Probably the most drastic and epic one. Nothing in the storyboard ever implied the chorus and instrument playing had to be that detailed in motion. Also, the fact that the Ui scene was supposed to be her climbing the stairs as opposed to in the kitchen cooking. My fav was probably the part where the finger wiggle during the "No No No" part is mandated

I love how all the openers are Yui led garage band songs while the closers are Mio led refined pop songs. Someone thought WAYYY too much on it and we should really thank them.

1:16 Love how in the previous OPs, it's just still shots of Sawako and the others, but here, in the last stretch of the anime, they've decided to have HTT hug them and give them their thanks as Yui repeats "I love you"

I think one of the many, MANY reasons Kyoto Animation and Yamada Naoko in particular are always associated with high quality anime is cause they focused on (1) clear silhouttes and (2) putting personality in every movement, like you'd see in K-On!. Like, thats what they focused on first. Then, as more and more talents and techniques are appearing in animation, you'd see how linework and consistent details improved in their later anime, cause they have an established rule: personality > pretty but flat characters.

1:16 Tatsuya Ishihara: "We'll make it sunset. It'll look better." That man and his use of lighting. Don't get me started on the spinning club room scene with the falling light coming in through the western windows.

当時は終わりが近づく感じがして好きに慣れませんでしたが改めて名曲ですね。最後のコーラスが凄まじく美しいからよく聞いてみて！ どうか安らかに。

I am absolutely appalled that this film was not even nominated at the 2017 Oscars for Best Animated Feature. Only after rewatching it and appreciating the Shinto themes and plot, I realized it's genius and a masterpiece. I enjoyed "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" but after watching this this became my favorite Shinkai film. I compared it with "Weathering with You" and IMO this film was way better. Albeit I saw some holes which baffled me like why Taki and Mitsuha didn't realize early on that their timelines were separated by 3 years, when they were writing their journals on their smartphones each time they switch bodies. They should have realized it from the start when checking their calendars. And the scene where Mitsuha's notes and journals got deleted automatically in front of Taki's eyes when they went to the Itomori crater site also confused me. Also, it also didn't make sense where Taki woke up at the rim of the crater when he got frustrated he forgot Mitsuha's name, he suddenly woke up in an alternate continuity where Mitsuha and the Itomori residents survived the comet impact. Otherwise, it's a great film. Although Shinkai himself felt that it was not perfect.

Have to appreciate the amount of work to express in a storyboard, that you want the camera to go around the characters, and the characters to turn to see to the camera when they have it in a comfortable angle. Crazy stuff there

Fun fact: at 1:24 the girls are perfectly lined up so their surnames spell THANK! Tainaka Ritsu Hirasawa Yui Akiyama Mio Nakano Azusa Kotobuki Tsumugi
