Las Vegas Bicycling - Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop
While we were in Las Vegas for the Microsoft 365 Conference, we borrowed a couple Specialized Roubaix's from the Las Vegas Cyclery (@lasvegascyclery ) to ride the scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon. Covering 16 miles, including a stretch of highway to get back to the park visitor's center, where we parked, the views of the canyon are stunning. We even crossed paths with a genuine road runner - no coyotes were spotted though. The front Future Shock on these bikes was incredible.

WHY? And who gives a fuck? Might as well get on a trainer in the gym.
It’s nice to see it looking nice for a change
Rick & Trish - Loved it! Just finished riding DC to Pitt in Sept. - would love to join you on another adventure. All my best - Al (BSG)
@@alangross8723 Thanks! That's probably the best time of year for it. We'd love to do an adventure with you!
@@rickzeleznik Trish has my number - just call - I'm in! Al
I'm doing the GAP next Memorial day weekend and the C&O next Labor day weekend. I'm not doing anything crazy like bike either at one go.
Lived there from 1940 to 1960. Outstanding. Went back in 1980 after 20 years in the Navy. Unreal how a town could suffer such a downfall.
Rick thank you for sharing. Haven't had any luck finding someone to join me on that trip. What is the make/ model of your bike handlebars?
@@nelsoncaraballo9446 These were the Surly Moloko handlebars. They were fantastic for a trip like this. I keep them on my hard tail mountain bike that's set up for adventuring
What saddle are you using?
Nature is metal.
❤hHa
Very nice!
Hands down the best DC to the Burgh video ever! Curious how you pulled off some of those shots, although your website kind of gives some insight! Congratulations on your anniversary, and the fact that you're still talking to each other by the end of the trip. A group of us has been doing this trip (DC to PGH) every year since 2018 in memory of a fallen FBI Agent Martha Dixon (killed in the line of duty in DC in 1994), who is from Pittsburgh (as are we), and after whom the FBI Building in Pittsburgh is named. In 2018 the McKeesport police met us on the trail and saluted as we went by. Everyone had tears. Honored if you would join us. If interested, reply for more information. We have a support trailer to meet us every 20 miles or so, so we don't have to carry anything on our bikes.
not to be the 'rules guy', but just fyi, the max speed for the C&O Tow-path is 15 mph; it's posted on various signs along the path but yeah, frankly, never enforced
Indeed. There's nothing worse than people blowing by people on the trail. All I can say is that I tend to slow down to a point where I'm saying hi to people as if I were walking up behind them. Truth be told, there's a lot of stretches of that ride where you'd wish there there were more people around
I did the c@o from Georgetown in 2022. At age 74 took.me 4 days. The detour at paw paw when the contractor took you up the mountain with his 4 wheeler was something to experiance. Then you were on your own going down the other side. Glad I had my hybrid with 32mm knobby tires. You obviously had a different detour.
I heard rumors of such a 4 wheeler when we did the full c&o and GAP later that summer, but it seemed like they only operated on certain days. With all the stuff we were carrying, it would have been awesome
What month did y’all do this ride. Doing this with a group of friends in May or June and want to avoid the rain as much as possible.
I would do this on my Giant Cypress.
Wow🎉🎉
My home ! ❤ love this video I watch it all the time!
Looks like the surface has been improved from when l did it back in the 80’s, then as l remember it was all dirt. It would have pretty tuff to do it in a day, l think we took 3 days.
very similar path I take starting from near Burke Lake. 123-CoPkwy-W&O-Leesburg and return same way. 123 Vienna-W&O-Rosslyn-Mount Vernon house - route 1-Lorton- CoPkwy-home. on my shorter rides, CoPkWy-BurkeRd-Occoquan-fairfax-123south-back home
Excellent! In Germany we call this a RadMarathon! On someways we ride 280 kilometers a day. RadMarathon the C&O😅😅😅
Excellent job on this journey, thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the drone footage! You had some dismal weather but never complained, well done! Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s next up on my bucket list
Enjoy you video's. My wife and I are going on our first bike tour and are do the exact same routing that you did with your wife next week. In your video you stopped at The Rabbit Hole in Harpers Ferry, where did you stop for dinner in Hancock, Cumberland, Confluence and West Newton and are there any other good food suggestions you might have. Looks like its going to be hot and dry so no rain gear, it looked like it was pretty tough for you but you must have a great sense of accomplishment. Thanks
I'm planning a next year trip DC to Cumberland. Thinking of getting a cheap Craigslist bike one speed cruiser that I can donate to someone once I get to Cumberland so I don't have to deal with Amtrak bike issues on that ride back to DC.
Thank you for sharing. My wife and I of 38 years 🎉 did the GAP + C&O just last month. Loved it all. We somehow avoided all the rain, but not all the mud, mud, mud from Cumberland to Hancock. Oh man, those stairs at Harper’s Ferry 😅. And congratulations to you both!
Pa. has let its citizens down. Decades and decades of increasing taxes and they have suandered it on follish things. Deterioration, rot, collapse.
The population of McKeesport peaked at around 55,000 in 1940 to around 17,000 in the 2020 census.
Nz??
Great song
rick looks super old in the video (riding) but young during the recap. I guess it true, glasses, a bike helmet and a grandpa shirt adds 20 years.
Lol. That's the 2nd time in the last 2 weeks that someone's called my costco button downs grampa shirts 🥺. Fwiw, I feel 20 years older that I did last summer.
Were you able to get an Uber to/from? Or did you have to rent a car & a rack?
We'd rented a pickup truck for general adventuring when we got into town. Drove it down to the grand canyon for a few days after the conference.
But that bike shop was only a 8-ish mile ride from the park, sounded like most people just usually ride from there. The shop also had vans that run out there but i dont recall if it was a free shuttle deal or there was a fee.
😂😂😂
Very nice!
Partying like it's windows 95
Or at least Windows ME lol
I'm planning on doing this ride the last week of June 2023 with my son and daughter, I hope the Paw Paw Tunnel is open by then.
That sounds awesome! It looks like parts are open and there's a shuttle running.
I use freebird as often as possible in videos
I once camped out behind that bike shop. I don't know if they use the shelter for camping anymore, but they even had showers.
I swear, that bike shop saves my bacon every time I'm in the area
👏 congrats. What a bummer with that flat. I plan to ride the C&O in one day this May or June. Fortunately the construction at MM 88 should be done any day. I'm also hoping the the Paw Paw tunnel will reopen soon. That should save me a good amount of time. I will definitely start earlier in the morning (~5:00 am) to maximize daylight. Getting ready for a 100 mile training ride tomorrow.
That should have you in daylight by the time you hit paw paw, so that should be good. I intended to start earlier, but one thing after another...
Absolutely gorgeous shots my friend 😊
Doing this in Oct from Pitts to DC. Hoping the paw paw tunnel is open by then. I've hiked that mountain section years ago I'm sure it's worse with a loaded bike .
Great video, thanks!
Excellent story told along the way and the videography is top notch! Happy Cycling!
Thanks John - I suspect we'll appreciate having this down the line
Enjoyed reliving my trip in the mud 5years ago. I was touched by the side trip to the place you grew up. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Michael, that little detour bit was a real treat for me. Less so for her given the climb up those hills, but it was really special.
Congrats! From someone who rides the C&O regularly, that’s a tough ride! Way worse than 190 miles on a paved road. I’ve done the route between DC and Pittsburgh twice now and the GAP is way nicer than the C&O.
Terrain was worse, but i definitely appreciated the consistent shade, until the sun started going down i guess :)
Great video, thanks for posting this.
This was such a beautiful Video! I recognized so many things yet so vastly different. I am 69 years old and moved away 60 years ago. I have watched many videos of McKeesport over the years and reminisce about family and friends and the different locations throughout the city.
I'd been watching those videos too - ultimately was gave me the desire to get up there to get some footage. They're just tearing so much of it down that I figured it was a ticking clock.
Well done!! Me and my wife biked from Pittsburgh to DC in june of this year for our 25th anniversary. We spread it out over a week. Very nice trip really enjoyed it.
What a great way to celebrate. Looks like you both managed to marry above your station. Question - what was your camera rig? I'm fascinated by how it dampned out the bumps, leveled out the leans, and turned around. You did a super job filming and editing.
Nice going. Enjoyed the video. Im a few miles from you. I love the C&O but at a slow 8mph pace camping. Good job
great video man! im aiming to do it in one day this april so this is super motivating. And then im gunning for pitt to dc in one day next!
Im just glad to add to the pool of content out there :) I think i watched every video on the subject 20 times before making the trip
I like the complimentary music you select. Always been interested in Pennsylvania.
