    We especially like the texture of our SD. It’s not as dry or chewy as commercial but holds up well with sandwiches. Recently I tried a hybrid experiment and included about 1/2 C of SD starter with the liquids but also included some yeast - about a scant tsp (+/- half of usual amt). Proceeded like making regular yeasted bread. Surprise! Texture superior to “regular” yeast bread…. But the Time was like normal yeast bread. Taste also improved. We likey! We still make regular SD bread but our hybrid is our go-to when we need a loaf in a couple hours.

    • @TheHandmadeHomestead
      @TheHandmadeHomestead 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's probably the extra moisture the sourdough starter provides and the reduced rise from the lowed amount of yeast that's improving your texture - either way - Big homesteader-hug for thinking outside the bread box and trying a new idea. I do add sourdough starter to yeast bread as part of the hydration too sometimes for enhanced (though limited) improved digestibility. The tangy flavor of strong starter makes me cringe tho. so I feed my starter well and often and use a lightly closed lid to increase the lactic acid (yogurt flavors) as much as possible. lol

    Those peppers are beautiful, even the ones I wouldn't dare eat because I don't like spicy food. A few years ago, I first saw Shishito peppers in a supermarket so I bought a small bag and made pepper steak. It was a mild batch I think because I tolerated them well. I'm guessing that's what Notapeños are like?

    • @TheHandmadeHomestead
      @TheHandmadeHomestead 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Shishito peppers are mostly mild - every once in a while you'll get a spicy one. We love them and grow them too. The Nadapenos have zero heat -- and Habanadas (zero heat Habanadas) are also a great pepper to get the flavor without the heat.

    Love your rugs! What a beautiful way to use scraps of fabric! I have always thought it would be fun to learn to weave.....if only I could figure out a place for a loom! 🤔

    • @TheHandmadeHomestead
      @TheHandmadeHomestead หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are wonderful table top looms on the market, and they hold their resale value well so when you are ready to move up to a larger loom or a floor loom you can resell your table top one without taking a bit hit. Look at rigid heddle looms and see if that's not a good place for you to start.

    Don’t buy Braggs anymore. It was sold to Katy Perry and she uses bill gates apeal apples. Now toxic. It used to be the best but not anymore. Find local ACV.

    Can you use another type of dough, I can’t do anything with yeast in it which phyllo dough has. Thanks!

      FILO dough is yeast free - flour, water, salt. -- you can make it with any dough you want. It will taste different and have a different texture -- but as long as you like it nothing else matters. Make it your own my friend.

    When i let my dough rise in machine for 3-4 hours or till whenever like u mention, it gets a hard sort of dried top on it. How do i fix that? I tried pinching off but it’s quite a bit to lose.

    This was lovely. You do so much! The rain out your windows was beautiful! My problem is I only like asparagus, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli and can't grow/scared to grow the. & do grow sugar snaps, wax beans, lettuce, onions, carrot, potatoes. I just did potatoes in bucket & it worked. The carrot tops are great but no orange. I have raised beds & pots on my small yard so I do what I can. My asthma keeps me limited on energy but I'm still learning. Thanks for sharing.

      Sounds like you are already doing a GREAT job! ---- And Carrots -- my favorite part are the green tops. I dry them and use them in place of parsley to garnish and flavor food, and I use them in pesto too. It's probably one of my favorite things in the kitchen! -- and I think carrot roots are fickle little brats. Sometimes they're ok, sometimes they don't give me much for roots either. lol You're in good company my friend!

    Saying I'm too old, for this or that, will take life out of your years and years off your life. If one wants to homestead, do it to the best of his/her ability, regardless of how old s/he is.

    I would love to homestead. I need 1. Money 2. Land 3. House on land I can't do it without those 3 things.

      Find a shared garden lot in the city. Start there

      You can. All you need is interest, motivation, and to get started. If you have a closet and a grow light you can start, a window sill, a porch or doorstep -- you can get started. Think of homesteading as a way of thinking, and see what you can be self sufficient in right now in your life.

    Grow where you are planted! We are both 69, live in a small town on 1/3 acre and have 4 gardens, laying hens, a greenhouse, apple trees, grape vines, raspberry bushes, elderberries, rhubarb, strawberries, and 3 beehives for honey and wax. I can every year, also dehydrate. We are urban homesteaders.
