Hi, I'm Melanie.
I struggled to recover from post-concussion syndrome for more than 6 years. During my recovery, I have felt lost and alone beyond words and I never want you to feel the same way. That's why I'm here to tell that if I could do it, so can you.
I’m here to help you claim back your life and start living your dreams again.
Lifeyana is here - I am here - to support you. To help you feel recognized in what’s been happening to you, to let you know that you are not alone in this - and to provide you with amazing amounts and an invaluable quality of content to show you the way out. Unlike what many doctors tell you and what clinics try to charge you - post-concussion syndrome can be cured and you can do it yourself, from home. I am living proof.

CONCUSSION STORIES: Neck pain after concussion? (Sarah Etheridge, PT)
Neck pain after concussion is a very common symptom. If you suffer from neck pain, learning about the muscles and nerves that may be causing the pain in this episode may be very helpful for you. However, if you don’t have any neck pain, or just minor complaints like stiffness, there may still be something going on with the muscles and nerves in your neck. That is why, PT Sarah Etheridge says, it is always important to check the neck after concussion.

CONCUSSION STORIES: Concussion biomarkers (Eric Thelin episode 3)
มุมมอง 51ปีที่แล้ว
Concussion biomarkers are needed. That is because the current imaging machines like MRI and CT more often than not can not visualize a concussion. This often results in doctors saying that there is nothing wrong with us, or that the symptoms we have are psychological. If a simple blood test can show you sustained a concussion and are at risk for lingering symptoms, concussion care would improve...

CONCUSSION STORIES: Mild TBI Needs Attention and Specialization (CENTER-TBI Convention 2022)

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the medical term for concussion and for post-concussion syndrome. The confusing thing is that concussions have been classified this way historically. However, new concussion research has found that it’s incorrect to call concussions “mild” brain injuries. That’s why the CENTER-TBI research group made changing post-concussion protocols a major point. I want ...

I’d love for the dr talk more about DAI and how they can be helped or treated
How did you get your concussion? Was it your first? Did you have autonomic dysfunction or POTS after concussion? Or Small Fiber Neuropathy all from concussion? I’m just not sure that pcs is as simple of lingering psychological and diet problems.
Great episode Melanie! Being mindful on my walks in nature after my accident really helped my recovery.
I got a bump on the head in the sixth grade while on a hiking field trip. I remember hiking back and something was seriously wrong with my vision. I could only see a small area in part of my peripheral vision, It was scary but eventually came back. I suffered a hard hit playing football in HS a few years later and, again, my vision went screwy for awhile ('bout an hour). I later got a concussion, playing football, that put me in the hospital overnight. Again, my vision problem returned. Im in my 50s now and, as an adult, I have experienced random periods where my vision goes screwy...like it did when I had hit my head in school. These episodes of vision loss, however, are followed by headaches. I think these headaches are migraines because they can be pretty intense. Now, I find myself looking for answers or people who have similar issues.
Hi @Patricharles7190 Thank you for sharing part of your story. I can only imagine how it's scary moving through these effects at the time, and now having these episodes. Did you ever visit a an eye doctor and/or a headache clinic? If not, and if you can afford them, I'd start with them. Their tests may help you identify / rule out the common possible causes. Hope this helps!

There is always hope!!
Enjoyed this episode and agree that 'concussion' is very confusing word as is the current classification systems! Curious... why does post-traumatic amnesia occur and why does that increase the risk factor?
Hi Pamela, thank you for asking this question! Dr. Diaz-Arrastia wrote the following answer for you: "This is a great question. Amnesia is different from consciousness. Certainly everyone who is unconscious (due to disruption of the key brain circuits that are required for consciousness) is also amnestic. However, (and TBI is one of the most common examples of this) there are situations where patients are conscious (i.e. they are able to give their names, follow comments, even have some very short-term memory) but are not able to lay down medium and long-term memory. This is due to dysfunction of a set of brain circuits that are required for consolidating memory, which are different from the neural circuits underlying consciousness. It turns out that the duration of post-traumatic amnesia is a more reliable predictor of long-term outcome that duration of unconsciousness. The other issue is that amnesia is not like in the movies, where someone turns on a switch and memory is completely normal after a certain point. In real life, there is a period of time where some short and medium-term memory is present, but not completely. That is explains why some patients report that they have several years of post-traumatic amnesia, even if during those years they were working, fulfilling their family responsibilities, etc." We hope this helps! With love, Melanie
Thank you for explaining it more! It is another piece to my puzzle. My memory didn’t begin to return for 6-months and I recalled additional details up until about 16-mo post injury. It helps to understand the “why” as I navigate this journey. Thank you for all you share!
The "why" is so important, because as we make sense of what's happening to us, we can not only understand deeply - nurturing acceptance and psychological healing - but also find clues as to what's needed to heal our brains and entire bodily systems from injury. Keep on moving forward dear Pam, your curiosity and drive to understand are your strengths!
A really interesting and helpful interview - thank you both! It’s instructive to broaden one’s focus of recovery and identity beyond just cognitive ability. It can be painful to be fixated on this, and define healing and health by this metric alone, particularly when progress is slower than you hope and/or there are external pressures (E.g. work and family) to improve. It can also make you beholden to a reaching a certain level of cognitive functioning before you can feel happy and fulfilled. Hopefully, a broader focus on meaning, compassion and other forms of growth can help to reduce the co-mobility of anxiety and depression when recovering from concussion. These mental health challenges are secondary injuries that hopefully can be avoided or mitigated, as has been shown with other types of bodily injuries or illness (E.g. a broken ankle), and with some people that can avoid depression after brain injury.
Avoiding the depression part is Ketamine, Hormone Replacement and Fish Oil. Without healing the underlying ILA6, TNFa, Hypogonadism, Growth Hormone Deficiency, Thyroid we can never heal. But you treat the underlying condition we can succeed..
Fantastic video. Now we need to standardize ER, Primary Care, Family Medicine, Physician Assistant, and implement the baseline acute care ( Ketamine Infusion, Progesterone, Fish Oil, Magnesium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and N Actyl Cystine) and Post TBI Outpatient the same as above but Addressing ( Testosterone, Estrodiol, Growth Hormone, Thyroid, Progesterone, Pregnenolone). And enforce this, if a patient has symptoms and physician isnt doing the Standard of Care they need to be punished by their Medical Board. Theres no excuse any longer. We know ILA6, CX, Cytokines, TNFA are the signals and we have the above to treat them. If your not healing the root cuase its just malice at this point.
Post TBI Therapy needs to be Ketamine, Micronized Progesterone Oral, Fish Oil, Hormones, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin D. The idea that ohh just sit in a dark room and look at the wall is just as bogus as Talk Therapy for TBI. If its not based in stopping ILA6, CX, and Cytokines with safe compounds then its not the up to date science and can be disregarded.
Whats really frustrating is major medical systems are focused on sick care. And not total health. God forbid if you go into an Emergency Room dont have a brain bleed. Then they will pump you full of Benzodiapines and wonder why your going into Psychosis. And honestly Dr Mark Gordon has gotten no where. Let alone if you end up at an Endocrinologist you'll be worse off. Bottom line we need to force the hands of the FDA, AMA, and ensure Ketamine, Fish Oil, Hormones are the foundation of Treatment as Standard of Care. And theres no excuse anymore...
