Welcome to my painting channel!
I'm Kate from Hong Kong. I have been painting freehand Chinese watercolor for more than 20 years and had held exhibitions. I started this channel to share my skills and knowledge in Chinese painting which seems to be the best kept secret unknown to the outside world. With western education and interests in all kinds of arts and crafts, I have started to develop my own style and use more more materials to create art work.
Enjoy watching and happy painting!

Painting tutorial | Panda & bamboos | Chinese painting tutorial in English
Painting giant pandas and bamboos using traditional Chinese painting method and Chinese ink is the most appropriate. Free hand Chinese painting is about using simple strokes to express the subject, just like abstract painting but not too abstract.
I have used a large brush, a small brush, Chinese ink and half-ripe rice paper to paint this.
Happy painting!

The use of orange color in Chinese painting
มุมมอง 9497 หลายเดือนก่อน
The traditional orange Chinese watercolor is derived from Cinnabar. The bright mineral color is stable and long lasting, making it a great color to ue for Chinese painting. However, I seldom use single color in my brush strokes. I always mix color. Orange color is probably the most used color in my core color. It can be mixed with ink to get brown color, with yellow and red to get different sha...

Beautifully done. Appreciate your I struction
Hello Kate ;) Thank you for this recent video teaching us pandas. I am taking a class from Louise Fletcher in the UK and am circling back to modeling after your techniques as my focus for awhile. I haven't tried rice paper yet..., still practicing on watercolor paper and have a question if there is a final protective coating I can use on ink and watercolor? Or does it go behind glass generally? Thank you for all the amazing teaching you give! Jennifer
@@HennyCub Thanks for your kind words. There is no protective coating. You can still use Chinese ink on regular watercolor paper but the effect is different. Perhaps that’s something I could try to demonstrate in some videos later.
Can you show us how to mount paintings? I would love that. Thank you for your videos. ❤
beautiful.. thank you.
Sweet and simple. Lovely❤

Is it better to use half ripe or ripe?
@@tonyaturner2762 Depending on the style and effects you want. I use half ripe because you will see the gradient of strokes.
@KateWuArt ok thank you. I wanted to use watercolor paint on rice paper but I have traditional and kuretake plus what I was told Chinese watercolor paint
Beautiful!
Thank you, Kate!
I was loving it, your skills painting the leaves, and then the branches. Just beautiful. Then you sprinkled the paint, as EVERYBODY ELSE, so I did not finished the video. and wrote this comment. THE END

I love your tutorials, I paint with Chinese ink, paper and brushes. I enjoy the Chinese painting and calligraphy very much.❤ Meihua from Austria
Thank you so much for sharing these valuable lessons in Chinese painting.😊 You mentioned that your rendering of the Peony in this video is a more modern, western style. I'm really interested in traditional Chinese methods/style. Would you do a video using traditional Chinese methods? I want to learn so I can use it in my art too. 😊🙏
I’m excited to try your style painting a buffalo. Do you offer a class? Freehand & few brush strokes sounds like what I want to practice🌸
@@jenniferwiseley-jungemann1732 Thanks for the interest. I have to figure out how to set up a zoom class =) If you have the brushes, ink ad material, you may paint along. Less is more. These few strokes are not that easy but it’s a good start if you like the painting style.
Thanks for the encouragement. 🌻 Of all the artists I have looked into following, my heart jumps seeing this “minimalist” look so I want to learn your difficult sumi brush strokes & have started to try imitating your style. I did get some brushes like yours and some black Chinese type ink. If you have a link to get some color pigments, I would prefer to try those like you use. Cheers🎉
Thank you so much for your videos! This is such a beautiful peony painting!💕
I think this is one of the best xiěyì peony paintings I’ve ever seen. Many artists paint very impressive and almost realistic looking peonies but your style is still loosened up and very spontaneous and I think that you follow the calligraphic concept more than some other artists. Thanks for sharing! BTW, do you use a white cloud (白云) brush? At least it looks like one.
@@ZengHuaXiansheng Thanks for your kind words. I am not using a white cloud brush. It’s just a mixed hair brush from a local Chinese art shop.
