Twilight Sojong Service - 12/27/2024
Twilight Sojong Service
Speaker: Rev. Igye Su Elizabeth Brennan
A Sojong Fire Puja is a powerful purification practice designed to release negative karma and transform harmful habits of body, speech, and mind. Through this sacred ritual, we make offerings to the fire, symbolizing the burning away of past misdeeds and obstacles, allowing for renewal and spiritual clarity. As we move into the new year, this ceremony amplifies our intentions for positive mental and spiritual growth, creating space for wisdom and compassion to flourish in our lives.

Is the true love chant part of the new weekly ritual book or were yall reading thru the precepts? Sorry it just started without context
Good morning! Om a hum.
I’m in the area and I’m interested in joining. How would I get started?
Hi @theprocess1993. We'd love to have you in our in-person sangha! All you need to do is show up! Service is every Sunday. Bell chant starts at 9:30, main service is at 10. More information can be found on our website, grbuddhisttemple.org. You can also sign up for our newsletter there, to see all the goings-on!
What a great presentation.
Thank you for sharing your experience, Shinkyu 🙏Michigan metta to you and all ❤
🙏🙏🙏 It's good to see you again on TH-cam. Your talk today is so very relevant!
6x6 is internal and external.
Great job on the opening chants!
Great teaching. Thank you.
108 is half of 216 which is 6*6*6. 108 is the number of tests you will face in this life where you will need to listen to your conscience. 216 is the number of times you will fail and be reincarnated before you finally listen to past selves.
Very synchronistic and concise explanation which appeared right when I needed it! My salt sticks randomly decided to talk to me in binary, I pulled out some long and short ones, and while decoded (they looked suspiciously orderly, as in, short sticks also had same lenght) they gave 108.
And what about 27 and 54?
Man the ads really killed the vibe.
Hello. Thank you for watching. We do not monetize any of our videos, so you should not see any ads on them. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Are you using a third party app for viewing? That may be adding it's own ads.
@@grandrapidsbuddhisttemple8275 it still shows ads, watching on TH-cam mobile app
Ads, no ads. No preferences, no problem.
This was an absolutely lovely presentation of very useful daily insight in the practice of our profound human instrument of being regarding the Cosmic meaning of 108! Much appreciated! Thank you!
Wonderful Dharma talk. Thank you!
Thank you for letting us take part via video🙏
Thank you 🙏🏽
🙏
🙏
The news about the neighbor that was battling cancer really hit home for me. My sister is currently battling stage 3 breast cancer and my grandpa passed away a few days ago from liver cancer.
I appreciate the wisdom. Thank you Venerable Kunga
Thank you for providing the live stream. I enjoyed the service, and would have loved to be there if I wasn’t contagious! Hopefully next week. 🙏
I really appreciated the dharma talk today! I hope it appears by itself on TH-cam so I can share it with others.
All the Buddhist lineages have a purpose, as the Lotus Sutra ch 2 discusses. It’s challenging to hold up one type of practice as better than another or to compare it to black and white films versus 3d . I do believe more variety of practices is essential - Americans shouldn’t have to be boxed in. I have struggled with what best makes an optimum “American” Buddhist practice for years. There are esoteric practices that don’t lend themselves to this over simplification, you lose the power generated by the intention of the mantras chanted for hundreds of years. There is a mysticism that can be connected to if your mind and heart is open to the potential. I wish you blessings and luck, it is a daunting task to develop and grow Buddhism in the Midwest<. For myself, I will stay with my Tendai practices with its wide range of zen, esoteric, pure land and Lotus Sutra practices, it’s served me well personally for 23 years. I gave up teaching as I’ve found people aren’t willing to make the commitment to what I offered and no matter how often I tried different formulas of services, English, non English etc., what I saw was a lot of folks that are spiritual but not religious, which means committing to a sangha is difficult. Or perhaps I just didn’t appeal as a teacher, no matter in the end 🙂. It also doesn’t help that mindfulness has been diluted by companies as a productivity tool instead of a spiritual path, Buddhism imho needs to reclaim that practice back to distinguish the real depth.. Gassho to you all.
Many thanks for this very clear and encouraging talk. Dogen is thick and difficult, but you are sharing his teachings in a very accessible way, even for someone who has practiced soto Zen for some years.
Very nice video, thanks for posting!!! Try -> 𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖒𝖔𝖘𝖒!!!
Fantasitic dharma talk Jing Su!!
🙏Gassho.
Sound breaking up- hard to understand at times. But appreciate the talk about koans. "Suchness."
Great!!!
I just wanted to let it be known how much I appreciated this dharma talk. I've been wondering how to understand anatta, not self, and this explanation of the skandas and the examples was very insightful!
What a beautiful ceremony. Always moving and reaffirming.
Thank you. This was a wonderful, thought provoking experience. Peter and Ellen Altamore
Excellent.
❤️
Wonderful lessons! As a clinical dietitian, I relate personally and professionally.
Thank you, Shane. We have missed the Bell Chant.
Thank you for this teaching.
Oddly, I don't see meditating on these topics as depressing. I see them as freeing. Like you said, a lot of people here are taught to fear and avoid death. We hand our dead over to professionals and only see them primped and prepared to look "lifelike" before they're put in the ground. I love the idea of not fearing death. I love the idea of not fearing old age and sickness. Meditations like this help us metaphorically knit our own protective blankets against the fear and dread of these entirely natural occurrences. Now that we expose ourselves to these difficult topics we can prepare ourselves for meeting them. Being "death positive" has changed my life for the better. Thank you for your amazing talk!
This is very insightful and new approach in expressing the concept of 108 with combinations.
So happy we can catch up on TH-cam. Peter and I were out east last Sunday and felt adrift but now we're back. Thank you, Hung Su.
See Praveen Mohan's video for better explanation on 108. His explanation is mind boggling.
I’ve always loved Buddhism but wasn’t ready to commit to it. But I new id return to the path when I was ready . I’m ready and cannot wait to be apart of the community again :) . Can’t wait to meet you guys !
