits on the railing of my deck for hours, flicking its tail and giving its little chip call. I can’t really tell if there are eggs or nestlings in the nest, but one year when they nested on my front stoop I was standing there when the babies fledged. Quite an experience to have that explosion of wings over my head and watch them take off for nearby trees! I really enjoyed your informative video.

    Thank you for this absorbed-in-nature, I want to take a friend to see the Caracara. I've hiked through Arizona southern border towns for 66 yrs and I have never had a problem. Camped out with my family on Ruby Rd. for years only to find out later that a jaguar study was in the area. The only incident I had was when I was walking in the dark around midnight looking for Scolpendera polymorpha centipedes and vinegaroons. I suddenly found myself surrounded by Border patrol and a helicopter lit up the area like it was daylight. I didn't have my ID with me but I showed them my plastic critter box with a centipede and they let me go on my way. Seen far more Border patrol than human coyotes in my favorite middle of nowhere AZ. Sonoran Desert has always been my home.😊
