Hillside Oral History: Interview with Portia Johnson
The Hillside neighborhood is the heart of Duluth in more than just geography. Home to decades of grassroots organizing, racial justice, and community care, the Hillside holds a rich history that all can learn from and celebrate. These interviews represent a sample of that history, with Hillsiders who have made remarkable contributions to the neighborhood over the last 50+ years. These oral histories aim to uplift Hillside strengths, and create an invaluable record of one of the region’s oldest, most diverse neighborhoods.

I don't know a lot about Duluth, as I'm a resident of Lansing. But I do know that large roads such as this one are deasly trying to cross. This is even more of an issue when there is no elevated crosswalks of even crosswalks in general. As long as the issue has a reasonable solution then I would fully support something like this. But take my opinion with a grain of sand, because I don't live in Duluth.
I ride the bus and I’m too afraid to take buses in this route because I need to cross this avenue.
We hear this sentiment a lot from Hillsiders. Hopefully it's something that can change.
Feels like we're at a point where we can right some wrongs of historic redlining and ongoing disinvestment, especially if the voices of the Hillside neighbors are centered in the process. This is an exciting opportunity and seems like there is a really broad coalition of engaged partners.

Whelp, if it was a proper vaccine then there wouldn't be this push to get jabbed and boosted so often. Why is that? Doesn't work very well apparently. I know a lot of people who are 'vaxxed' and still test + for covid. Things just aren't adding up.
