Jeremy Boulton: The Madison Monument
มุมมอง 1773 ปีที่แล้ว
Jeremy Boulton, Professor of Urban History at Newcastle University spoke to us at our August 2020 meeting. Visitors to St Nicholas Cathedral have long been delighted by the Madison memorial - the delightful set of 17th century carved figures depicting three generations of the same family depicted in a long and prayerful line. Here you can learn more about who they were and how the memorial came...

When you get your history degree from the cleaning lady you get to make statements like this gentleman. Dacia included big parts from many neighboring countries that border modern day Romania. And it was not a landlocked country resumed to modern day Transylvania, which is a part of Romania. Not to start a whole debate where Greek or Roman historians left in their writings exact details regarding the lands that the Dacian inhabited.

My Ancestor only received 4 wooded acres & 1 common in 1657/8. Poor man never saw his family in Scotland again 😔 The first appearance of Alexander in New England occurs on 01 Mar 1657/8 when he is granted 4 acres of woods and 1 acre of common in Charlestown, Massachusetts. I got evidence that geordie merchants of Newcastle upon Tyne who had started colonys in America were part of the reason for the war of independence . This letter i have from the merchants and people of Newcastle upon Tyne to his majesty king George 3 apologising to the king for the trouble there fellow towns men were causing for him in the americas for refusal to pay the king colonial taxes . I found this letter on the louisiana university website . Now back then newcastle upon Tyne was a very very rich city . Historians say it was the second city of England ,the northern capital and with its great city walls and gates was though of as one of the greatest fortified citys in all of Europe inly being bettered by the walls of constantinople and Jerusalem. with a monopoly on the coal trade and our famous ship building in the river Tyne . Newcastle was an absolute powerhouse 😢😢 but that changed funny enough in the 1800s when the destruction of our city and it magnificent architectural buildings our city walls and towers and gates were all but ripped down , the government dystroyed our ship yards by not giving the city ship contracts and the coal trade stopped .Newcastle upon Tyne NOW is one of the most deprived places in all of england . I believe king George was well pissed of he lost the americas and took it out the only way be could by seizing all the colonial geordie lands and propertys in newcastle and setting about the destruction of the great northern capital . I believe one company the king siezed was the world famous newcastle brown ale company as i also found photos of a train in America that was stocked up with cases of newcastle brown and now its not ow ed by a geordie and its not even madw in newcastle any more .

Lol. 10.42 she mentions the difficulty of the names. But i didnt realize a possible brother he was with, David. I only wish my parents were still alive to find out all this incredible knowledge of our past. Also mentioned a Scot in Woodbridge, NJ & thats where Im from. I bet that was my gg. I thank you

My ancestor Robert Dunbar was among the Scot prisoners of war who were taken to New England, in the American colony of New England as a Saugus Iron Works mine worker. He later bought his freedom and did well in society there in New England. I believe these men were technically prisoner of war slaves but polite company calls the situation, indentured. The men had no freedom unless they paid their price.

I'm a descendant of William Furbish, mentioned in the video! He survived Dunbar, the March, being imprisoned in the church, and the ship's crossing to America, then 7-8 years of involuntary servitude in Maine. After release he married and became a founding member of Kittery, Maine. They survived a vicious attack by the natives that few in the village survived. What this family went through, and prospered anyways is mind blowing.

My 8th G. grandfather, Alestar MacMallin, was sent to the Saugus Iron Works-aboard the ship Unity with 2 friends-Alexander and Archibald whose last names I do not know. Alestar had a son he named Alexander and a grandson Archibald. If the English thought they'd done away with the MacMallins they were very much wrong. Alestar's descendants now number in the 10s of thousands and played a large part in the history of this great nation.
