Challenges in our health care system and how to identify burnout and imposter syndrome
I gave this talk to a group of 130 newly accepted medical students and their families in April 2024. This is not strictly about medical physics but it is related. We can all suffer from stress, burnout and, for some, impost syndrome. These things are more likely in a high-stress professional environment like medical physics.
I start by discussing challenges in our health care system, then talk about stress and burnout. Finally I talk about imposter syndrome. Ways to identify these issues in ourselves and others, and how to combat them are discussed.

Medical Physics as a Career
What does a medial physicist do? This video discusses what a medical physicist does for a living, what different kinds of physics jobs there are in medicine and briefly how to go about becoming one. For more on the pathway to becoming a medical physicist, check out my video on that subject: th-cam.com/video/D4-ldopO5fU/w-d-xo.html
How to Become a Medical Physicist in the US
This video covers the pathway from undergraduate to becoming a board-certified medical physicist. The pathway starts off the same regardless of specialty (radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, etc.). Later in the video I cover radiation therapy more specifically. I'll talk about what you can take as an undergrad, what you need at the graduate level and finally residency.

Residents Seminar 9th July 2021 - Ed on T REF chamber for small field dosimetry
This is part of our Residents Seminar Series. Each week, one of the 4 medical physics residents from UToledo gives a short talk on a topic of their choosing. This week PGY2 resident Ed Cichiwicz reviews a chamber designed to be used as a a reference detector for small field dosimetry. In this application, the chamber doesnt provide the scan data but is used to remove fluctuations in the output ...

A Career in Therapy Medical Physics
This week I gave a talk to a group of REU students at the University of Toledo physics department. My goal was to educate them on medical physics - specifically therapy because thats what I do - as a career option for physics majors. Hopefully other undergraduates also find this information useful as most medical physicists find out about the career rather late. Note: I somehow muted myself for...

Setting up for monthly output checks and energy checks.
In this quick video I perform the set-up for monthly output checks on our TrueBeam linac. In the case of photons, we use a cube phantom with holes for ion chamber placement at 5cm and 10cm physical depth. Output constancy is measured at 5cm and the energy consistency is measured by taking a ratio between the measurements at 5cm and 10cm and comparing to our baseline. We use a similar technique ...

Practical demonstration of TG 51 on a TrueBeam at the University of Toledo
In this video Kingsley and I perform TG-51 on a photon beam from a TrueBeam linac. We then make a small adjustment to the output to demonstrate how the output is changed on a TrueBeam. Our machine is calibrated to deliver 1cGy/MU at dmax for a 10x10 field at 100cm SSD. All measurements were performed at a physical depth of 10cm with a 0.6cc PTW 300001 ion chamber calibrated every two years by a...

    You just poured cerrobend on the paper without leaking? or is there a transparent plastic tray on top of the paper to prevent the leakage?

      We print from RayStation and it knows our cone ends at 95cm so that magnification factor of 0.95 is built-in. However, we always check it. Yes, its 95cm so what should be 10cm at iso will be 9.5cm on the paper.

    • @tranceatlantic4

      Possibly a CAMPEP certificate program would accept an MD. Alternately, the pathway would be the same as for an undergrad - take at least 3 upper level physics courses and apply to a graduate program. Shortest path would be an MS in medical physics, followed by 2 year residency.

    What is a dosimetrist?

    • @tranceatlantic4

      In the US, it is someone who does radiation therapy treatment plans.

    • @tranceatlantic4

      They do treatment plans for radiation therapy patients. A physicist or physician may also do some but a dosimetrist will often do the majority of treatment planning for a busy department

      Sorry but I have to admit that I do not know enough to help on this subject. You need a pathway to ABR accreditation. Maybe the ABR website has resources.

    Hello sir, "I hold a Bachelor's degree in Radiology from my home country, and I have completed coursework in fundamental physics, radiation physics, diagnostic physics, CT scan physics, MRI physics, and ultrasound physics during my undergraduate studies. I am wondering if I can apply as an international student for a Master's in Medical Physics at universities in the United States. I would appreciate any information you have on this matter. Thank you."

    • @tranceatlantic4

      Yes, you can do an MS ion medical physics as an international student. You need a degree in physics or at least 3 upper level physics courses. Very likely you would also need to prove you have the financial resources to pay for the degree because most MS degrees in medical physics are considered a professional degrees are not funded.

    Starting salary as radiation therapist?

    • @tranceatlantic4

      I dont know the starting salary for therapists but I know the average is $90k. Just to be clear, this video is about a career in medical physics and not RT(T)s. However, we at UToledo are about to open a RT(T) degree program so I have come to learn quite a bit about their career pathway.
