Thank you for watching. For moonrises, I use PhotoPils app on iphone. It has a one time fee but it's worth it in my opinion. I use that to find out where the moon is rising from different perspectives, placing a pin where I expect to be and then cross reference with google street view to see what the view will be. When you are on site, you can use the app for augmented reality that shows you where it will rise wtih the view but you need to be there first for that feature so that isn't as helpful for planning.

Still be honost… how did they ****** this up? I still can not believe it, if this camera had good mechanical shutter or less rolling shutter this would be the APS-C camera to rule them all… i think the most easy way was if canon did not screw up the mechanical shutter, and did normal dampening. It is not the first camera shutter they build…. Those 32mpix is a lot for a small sensor, but that shutter shick, they could avoid that

Nice informative video. I learned how to shoot in the late 60's well before image stabilization was even a dream. Ever wonder how we got sharp photos back then? Proper use of film and shutter speed, stabilizing oneself and even holding your breath at the right moment. We couldn't spray and pray back then unless you had a lot of money to waste on film and processing. I can only speak for myself, but photography was much more cerebral pre-digital. Good memories but I wouldn't want to go back compared to what we have today.

I am SO behind on videos. Life has gotten in the way...work, second kid, etc...but yes, i opted to move from the 400 to the 600. So far I'm happy with that decision, but in a perfect world I'd have something for lower light situations as well (like the 400 f/2.8 TC). So far, however, I have been happy with the extra reach at the expense of a stop of light.

@@Jessehermansonphotography Wow, you are not kidding! Exactly my path. I have days when I miss that 300mm f/2.8 ii and R7 combo man. That lens was perfection but the R7 was such a pain to use. I've also been thinking about the 400 f/2.8 f mount or 500 f/4. The 400 f/2.8 nikon didn't get a v3 like the canon did before the mirrorless transition so the nikon is a bit heavy I think. On a separate note, I made the mistake of getting a used Fuji GFX 100s on the cheap and it has blown my mind for landscape photography, so I've been investing in that a bit and spreading my money a bit thin. Love this! Thanks for sharing your trip. I'm curious how you feel about the reach of the 400mm. I'm using the 500mm PF on the Z8. I went to Point Reyes for the first time this weekend, and I was surprised by how many fences there were. I've since learned about the politics of the ranchers 😅 When you get near the bobcats like these, are they conveniently near you by the fence? Or maybe you're in places without fences? I'd also be curious to hear how important you feel the f/4.5 is while shooting at that location. The PF is a f/5.3, so it's around 2/3 less of a stop. Thanks for any tips :)

    • @MatthewRaifman
      @MatthewRaifman 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thanks so much for the comment. I thought a lot about the 600pf vs 400 f/4.5 and ultimately decided to unload the 400mm in favor of the 600 pf. The IQ is comparable though I think the 600pf is a tad better, but that extra 200mm does mean I have a lot more pixels on the subject. It's a compromise for sure, but I needed that extra reach. I do wonder if you already have the best of both worlds with the 500 PF. Yes, you have to adapt, but it is similar IQ and is a nice compromise between the two. With regard to Point Reyes, I tend to go past Point Reyes Station and out towards Abbotts Lagoon area. There are a lot of fences, don't get me wrong, but the bobcats roam and I have had good luck spotting them. It's always a crap shoot and there are plenty of times I don't see one. Have fun out there!

The thing is I shoot wildlife in Africa (birds, lions, elephants, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, rhinos). Some of them stationary, some of them moving. And often before sunrise and after sunset, so I have to bump up my ISO substantially shooting on my EF400mm f5.6L USM lens, or my RF600mm f11 lens. Also, do you know if there is a quick way/shortcut to instantly switch between ES & MS on the fly? I haven't come across one or found a button that you can customize for this Thanks

Interesting. In previous F mount lenses, I've noticed a definite quality loss when using TC's. I've own two 1.4'xs, a 1.6x, and the 1.7x III TC's. All had some loss of sharpness and contrast, but the 1,4x TC had the least impact. Northrop even did a test and found that using no TC and just cropping in, ended up resolving more detail. I've got a Fuji 200mm f/2 now with the matched 1,4x TC and notice no loss whatsoever, so I think they've got better. Just not long enough for birds even on a crop sensor. I've found for birds, you can never have too much focal length. They're small subjects, it takes a bunch of magnification to fill the frame with one.

Have you done the comparison between RF100-500mm with EF 300mm x 2.0TC image's quality? As i am not sure which one is better and not many reviewers cover video for canon 300mm f2.8. I love Canon R7, the image quality with with RF100-500mm is super sharp, but when the condition is very dark, especially birding in early morning forest, it really shows its weakness. Hope you can have this comparison video in the future, or, at least advice from you about the sharpness on EF300mm f2.8 with 2.0TC on it. Thanks.

P.S. I have the R6 for normal things but wanted a 300/2.8 for stage events and candids (yes, I have permission, nothing creepy). I decided on a lark that it would be fun to see how the R50 would do with the EF 70-200/2.8 II lens. Well, the R50 has a lovely little sensor. I think the R50 is a very worthy successor to the M50. But what really blew me away was the people pix I took (outdoors, head and shoulders mostly) with the R50 and 70-200. I find them really, really good. Indoors, of course, the R6 does much better, but that's okay, and the R50 does have its uses with the stabilized 70-200 indoors where I can use slower shutter speeds. TH-cam won't let me link to a sample photo, alas.

My experience with the R7 is that when I take a photo with the electronic shutter, a picture is taken directly on the sensor. This prevents motion blur due to the mechanism of the shutter. This gives you a pinsharp picture. Now a question about the Canon 90D. If I take a shot in "live view" with the Canon 90D, is that comparable to the shot with the electronic shutter of the R7? Doesn't the 90D also see the image via the sensor? does this also produce a pinsharp picture? Is this different than with the R7? can you answer me on this?

I love my 70-200 z . And I use the .z 180-600 in England the light is never really great for fhe z180-600 . Other wise the180-600 z is a good choice for some. The 70- 200z is great work horse. I think we should mention recording with those lenses . Photography is part of an older model film is the more modern version a bit like black and white gives way to colour.

As of recent there has been significant complaining, on TH-cam, about Fugi focus system - specifically about continuous focus and tracking. I think this has come after recent firmware updates. Have you noticed these issues. Is it something Fugi can fix? I'm wanting to buy a Fugi camera but I'm now reticent.

@@damianslow7080 absolutely. Thanks for the comment. I think it’ll be great for wedding as it’s very handholdable all day and night and f/2.8.

great vid! ... lemme ask -would would you get if you couldnt get the 70-180mm and you at least need like 135mm (120mm might be fine)??? preferably 2.8 or less

It’s tricky. I have a 135mm f/1.8 Samyang on Sony e mount and it’s amazing for under $600 but not available on z mount (you’d need to adapt from Sony to Z).

Despite its flaws, the R7 is still an amazing value for the money. Especially for someone like me coming from the 6D MkII which is capable, but not nearly as flexible as the R7. In the spirit of compromise (which I agree is necessary) I keep the shutter defaulted to electronic 1st curtain, but I assigned the silent shutter mode to a position on the 4 way pad. That way if I'm shooting stills or anything that won't be affected by rolling shutter I can switch into silent mode and back in an instant. Custom configurability like that is just another thing that makes this camera a winner at my budget level.

Agreed the mech shutter is basically unsuseable the first da yI used the R7 I was horrified by the lack of clarity, its WORSE than my old Canon RP XD

If 10 fps yields five sharp images, are you suggesting that 6 fps might yield more consistent keepers, allowing more time for shutter shock to calm down, or just stay with 10 fps and hope for the best? Great review, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
