My mom's people are from Starkville (Oktibbeha County), MS. She passed away on 09/12/23. Gonna try to make it there for a visit...it's been over 35 years...time flies😮❤❤❤❤.

So grateful to have grown up in southeast MS. I moved to central MS (Jackson area) two years ago, and it’s terrible here. Whenever I tell people that I come from Purvis, they always say something like, “it’s good down there.” Or, “oh that’s why you act so bougie.” 💀My community was small but we lacked in poverty. Cattle fields all around, we never went hungry or broke. Edit: knowing the history of my state, I can say that the delta is worse off because the white slave owners took off to Georgia when the Civil War ended. It was calculated that rebuilding in Georgia would take less time and most of the wealthy had already fled there for asylum in Savannah. They left the slaves behind to fend for themselves, and the black community never recovered. They were left with barren land and no rights to the property they lived on and maintained. The whites left behind were poor folk, who turned to sharecropping alongside liberated slaves. Mississippi is the furthest behind because we are the product of forgotten people. The descendants of poor folk and slaves who had no say in politics or war.

Absolutely miserable here! The people are rude, politicians are corrupt, and there are a lack of resources for children with disabilities especially black children!

What an excellent video! Just being honest, as a person considered Black by this society, I’d rather live in Mississippi than somewhere trendy with wealthy White people like Maine (speaking from experience!). Somewhere like Cleveland or Tchula, MS I’d at least blend in and not be treated like a sideshow attraction by white capitalists. Love and solidarity to the Delta and its people 🤎.

So sad to see that the tornado destroyed the community. My family went to rolling fork and donated supplies. The people are very nice.

I hated growing up in the Delta, we were to poor to know that we were poor. Blacks lived on the poor side of the track and whites lived on the rich side of the tracks. All the comments about the closeness of families is right on point. But I dreamed of leaving as soon as I could. And when I turned 18 I left and never came back for years and now even when I visit after all these year there is very little change. Poverty still exists. How can this be in the richest nation in the world.

I just came across this video about the Mississippi delta, I lived in Lambert, Mississippi til I was 16. Went to high school in Mark Mississippi because there was no high school in Lambert. There was some hard times but I really loved living there, thanks for the video.

My grandfather(John Bethea) was born in Lumberton, Miss. My grandmother (Genetta Weary) was born in Tylertown, Miss. Have you ever heard of these cities? I would ❤️ to visit these two cities.

Mississippi is one of the most racist state for blacks so, why would its the best place to grow up in with its poverty..

I born and raised in marks Mississippi i had the best childhood we didn't have much but me and my siblings had love and I had many mothers and daddys beside my biological parents who love us and help raised us. Yes it do take a village to help raised a child

I have never met any one in your videos, yet I know them very well and they all know me. They remind me of the people I grew up with in Richmond Virginia's JACKSON WARD. After the Civil War it was called Little Africa. The black men, many were CIVIL WAR veterans, formed an armed militia to protect themselves and their families and property. Many were proud PRINCE HALL Masons. Keep on accenting and building on the positive things about the Delta. Don't EVER GO NEGATIVE. We have more than enough negativity already. Hurry up and get a lot more content on line.

Delta roots and proud..Father was from Mound Bayou.The first time I got to see it was when I drove a 🚚. I grew up hearing a thousand stories about this area though.

Being a Brit and a Blues fan (read diehard fanatic) I took a Greyhound Bus from Memphis down Highway 61 to Clarkesdale - a great experiece and genuinely very friendly people. The poverty was a shock - on a level with Bangla Desh, the people were very generous to me, it seems like the less they have the more they give.

Too bad it's not like that now..

I have relatives in Mississippi, and I love them to death. However, living down there I don't think I could take it. My grandmother left the South in 1920 and I am glad she did. However, I noticed that Southerns have a since of family and they will take you in if need be. That is one thing I loved about them.
