    What a superb piece by the world's best living composer! If you also enjoyed the stunning entrances of the Bach prelude, check out Part's similar use of Tchaikovsky in the Second Symphony - one of the most emotional moments in his whole great body of work. But the director really should have avoided the corny camerawork, as if the intense drama of the music somehow wasn't enough.

    “You can kill people with sound," noted Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Then he went on, “And if you can kill, then maybe there is also the sound that is opposite of killing. And the distance between these two points is very big. And you are free-you can choose.” This is, perhaps an apt commentary on mid-20th century classical music. In this lecture to Wyoming Catholic College juniors, Dr. Stanley Grove discusses the musical works of Pärt as well as John Cage and Krzysztof Penderecki. Sounds that kill, sounds that bring life, and in the case of John Cage’s “4:33,” no sounds at all.

    I love orchestral music, though I often have to struggle to appreciate modern music. It seems to me that this is the perfect application of its chaos and dissonance. The struggle between violence and oppression on one hand and faith and peace on the other is profound. I don't remember the last time I was moved to tears by something like this.

¡Ojalá vinieran a Barcelona! Arvo Pärt sabe tocarme el alma en varias de sus obras, así como lo consiguen Monteverdi, Bach, Bruckner, Mahler y Beethoven. Gracias, Allen Schantz por compartir este fragmento de divinidad.

    5:38-42 The plain instruction is: Suffer any injury that can be borne, for the sake of peace, committing your concerns to the Lord's keeping. And the sum of all is that Christians must avoid disputing and striving. If any say, flesh and blood cannot pass by such an affront, let them remember, that flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God; and those who act upon right principles will have most peace and comfort. (Matthew Henry's Commentary)

    Powerful!! Composed at the peak of his first creative period and immediately banned by the Soviet authorities because of its strong Christian message. This, among the general pervailing conditions in Soviet Estonia, sent Pärt into a deep crisis. But tthe rest, as they say, is history.

    My favorite music is deeply religious, despite my position as an existential humanist (or atheist). This section of Bach's b-minor Mass is to me the apex of creativity and joy in the repertory. I never tire of it.

      I feel exactly the same. I'm also a shameless atheist, but religious music, particularly from the late Baroque and Classical periods, is my absolute favorite - there is nothing better.

      I wholeheartedly agree with you and the first writer that, “this section of Bach’s b-Minor mass is…the apex of creativity and joy in the repertory.” This is also my “absolutely favorite" music! Could it be that your thoughtful perceptions (as “shameless atheists”) paradoxically reflect the Gloria Dei, as Bach believed and wrote in the dedication for his works (Solo Dei Gloria)? I’d love to know your thoughts. -A shameless Christian

    • @F-Man
      @F-Man 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allen Schantz I've often considered your question, whether my love for this kind of music is actually the voice of God calling out to me in a way that I can understand and recognize. I have a very strong Catholic background - I attended Catholic schools all the way up to university, I know more than most about how Christianity came to be, the social and theological underpinnings of it, etc. Because of that, I think it allows me to appreciate this music more due to my familiarity with why anyone would write it in the first place - it's an absolutely glorious institution and philosophy. What fails to convince me, though, is the entire notion that nothing about the essence of any religion (God's will) can be explained through any means known to human minds. Yes, science has helped to explain many previously unknown topics, and some may even argue that science and related disciplines were actually planted here by God so that we humans could come closer to reaching our fullest potential via exercising our free will, but, that logic fails me, because there's simply no evidence for it (if we, for argument's sake, regard all scripture and testimony as illegitimate). What Christianity does teach me, though, is that all humans are inherently equal in right and dignity, that redemption through sincere word and act is deserved by all, and that the maxim of "Deus caritas est" is not a definition - rather, it's an ideal: that through charity, through love for ourselves and for each other, we can, perhaps, cling to the hope that our world can always persevere and become improved.

    • @allenschantz9965
      @allenschantz9965 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ferrariman 601, “shameless atheist,” thank you for your thoughtful answer to my question. Interesting that you think your “love for this kind of music” may “actually” be “the voice of God calling out in a way that you can understand and recognize.” Your background and story is very intriguing. In my case, Bach’s music (especially Mass in B Minor) has reached me in a way that nothing else could. “The Hound of Heaven” [see Francis Thompsons’s poem] has pursued me through a labyrinth of music, physics, mathematics, languages, philosophy, art, poetry, and paranomasia (just a fancy word for telling puns). [Psychiatrist to another psychiatrist: “I’ll take the high road; you take the psychopath!] “The Hound of Heaven” has captured my heart. Although I have found compelling logical arguments for Christianity, my relationship with Christ and with loving, caring Christians in all walks of life is much more than logical argument (although not antithetical to it-see Lee Strobel, “The Case for Christ”). It is a personal relationship with someone who loved me (“Credo…in Jesum Christum”), gave his life for me (“crucifixus etiam pro nobis”), rose again (“et resurrexit tertia die”), and gives me the promise of life after death (“et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum”) corroborated by thoughtful, loving Christians. In your words, “Deus caritas est.” I’d love to hear more of your story and especially what has brought you to the conclusion that “all scripture and testimony is illegitimate.” Looking forward to continued dialogue! -“Shameless Christian” P. S. This is my revised answer, since I mistakenly posted the first draft and just found out that I could edit my response.
