Grading Spinal Cord Injury Severity in dogs - a one minute summary.
Many popular dog breeds, such as French bulldogs and Dachshunds are susceptible to intervertebral disc disease.
Most dogs can be successfully treated if they are diagnosed early, investigated promptly, and treated appropriately. Key to decision-making and outlook is the clinical severity.
In this video, I give a very brief overview of one of the most popular and useful grading systems.
Managing spinal cord injury well does not come cheap. Please make sure you have a good insurance policy, or other financial strategy, if you choose a susceptible dog as your companion.

Casting for metatarsal fractures in a dog
มุมมอง 20K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an unedited video of the placement of a cast for the management of metatarsal fractures in a dog. It’s quite long! It’s not for entertainment, but if you’re a vet, nurse or tech placing a cast, you might find it useful. Up to 60% of dogs having a cast suffer complications, and the consequences of those complications can be catastrophic, or at least inconvenient and expensive. In people,...

Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS): Surgery Demonstration
มุมมอง 5K6 ปีที่แล้ว
WARNING: This is a video of an actual surgery. It has been created for veterinary surgeons interested in this technique. The Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS) was developed by Ben Walton and John Innes, both RCVS Specialists in Small Animal Surgery, to address the difficulties in managing HUMERAL INTRACONDYLAR FISSURES and the associated fractures. This condition, in the UK, primarily ...
Ralph, one day after HIRS and LEAP repair
มุมมอง 3126 ปีที่แล้ว
HIRS (Humeral Intracondylar Repair System) is a self compressing screw that Prof. John Innes and I invented for the treatment of fissures and fractures in the humeral condyle. It allows delivery of bone graft or substitute directly to the fissure, around the shaft of the implant. LEAP (Lateral Epicondylar Anatomical Plate) is a 3D printed, titanium alloy locking plate that was designed based on...

Great Info
Informative and to the point!
Thank you very much for the great info
Great info...simple and to the point. We took our Jack Russell to a vet yesterday to assess her injury. We suspect Cruciate failure, however the vet was unable to provide a diagnosis after performing the exam (same procedure in your video). We took x-rays that show no breaks, however, the vet wanted to send the x-rays to a specialist for a second opinion. We're so confused. It seems as though the diagnosis could be provided based on the exam you performed (and he performed) in this video. Can you think of anything else they are looking for in the x-ray? Our dog is only 7 years old very active and healthy. We should hear back from him today.
What was it?
I‘ve never got a better and clear explanation about this subject although I studied to become an dog physiotherapist! So thank you so much ❤
My dog was diagnosed with this a month ago. The vet recommended surgery. I opted to wait. She is now walking on all 4's again and only raises her leg when running, which I try to stop her from doing, or tired. If she keeps up at this pace, I don't think she will need the surgery. I also opted not to get her a brace either. I think the fact that she holds her leg up from time to time is in response to pain, which might be good to keep her from putting pressure on that leg and further damaging it. A brace would not allow her to do that and might cause further damage. Just my two cents that seems to be working. I am keeping my fingers crossed on that.
Jesus christ dude, you are literally talking how your dog is struggling with her condition, and you opted to wait. That's a negligence. It's not working, and your dog is compensating on other limbs, stressing them more, especially opposing leg. The surgery involves exploration of the joint to dispose of torn ligament, and prevent further osteoarthritis, which will inevitably come, but if you leave your dog with torn ligament and unstable joint, the problem will only go further, and her condition will be more severe. Who the hell even are you to say "i don't think she will need the surgery"? Do you at least have any degree in live sciences? Painful to read your statement.
Fantastic video! So informative and easy to understand. Thanks so much for sharing.
hello doc, can i ask you something. my 1 year old puppy get into accident and it broke his front legs. one of them are shattered bone. can we save it not to get Amputated?
How’s your dogs leg now ?
@@Nelly-kl9rl one of the front leg gets amputated. Vet said it the other one will be healed.. it did heal, but took so long. It still has some lil wound.
@@yennie_cutie226 aww sorry. But I’m glad she’s doing okay!!! Xxx
@@Nelly-kl9rl thank you xox ☺️ He's healthy and I am thankful..
My 11 month old puppy broke her tibia and ulnar front leg. Clean breaks vet suggested pins. I cannot afford $5000.00 can a long term splint allow the bones to heal without pins?
Excellent video!
Hi Ben- what if the dog has both elbow and hip dysplasia? How would the dog show it’s lameness
This is the best video I have watched in a while. Thank you so much for this. How is it possible to have access to the more detailed videos? Please let me know.
Incredibly useful, thank you
I understand about the canine lameness more now! Thank you!
That was absolutely fantastic, clear and brilliantly explained! Please please release more content like this! And thank you for this video
Hi, I am training to be a hydrotherapist an this is really useful. How can I access the other more detailed video you mention in this one?
Super video that helps me understand this better :-). Very Grateful, thanks .
U didn't tell us how to cure lameness
For those asking how to fix it and will it heal? There are too many things to mention that could make a dog lame and the reasons for it, yet these may all be similarly displayed in the dog's gait. A dog can't talk, so it is not as easy to diagnose the reasons they're distributing their weight differently and important to visit your vet, who will be able to make a diagnosis and if not, refer you to a specialist for further investigation. Once you have a diagnostic as to the cause, you can look into possible treatments to help your dog best you can.
Very good! Wish you were in Kansas City, MO ... USA
Great job explaning the biomechanics. I just learned the TTA2 and hope to start using that technique.
Thank you, very useful
Thank you so much for posting this video. This has been extremely helpful! Large heavy chested active dog, and obviously favoring front shoulder. I'll use videos of her to analyze and confirm further. Thanks again.
Thank you! This is very helpful.
thank you. Very useful for my module on gait analysis for canine massage therapy
