Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is a Pontifical Foundation dependent on the Congregation for the Clergy in Rome in conformity with the provisions of Canon Law. ACN has over 60 years of service to the Church in need. Werenfried van Straaten, the Dutch Norbertine priest whom Pope John Paul II named ‘an outstanding apostle of charity’, founded ACN back in 1947. ACN receives no public or official Church funding, relying solely on the generosity of individual benefactors. ACN has national fundraising offices in 17 different countries and has over 600,000 individual benefactors. Despite the varied names from country to country, it is one organisation with one international head office (ACN-International Head Office). On average, ACN annually supports more than 5,000 projects from over 130 countries. ACN helps the Church so that the Church can help others.

It is a good thing that the war has ended. Many people were dying, and their houses were destroyed, and many others were displaced from their houses. But the time we are living in is not good at all. Kids my and Ghazal’s age have nothing to do. They can’t even go out to play on the streets because of some kidnapping incidents. They can also learn bad things on the streets.

Almost all Lebanese people struggle to maintain their basic needs. Food, health, water. And all the young people are leaving Lebanon to seek education and to seek work. Even vocations become smaller and minimized every year because of the economic crisis. We used to have around 120 seminarians. Now, every year, we have only 15 seminarians.

I lost my workshop; everything was gone. So we fled. I live here in a cemetery. During the feasts, I open the cemetery doors. When someone dies I do the burial ritual. Deep inside, I feel bad that my kids live in a graveyard. No one visits me, only the people who are crying and grieving. But I can’t let my kids sleep in the street.
